where can you go wild camping in surrey?

Q. i was wonderring if you can camp on box hill mainly?

Answer
Camping outside of recognised campsites is illegal in England but is tolerated on some of the long distance walks in wild counry far from towns where walkers may stay for only one night in a tent in each location as they walk the trails.
Box Hill and Leith Hill are popular sites to visit with easy access and they do not come under the category of 'wild and remote country'.
Neither does anywhere else in Surrey or any of the Home Counties or anywhere in the south east of England.
The fines for illegal camping can be high and since both Box Hill and Leith Hill are under the juristiction and care of the National Trust you will almost certainly get a court appearance or a police warning which goes on your record if you are caught illegally camping on any of their properties where no permission is granted for camping.
You will notice that camping is not included in 'other activities' or in the main menu on the National Trust site.
http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-chl/w-countryside_environment/w-activities/w-activities-other.htm . . . . . . ..
The nearest campsite to Box Hill is at Horsley Lake just over 6 miles away.
See down here
http://www.theleisureguide.co.uk/detail/1075/national-trust-box-hill.html . . . . ..
If you are inexperienced at camping you are probably headed for trouble if you camp wild almost anywhere in south east England, where you are never far from a town or a village.
The Kent and Essex marshes, a few areas of the North and South Downs, and parts of Suffolk and Norfolk have more isolated areas where it is possible to hide in the wilderness for a while, but it isn't legal to do so.
Some people do so however, but it is entirely at your own risk if you do it.
If you try it on Box Hill you will almost certainly end up in trouble for it. Be very careful anywhere you try wild camping , and don't even think about it in areas that are popular places to visit as Box Hill is.
Here is one for the Medway...same advice. Be very careful if you do it.

Camping for under 18's in Northampton or near northampton? Uk.?

Lauren' :)

Me and my boyfriend just wanna get away for abit so we thought camping was a good idea? :)
Also we would prefer it was near like a restaurant and entertainment or something?
Need a answer ASAP, any help would be amazing :D
thankyoooooou x

Answer
Hi, best wishes to the lovely Nene and proper Northampton boots. Bad news though....it would be very difficult to find a campsite anywhere in UK or even in most of Europe or the USA that will accept bookings from people under 18 years old. It's a shame because just outside of Northampton is Billing Aquadrome which is a great place to stay in chalets caravans or tents.
http://www.billingaquadrome.com/ . . . . . .
Three of us on here, and only one miserable rotten same answer
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjBSZFUaNLQ1m1v819hlaJ4hBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100712075500AA8rYfs&show=7#profile-info-IZcMGh0Oaa . . . . .
Sad but that's just how it is. Even with good Blindell Northampton shoes on they won't let you stay if you're both under 18 ...now how on Earth would that name come up?
You can however camp in the grounds of Youth Hostels if you join the YHA.....link on the bottom of here after all the bad news.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlBDBGn3_d4wAcLFeA8lm14hBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100630153704AAIu2kT&show=7#profile-info-t0e3U4BEaa . . . . .link ok
So it's not the amazing help you really wanted but what is amazing is the number of people who camp out wild all over UK perfectly illegally.
It's at your own risk and it doesn't have the facilities of a camp site but for a night or two away if you have a tent and sleeping bags it can be good fun if you don't get caught doing it....wild camping, that is.
Illegal camping.
Here's all about it and it might not suit what you want but it's there as an option anyway if you are very careful.
Just pretend it says Northampton...it's exactly the same as in Kent, Essex, Warwickshire, Bedfordshire, the wilds of Yorkshire or my own county of Hertfordshire after my Dad moved really deep south from sunny Northampton (??? Funny...thought the Nene and all those lakes came from rain or something. Oh right...it rains...coooh, fancy that!) to the high hills of Hertfordshire before I was born.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100702185125AAMBQ0j . . . . . .ok
Here's another one for the Medway which is even wetter than Northampton...it's near the east Kent marshes
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkqrR5ZzKXytPodN2_7HGnkhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100712025634AAfZphp&show=7#profile-info-sV9u4Qb6aa . . . . . .ok
Have fun anyway...one day the world will be yours ...18 at last, hehe.......

Great places to go overnight camping this weekend near Los Angeles...?

msmit106

My husband and I moved to Los Angeles this past summer and really want to go camping this weekend. We aren't too familiar with the State Parks and campgrounds and we would love to know where there are some really great, pretty close parks, within 1-2 hours (without traffic), from the city. We want a place that we can stay overnight and tent camp but has decent trails around to hike on as well. Thanks!

Answer
Malibu creek state park is the place, the neat hike to take is to the tarzan falls and then to mash tv series site. bring a fishing pole a long as several spots along the way are fishable. here's the link

Camping near Vasquez Rocks Los Angeles area?

Hello,
My husband and I (and our 4 year old son) are looking for a place near Vasquez Rocks (Aqua Dolce) to tent camp for one night in September. I just need a campground that is fairly quiet and safe that allows tent camping. Any ideas? I've been online all day and can't figure out where to go.

