I'm looking to find some places in southern California, preferably where I can do some fishing. But, I don't want to camp in an actual campground. Any suggestions.?
Answer
Well in the imediate so cal region you dont have too many options, the only places you can open or dispersed camp near water with fish in it is deep creek and bear creek up near big bear and those will be a 5 mile + hike in-n-out camp out. All other area's that are fishable restrict camping to established camp grounds. If you want to avoid crowds and noisey campers go mid week, you may have to as it is because all the campgrounds at or near fishable waters around LA, SD, OC, and Inland Empire are reserve only and get booked up 6 months in advance specially on the weekends. If your willing to drive out a bit to the northern border of southern california the Kern river has some very nice dispersd camping along that river, going further north near Bishop Ca the options are even better. Also going east to the Colorado river(way too hot for me) there is a lot of dispersed camping.
Good Luck!

I want to take my wife and dog camping in southern California. We will be using a tent to stay in and I have a Jeep Wrangler. What are some nice places we could go camping for the weekend?
Answer
Any of the national forests allow dogs at their campgrounds the choices are endless. I would pick one with access to water like a stream or something, My dogs love it I can't keep them out of it. 4wd will increase your choices over some other folks I like the back country roads too. Some spots to consider are along highway 33 in Ojai mountains it winds thru Los Padres National Forest northbound to the California Central Valley. This area is called Rose Valley & totally worth a stop. Campgrounds located along Sespe Creek (MIDDLE LION) and at Rose Valley Falls (ROSE VALLEY)