Looking for an extreme weather tent that is still good for summer camping?

J-Bird

Hello! We are looking for a good tent for family camping. From the Midwest, so the weather can be pretty unpredictable. Summer camping trips can often go from 100 degrees+ to tornadic weather in a matter of minutes.

However, most extreme weather tents have poor ventilation and are practically stifling in hot weather. We had a North Face one (not sure the model) but ended up returning it after many sweaty, sleepless nights.

I currently have my eye on the REI Base Camp 6 tent and the Cabela's Alaskan Guide Model and XWT model tents (probably the 8 person versions)

Any experience with these or other extreme weather tents for summer camping?
We do car camping, so no, weight is not a consideration.

Also, I realize we should not be camping in tornadic weather. But we have weathered quite a few severe summer thunderstorms, and Coleman tents often do not stand up to the challenge.

Answer
Ok, I'll stick my opinion here too, I have the Big Agnes Flying Diamond 6 Tent.

http://www.rei.com/product/779625

This puppy is not light by any means a whopping 20lbs and we got it on sale a while back so the sticker price was not to bad for us. It holds nicely in heavy winds and we camp a lot in Joshua tree with it. Taking the fly off it breathes well enough for us and I also use a battery powered fan at night to keep cool in it but haven't camped in scorcher weather, Joshua tree is just too dang hot in the summer.

We also have a Coleman tent, had it for years and use that for general camping for long stays. We like to use cots and to be able to stand up in the tent keeps us dry and breathes very well has the built in tarp and we set out tables and stuff for showing info to through hikers along the PCT we have been assisting in resupply for through hikers for many years. The Coleman has been a very reilable tent for us.

Cheap camping equipment, where can I find some?

LC

I'd like to take my family of six camping this summer but we have no equipment whatsoever, does anyone know where I could find some reasonably priced, even used camping equipment online or in the detroit metro area?

Answer
I have to agree with all the "yard sale" suggestions, you can get some great buys at them.

If you do decide to purchase a used tent, insist that it be set up before paying for it! Be certain that all of the poles, stakes, and rain fly are there. Check it over very carefully for rips, tears and any defective zippers.

If you go with a new tent, please stay away from "store brands" it at all possible. Most are not bad for the occasional camper but, if you plan on camping quite often, buy a well know brand even if you have to buy a discontinued model. (Older models mean markdowns which mean bargin for the shopper!)

I would never consider buying a used sleeping bag! Store brand sleeping bags start around the $15 mark and are adequate for summer camping on a budget.

Used propane stoves can be found at yard sales, at times. Have the owner show you how it works and that it does indeed work properly. To save a few $$, you could consider cooking over a campfire or hot coals. It is a romantic and rustic notion but it is dirty, time consuming and frustrating at times. Better to stick with a stove for your first camping trip with the family so that all goes smoothly and they will want to do it again!

Coolers can also be located at yard sales, just check to be certain the drain plug is not missing or broken, along with handles and hinges.

Cookware can be simply your older pots and pans from how. Same goes with flashlights for night time trips to the bathhouse.

If you are not positive your family will enjoy camping, have you considered renting some of the gear instead of purchasing? There are two REI stores in the Detroit area that rent tents, stoves, sleeping bags and pads. No idea of the cost but may be something you would want to consider and check into.

camping site for 16 year olds in essex?

bex123x

me and a few friends want to go camping for a couple of nights, but we can't find a camp site that will take 16 year olds they all say you have to be 18, does anyone know anywhere that will let us? thankyouu :)

Answer
You have discvovered the reality of being 16 and trying to get a booking in a camp site.
No camp sites in Britain will take bookings for people under 18. If a group of over 18's applies even then it's at the disgression of the site manager whether he accepts a booking or not.
Sorry...that's .just how it is. At 16 you've got child protection stuff and all sorts that the camp managers will be responsible for and they get enough problems from everything else on the sites already.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100712075500AA8rYfs . . . . . .
After the bad news there is a ray of hope if you want to go that way......read right on, but not all the places have facilities for camping so the areas you can get to are quite limited.

Please suggest me a place(s) to Wild Camp!?

Maribel

First of all im fully aware that wild camping is illegal but me and my mates are up to some adventure soo yh. please suggest me some places that is easy to access, near london and safe enough for us to be noisy at night and please if possible explain to me how to get to the forest where we can actually set the camp and everything =]

Thanks in advance

Answer
Haha Mountain Man...that's a great deal. Both ways....great deal, lots of it.

Are you in a car or by public transport?
Where are you? North London? South? West? East? I'll suggest places your side of London.
Bit short of people on here. Most are the other side of the pond...the big Atlantic.
To get driving directions anywhere you can use Google Maps.
It opens on USA, scroll over to UK, zoom up to required scale , see "Get directions" at top left of the screen
Put home and destination in and in a few seconds it lists all the turns, junctions, distances, average driving time, all the way there. Print it for the journey.
http://maps.google.com/ . . . .
Alternative idea for a party with noise and as quick as driving or buses into deepest Essex is the train to Brighton.
What? Brighton beach gets quite a few all-nighters.....I've slept a few under Brighton pier.
Tents on the beach too. Fires...not too big, but they get fires going. A few cans, bottle of vodka, and the party's on the way.
Sometimes the biggest really basic difference between night and day on Brighton beach is that it gets dark at night. Not for long at this time of year though...about 6 hours. Sometimes people go home when the Sun comes up. Some zonk out where they are or crawl into a tent or a beach shelter to go bye-byes... or,err.....not go bye-byes.
Cheap fare from London. An hour on the train. Ten minute walk to the beach or live a bit of Bohemia in the Lanes first. Or the clubs. Hot, is Brighton.
Student country...Brighton is buzzing with it....anything. *-* . . anything o0_00

Where are some good camping places in Oregon?

kmfb.kmfb

Not too far from Portland, like 2 hours away at the most.

Just a mellow place to pitch a tent with some friends for the weekend.

Possibly with a river.

And no cost!

Thank you!!

Answer
I liked going camping in the upper Clackamas River region outside of Estacada. There is many, many places to camp. Some are free, others are not. Here is a link to a list of all the campgrounds up there. It tells you the name and whether it is a free campground or one you have to pay. All of them are less than two hours from Portland. Most are within about an hour. Have fun and be safe.

Camp counseling places?

Okay, I am twelve, but will be thirteen in summer, and during the summer I want to counsel at a little kids camp somewhere in Texas. Does anyone know of anygood places or websites?

Answer
Try Summercamps.com website. You can browse camps by state or by the type of camp they are. There is also a section to search for summer camp jobs. I was a counselor when I was 14 or 15 and really enjoyed it.

I hope this helps you!!

what is a good camping place in austin?

Kelsey

what is a nice place that isn't too crowded and has primitive camping? preferably somewhere to swim too.

Answer
Absolutely, Lake Travis is a wonderful place for camping. Since it's a favorite among the locals, you can be sure to find camping areas with amenities. Or, you may rough it as well and camp "old style" if you prefer. The water sports and leisure activities are fun of course. So if you do not bring your own equipment there are rental places and shops located nearby as well.

Enjoy Texas!

Places to camp on the beach in Oregon?

Dean

Me and friends want to go camping on the beach, not at a park near the beach or in dunes but on the beach. So what are some good places to go in Oregon?

Answer
Camping is allowed on beaches provided:
* It is not adjacent to a state park
* It is not within any city limits
* It is in the Oregon Recreational Area right-of-wayâfrom the Pacific Ocean to 16 feet above the low tide line.
* The beach is not closed to camping for environmental protection reasons, most commonly Snowy Plover nesting areas
* Not allowed in Clatsop and Tillamook counties (though there are pending legal challenges)

This article http://www.beachconnection.net/oregon_coast/071807Seaside_oregon.php describes some locations near Seaside.

The Oregon Coast Trail group on Yahoo Groups provides detailed information on the route along with many suggestions for where there are good places to camp. A recent posting describes several new "no camping" signs (which they discretely ignored).

Do you know anyone who buys too much junk?

USAman

Ex: I have an aunt who has been going to yard sales and the Goodwill store for junk for the past 20 years. She has a 3 car garage, basement, attic, 4 bedrooms, 3 out buildings, 2 rental units, 3 zipper tents (1 tent which contains a full dining room set complete with a china cabinet), 27 plastic garbage barrels which are all full to the top with various junk.

Do you know anyone who has a little "issue" like this?
When I say a room's full, I mean full to the ceiling where the ceiling fan can't turn because there's too much junk in the way.

Answer
I was going to say ME..till I read your details. She needs counseling and someone to help her stop. It really is a mental thing. I don't mean she's crazy...she's just obsessive. I've seen people like this on tv. They're always glad when they get somebody to help them. I know about the shopping thing..the yard sales and thrift stores etc. You want to reward yourself and you feel like you're getting such a great bargain. I do the same about things on Clearance. But I live in a camper..so there's no chance of my doing anything like your aunt. But with what I do have..that I need to get rid of...it's really hard to let go of it. And as sure as I do..it's something we need. I definitely can't throw anything in the trash. OH well..I guess that's what closets are for . Hope she gets some help..for her sake.(as well as her family') Good Luck with that!

How can I do a wedding for under 7,000?

teckler2

I live in PA near Penn state, and I have a guest list of 150. My wonderful finacee has a huge Italian family and we cannot cut the guest list down. My parents are no longer around and we are paying for the wedding ourselves. Does anyone have any tips on where to hold the wedding/reception to meet our budget? Help!!

Answer
here are my tips that i have passed on to many buget concious brides... hope you can use some of them.

first off- shop after holiday clearance sales at craft stores, michaels and ac moore, and places like walmart, target and kmart. i got things on christmas clearance for 75-95% off- votive candles in glass holders for $.40 each!

i can set you up with a great lady who is making my invites. she does package deals (any size you will need) and a la carte - you will save tons with her. i'm getting 75 invites, evelopes, thank you scrolls, rsvp postcards, folded thank you cards and evelopes and address labels for under $90

rings- shop jc pennys when they have sales, look for coupons...
or ebay and craigslist. really don't be afraid of ebay. shop sellers with 99 or 100% feedback only. i'm getting my ring for under $25 (stainless band that matchs my engagement ring) and his for under $50 (tungsten).

transportation- use a relatives nice auto or use your own. you DON'T nee a limo, you can even rent a big suv for the day for near nothing from most rental co's (budget hertz alamo) or call around to classic car clubs and see if you can rent a classic car for an hr or two... might be really cheap to do that

dress- shop consignment shops. my dress cost $150 and is awesome. look on craigslist and ebay too.

bm dresses- these have dresses under $100
http://www.bridalsassique.com/index.asp?...
http://www.bridesonlinestore.com/
you can also try looking at prom dresses and homecoming dresses in macys and jcpenneys. most of them look like bm dresses anymore, it will increase your selection by looking for those 3 types instead of just bm dresses

guys clothing- they don't need to tux it up. they can wear white shirts and tan slacks. or white shirts and dark slacks and a tie... make sure they are all bought at the same time so they match.

flowers- you can shop local flower stores or grocery store floral dpts (make your own if you like) bring pics of what you want to guide your florist. shop rite has a full service flower dpt and they offer wedding planning help too. or you can go the silk route. afloral.com has great flowers. that's who i went to for mine

centerpieces- i like the tall vases with topiary style arrangements on them. i love gerberas so i think using them is a great way to punch up color and keep your budget down
you can also get different vases (walmart super cheap) and have different looks on each table.

ceremony location- i'm all for outdoor weddings. i think being surrounded by nature is just beautiful and makes for awesome pictures. plus most are free or really cheap.
i'm getting married in a park and it only cost $5 for the application fee. no charge to bring in chairs tents etc...

reception locations- you can have it at a vfw, moose/elk lodge or fire house banquet hall. they are nicer now that ever... they realize how much revenue they generate so many/most have been updated in the last few years.
we are using the banquet hall of the fire house where we are memebers. it only cost us $275 to rent. $500 for non members. (they do open bar. cash bar. cater. or let you diy the food)

cake- look at bjs and costco, even walmart does wedding cakes now. don't forget grocery stores. most do wedding cakes and are rather tasty cakes. you might not get all the flavor choices of a bakery but most ppl go with white or chocolate anyway.
we are getting our cake from shop rite ($1.75 a serving compared to $3.50 someone else quoted me) i love s/r cakes and have had many a b-day cake from them when i was younger.

favors- you really don't need them if you are trying to save money. but... you can do organza bags filled with candies. shop ebay for the best prices, seller ideabus, has the best prices and selection
or try dipping the ends of pretzle rods in white, dark or milk chocolate. then roll the ends (or sprinkle) with jimmies, colored sugar crystals, crushed nuts, mini marshmallows... or what ever else floats your fancy. put them in celophane bags and tie off with a ribbon to match your colors. super easy and people love things they can snack on on the way home from the reception.
stick to edible, anything else are 99% dust collectors or trash can fillers

photographer- look on craigslist for your area, under services, type in photography and see the results. i found a great gal for mine $300 for 6 hrs. some places charge wayyyy more but you should be able to find a good one for under 1k
i also found someone who wants to build her portfolio so she's shooting the whole day for free. if we like any prints we can order a la carte for super cheap.

you might be able to find a dj service on craigslist too. or just call around for a good rate from someone with referrals

our wedding for about 100 ppl will run us about 2-2500k.

most important thing about a wedding, budget- STICK TO IT

oh join your local yahoo group freecycle and post what you are looking for. i got lots of wedding things for free. (esp after june!)

post on craigslist for your area too, and search for wedding things too. many ppl have left overs they want to unload after their weddings and sell at below lowest cost!

oh ck out this site too

Best sightseeing places in the Poconos, PA?

Vanilla Sk

I would love to see a great mountain view in a nice cozy cabin or at least a nice hotel. I would of went to Aspen, Colorado but unfortunately trip can't go as planned. I need advice on a place to stay and have fun around the area.

Answer
Great Wolf Lodge offers an indoor water park and super friendly family atmosphere. It is close to the Tannersville Outlets so you could include some shopping.

Mountain Laurel Resort & Spa is more grown up atmosphere.

Lots of places offer cabins for rent near Big Boulder and Jack Frost. Check Pocono Real Estate website for houses.

Looking for cheap fun in the area then go over to Hickory Run State Park (they offer camp sites seasonally). There is stuff to see there all year round. Easy hikes to see waterfall and check out Boulder Field.

Prettiest places to live in the US?

Cody B

Hello,
I would like to know if anyone can suggest a few towns/cities that are mountainous, somewhat isolated, and are somewhat low-key in the US. I am looking to live somewhere with great views, cool weather, close (10-40 miles) to a big (60k+ population) city. Sort of a "hidden gem." Any suggestions and experience will be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Answer
Having lived in Wyoming, I can suggest a few places that fit all but the last of your criteria (close to mid-sized town). Wilson, Wyoming, is just west of Jackson and is a very cool, low-key place and yet close to all the amenities of Jackson. Cody, Wyoming, is also very nice. It is reasonably close to Billings, Montana, and is much more low-key than Jackson Hole with scenery and recreation activities that almost match Jackson. Sheridan, Wyoming, is also a very nice small western town with nice mountains. In Utah, Park City would be an incredible place to live, just 20 minutes from Salt Lake City and three huge wonderful ski resorts. In Colorado, I would look at small towns like Telluride, sort of close to Denver, and maybe Loveland. Driggs, Idaho, is a relatively undiscovered gem close to Grand Targhee ski resort and many places to camp, fish and hike. I lived in Jackson Hole for five years and loved it but can't describe it as low-key.

Camping places similar to Second Beach?

Jennifer H

Hello,

My group of friends have been going to Second Beach for 3 years every summer and we are trying to find a new location that is very similar to it in a sense that it is primitive camping. Second beach was a secluded camping area where the camp site was hidden from view from the beach yet about 20 feet away from it. It had no bathrooms, running water, or electricity. We also had to hike about 1 mile to get to the campsite/beach.

Pls let me know if you have any suggestions of where to camp that is primitive (no state parks pls bc we hate the rules/regulations that they impose)

Answer
It helps if you explain which state your "Second Beach" occupies. I will guess that you are talking about Washington State. I suggest that you look over dispersed camping in National Forest or, more specifically, designated Wilderness Areas. National Forests usually do not require the dispersed camping permits of National Parks.

Where to go for Grad Camping Trip on Vancouver Island, BC?

Christina

im planning a grad camping trip for my high school grad class on Vancouver Island, BC... possibly around Parksville, Tofino, or the Gulf Islands....but I don't know where to go. We would want a place that isn't particularly family-oriented, because we're young and will inevitably make some noise. A place with like a group campsite would be best. we don't need any special amenities, just a campfire, some bathrooms, and showers. Any ideas? anything will help!!

Answer
You should look into the group camping areas in Strathcona Provincial Park.

Details available here - http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/strath/#GroupCamping

What type of things wil I need to bring on a camping trip?

Lindsey

I've never been camping before. What should I bring?

Answer
It all depends on what kind of campground you're going to and what kind of camping you plan to do..
If you're tent camping, then you'll want to bring a tent of course. My husband and I bought a 3 person Coleman a few years ago that has worked very well for us. Pretty much every tent we saw camping this weekend was a Coleman too, so, I'd assume they're decent. Our coleman came with a little mallet and the tent pins and the directions are sewn right into the bag.
If the campground has showers and bathrooms then you won't need to bring toilet paper, but, I always bring one roll anyways just in case. You'll also want to probably bring a towel and your basic toiletries.. Don't forget a flashlight! Or it will be one dark walk to the bathroom at 3 am..
As far as sleeping goes, there's so many different options, make sure to be prepared for it to be cold, but, also have another option if it's warm. I bring a sheet and a heavy sleeping bag. We have cots, but, you could use an air mattress or even just a foam pad like the kind sold in a camping section at Walmart.. Remember though, the dew will rise through the bottom of the tent, so don't just use a regular blanket underneath you or you'll be damp by morning. You'll probably just want something cheap to make sure you even like camping before buying something nicer like a padded cot. It'd be a good idea to bring a cheap pillow if the one you use at home is a nice one you don't want ruined.
Most of the time they sell wood at the campground, but, a lot of the time people alongside the road near the campground have it for sale, so no need to bring wood. If there's a grocery store nearby, I wouldn't bother bringing food either, just buy it once you get there. I would bring a cooler though, it's probably best to get a larger one and share it with friends or family that you're going with..
You'll obviously also need bug spray, and pack clothing for hot and cold weather and rain..
Other then that, a lot is personal preference.. I can't survive without my coffee, so I have one of those little blue enamel coffee pots sold in the camping section. They're about $10 and work pretty decent. I also have an enamel cup that cost about $3. You can put it right over the fire to boil water for hot cocoa mix. I also have extending forks for cooking hot dogs and marshmallows and a Lodge cast iron skillet for cooking up eggs and bacon in the morning.. Most of the time campgrounds have fire rings with a grid over them that you can set a pan on, otherwise you may have to pick one of those up or just skip on the cast iron pan..
That's really about all I can think of..

What makes these brands of camping gear worth the price?

Q. I've been to REI and other sporting good stores in search for camping gear in particularly tents. I see brands like Kelty, North Face, and Eureka and have seen their tents and to be honest, I don't see the reason for such a high price for these tents. Some are as much as $500 and I just don't get it. Some say it's the quality but I've been camping for over 20 years and my Coleman tent has held up in pretty harsh weather including heavy rain stroms and even snow and my coleman cost me about $100. I even have a Ozark Trail tent that has held up and never leaked. So what's the rationalation for such high prices? I don't get it. I have friends who say the quality is better yet they always seem to buying new tents every year and I've had my Coleman and Ozark for almost 8 years now and I camp about four to five times a year so they get used. s the quality that much better?

Answer
Agreed that the weight factor is a primary point. Any Coleman will weight more than any REI tent, in tent for tent comparison. Quality is also an Important issue, yes I can find a $40 dollar tent that weighs almost the same as a $400 tent but zippers fail, material fails, seams leak and who are you gonna call and complain to. REI stands by what they sell as does Coleman and they have a proven record in review products. Also look at what are professional guides using, here they want happy campers to return and use their services. If they were to put them in a tent that leaks, rips and falls down in a squall, that camper won't be back so again. You really do pay for what you get. If your buddies are buying new gear every year they are probably very hard on their gear and don't take good care of it. I have Coleman products and REI products that I have had for well over 10 years and all have served me well only because I take good care of them.

I agree with you that in some common tent designs like a simple dome or family cabin tent prices are ridiculously high for a name brand. Then you should consider dollar for dollar on it's guarantees and performance. In a family sized cabin tent used in car camping a Coleman tent will out perform anything out there at around $200 for their best tent. In a REI family tent double or even triple the price and you get less tent as well.

WaterPROOF tent for camping on ocean beach?

Bonghuffer

Does coleman or any more respected tent makers offer an already waterproofed tent to withstand multi-hour downpours?

I'm sure that Coleman is like the Huffy/Murray of camping gear, so any camping pros out there please let me know whom for to be looking.
Already got reservations, thanks. Had a great old tent heirloomed, lent it to a friend who lent it to a friend... Now we realize that we need a new one and dropping a half thousand on one that we plan on using twice a year is tough right now. The coleman that she got has a way-too-small fly and seems as waterproof as my tee shirts. She's returning it as soon as it dries out. How are Eureka brand tents? Worth buying, seam-sealing and fly-sealing?

Answer
There is no tent that is completely "waterproof". Coleman is a leader in family camping tent gear and their products are treated and seams factory sealed for weather protection so they have a "weather protection guarantee" but that is vague at best. Any tent for it to have good resistance to the weather must be set up correctly and all seams sealed and the material rated or coated with water resistance material. I find that higher end tents have better designs for weather protection and dome style tents the best overall design. Again Coleman meets that need. Here is an article to help you choose a quality tent,
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/family-base-camping-tent.html

Now you stated you are interested in beach camping. First if you don't have reservations now forget it all beach camping in the state of california is by reservation only 6 months in advance. Next beaches are naturally humid and tents are always damp inside and out in any weather situation specially at night . To help with that you need a tent with very good ventilation. Again Coleman tents meet that need.

@Eureka is no different than Coleman except for tent designs they use the same comparable materials and methods of construction or weather proofing, it's comparing apples to oranges

camping!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

kaylaz1978

we are going camping for the first time what is stuff we should bring i dont know what to take please help 2 alduts and 2 kids

Answer
Ok lets start with the basics of your trip. You probably dont want to spend a ton of money so lets get you a list that will keep you cumfortable and having fun without breaking the bank.

Number one start with a good tent. Eureka makes many tents that are very durable and not all that expensive. Other good brands include Kelty, Coleman and Cabelas. Just get a tent that fits your family cumfortably. Pick up a can of seam sealer too. Seal your tent before you use it to ensure you will be dry. You will also need a tarp for your tent to sit on. All you need is a cheap blue tarp from your local home center.

You will want a air matress to sleep on. Try them out. They range from cheap foam ones to inflable ones. Again pick what one is cumfortable and fits your budget and your type of camping. Then you want a sleeping bag. If you are camping in the sumertime a cheap square bag will do just fine. Mummy bags and other types are for colder temps and they are also lighter. Take a blanket along just incase any of you get cold. You can line you bag with the blanket for a tosty warm night.

For clothing dress for the weather. Have some type of rain gear wether that be a 10 cent poncho or a 200 dolar rain suit. It is always smart to have some warmer clothes just in case it does get cold. Dont wear your best stuff either because camping is hard on your clothes. Extra socks are always a great thing to have. I cant count how many times I was glad to have a extra dry pair of socks. It is also a smart idea to pack your clothes in ziplock bags or dry bags. That way if the bottom of your tent gets wet your clothes dont also get wet. It happens more than you think.

For cooking any camp stove and a set of pots will work. Just have extra fuel for your stove. When cooking you can do any type of food. however for your fist trip try simple food. Remember you dont have a dishwasher to wash dishes in so dont make too big of a mess. Cheap dish pans can make dish washing much easier.

Go to a sporting goods store that isn't too expensive and really look at your gear. Take your time picking out what you need for what your doing.

Dont forget a flashlight! Also bring food packed for how you will cooked. The more prep you do at home the easier it is when your camping. Packing up also pack for the way you are going to need things. That way when it is dark your flashlight is right on top. Also practice setting up your tent at home. That way you will be able to set up your tent no mater what the conditions are.

What kind of tent should we get?

TaDa

I don't know anything about camping, but we're a family of four and will be going on camping trips with the Boy and Girl Scouts. What kind of tent should we get? What style? (Idiot-proof set-up would be good.) What's a good brand? (We're in Texas, so we're more likely to be camping when it's hot not cold.) Thanks!

Answer
For car-camping I always advise families to get a separate three-man, three-season, nylon dome tent for each two or three people. Maybe some families enjoy a slumber party atmosphere the first night, but by the second night I'll bet most people would prefer a little privacy.

Some people see one of those big two or three room "cabin" tents and think that's the answer, but those things are overkill, often too large for the campsite.

Even though you're camping in the summer, a dome tent with full rain fly is essential in case of a freak storm. If it's hot you can take it off, unlike a cabin tent which is usually just one layer. Some dome tents have more mesh screen rather than nylon on the inner layer and those would be the coolest.

REI http://www.rei.com/ has many good quality tents, including their own brand which are a great deal. http://www.rei.com/product/745955

If there's any chance the Scouts might be going on a backpacking trip sometime in the future, and are required to bring a tent, you might want to think about the weight of that second "kids" tent and instead try to buy the lightest 2 man, 3 season tent. This one is reasonably light for two people to share carrying it. http://www.rei.com/product/705525

I just remembered, after all that, that I also always advise people never to buy tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc. for their first camping trip(s) and instead to borrow or rent the more expensive gear to give yourselves a chance to learn what your personal preferences are without spending big bucks. REI also rents tents, sleeping bags, pads, backpacks and camp stoves. They have six stores in TX: http://www.rei.com/FindStores?state=TX&radius=900

Campsite in Brighton?

Xenesis

Hey guys!
I'd love to go to brighton with my fiancé this summer, I am looking for some good campsite where you can rent a chalet, a mobil home or a caravan.
Your help would be very usefull as I am not from the UK.
Thanks :)

Answer
There are several places around Brighton for camping, there is a list here: http://hotels.brighton.co.uk/bodypage.asp?subheading=Campsites&url=Accommodation&mainheading=2
None of these are actually in the city itself so you'll need to check which ones have good bus routes into Brighton if you intend to visit the city as well.

Place to go camping in California?

Hayden

I'm looking for a decent place to go tent camping in California for a few days. It would be nice if it is by the beach and somewhat close to town. I'm open for almost anywhere and am not real picky on areas so any help would be great.

Answer
Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are the 2 best places for forest camping and it's really hard to beat the beauty of Yosemite. Lake Tahoe is also scenic.

If you want to camp at the beach, check out the Central Coast. New Brighton Beach in Santa Cruz is nice. Also check out Manresa San Simeon, Montana de Oro, Morro Bay State Park. Oceano Dunes south of Pismo lets you drive your car or RV onto the beach and camp.

where are some good spots to tent camp in MD preferably near kingsville

Answer
I don't know where Kingsvile is but have you considered Assateague Island, where the wild Assateague horses run free? It's been called one of the best state parks in the country.

Of course it's a little cold this time of year, but come spring it's a very popular place to camp.

Where can I go open camping in Maryland?

sandlerbas

Not sure if open camping is a common phrase, but I am wondering where I can go camping in Maryland without having to camp in a campground. While I was in WV/PA area for college, there were plenty of places that not only allowed but encouraged just going to a state forest, walking several miles into the forest and pitching a tent. Most of the state parks and state forest I see in Maryland mention campgrounds. So are there any good open camping site in Maryland, preferably by the bay?

What's a great place to move to in Washington (State)?

oakland002

I'm the out door person, who loves the camping, fishing , and hunting. I did just a little research on Washington (State) i know the east side over the mountain is kinda like farm or desert, i know there are some area that are really windy like 30 mph winds, so is there a nice mild weather area that has some forest or great for people who enjoy the out doors?

some place that has decent jobs too, low crime rates would be a plus, affordable house

stats: I'm marry and have 3 little ones
work field: security, military, hope to be a DNR someday
Wife: works for Medtronic

Answer
Alright my kind of question!

So here is the basics.

Western Washington i.e. west of the Cascade Mountains is very moderate in weather and it rains most of the year, however most of it is a light misting kind of rain. If you chose the greater Seattle area you are in the Olympic Mountain Rain Shadow Convergence Zone so weather is impossible to predict more than a day or 2 in advance. If you live o the west side of the peninsula then you are in the rain forest and will get + or - 200in of rain a year. Poulsbo on the eastern side of the Olympic Mountains is the center of the Olympic Rain Shadow and is one the most mild places on the planet.

Eastern Washington i.e. East of the Cascade Mountains is much more extreme, you will have seasons meaning snow in the winter and heat in the summer, there are also the apple trees which smell fantastic. Eastern Washington is much more even in weather distribution unless you get the into the corner with the Rockey Mountains. Just remember than the further east you live of the Cascades the hotter, drier, and more desert like it will get.

When it comes to crime Western Washington cities are mostly spotty where there are areas of crime and healthy neighborhoods. Avoid the Tacoma area, crime is worse there and know that the further north you go the more rural it is. Stanwood is a newer city about 45-60 minutes driving time north of Seattle. Then there are areas like Bellvue which is nicer, however it is also much more expensive. Everett is one of those medium cities where there are rough areas and nice areas, but you can tell the City is trying to improve on itself, particularly around the College.

Eastern washington is much more rural and unless you move to the Tri-Cities or Near the WASU there are mostly smaller towns that will be divided into nicer areas and shady areas.

I would definitely recommend Western Washington, Everett area is reasonable or Marysville North of there, I'd say Stanwood Would be a good better bet. Do a little research and kind of get a feel for what your family needs and go with it. Just remember its not too difficult to vacation a weekend to Eastern Washington if you get old on the rain.

Hope it helps.

Need to find a camping place in Washington State?

male

My church's youth group is planning a summer camp for 3-4 days (weekend) in June or July. There is going to be from 60 to 100 people wanting to go there. We'd like to cook food ourselves. We'd much like there to be a chapel. Also we'd like the place to be not far from Tri-Cities, WA (hope you know where that is ;) Please help us find something soon so we could choose the dates.
I would be very thankful for campsites' names and helpful sites.

Thank you!
I'm serious

Camping in NJ HELP????

Eloise

I want to camp in NJ. TENT! No RV or something.

Drive there... plan to camp out in tents with friends and bike or hopefully bike or drive to the shore/beach during the day.

Would prefer somewhere VERY CLOSE to Rumson... if n/a then whatever the best options are!

I know nothing about NJ & traveling from the midwest to get the nature/wildernessey aspect but the beach aspect too and would like to do an event over a long weekend.. i'm not sure what.

Any ideas?

Thanks... I'll do it this spring or summer.

Answer
I don't know of any campground in or near Rumson and I'm glad you didn't say you wanted to camp on the beach because in Jersey camping on any beach is out.
There are some campgrounds in south Jersey NEAR the beach from these you can take the car with the bike inside and bike to Mays landing, and just pedal around town which has a main street closed to cars. It's a nice quaint place with a great beach.
Try... Seaside Campground, Big Timber lake CG, Oceanview CG..they all have web sites for you to look at.
Make your reservations ASAP.a lot of places are already booked
If you check out Cape May or these campgrounds it will give a list of things going on

Answer
Camping in New Zealand. I'm not normal a very active or outdoorsy person, but I guess that's why it'd be a novelty and an exciting trip. It seems like every time I see a visually stunning film, that's where it was shot (Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc.). I just have to see it. Plus, NZ has no natural predators. No bears, coyotes, poisonous snakes/insects, etc. The most you'd have to worry about while camping would be birds nicking your cameras. All of those waterfalls, forests, mountains, volcanoes... I'd love to just put up a big tent and a clothesline, make a fire pit, set out a table, and just forget about the modern world for a good 2 weeks. Heaven.

Second best vacation: Christmas in St. Petersburg, Russia (which is actually on January 7th because of their Orthodox calendar, so you'd still get to be with your family for "real" Christmas). I've heard it's stunning. Cold lol, but stunning. And really, who doesn't want cold & snow on Christmas?

Third option (just for fun haha): historic tour of Washington, D.C. I'd love to see the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, the Smithsonian Museums, the Lincoln Memorial, etc. And of course try out one of their many famous pubs ;)

What is being done to help the people of Christchurch?

Charli

I am very worried about the people of Christchurch because I know so many people who live there.
Does anyone know any definite information about what is happening over there and what is being done to help?
Ok, I have donated £800, hopefully this might help.

Answer
Wow that's very generous of you. Thank you so much, you're a good person.

I have friends and family there who're doing ok. They've seen some traumatic things and feel very shaken up. My cousin is sleeping in a tent in a paddock because she's too scared to sleep inside.

They're doing everything they can to rescue people and they're still finding people alive, but not as often and they're finding a lot of dead bodies. It's hard for us to know a true figure. The media are saying 75 with 300 listed as missing, but that figure was given over 12 hours ago. My uncle has been pulling people from the buildings and he has seen more dead bodies yesterday than in his whole career of being a doctor, over 25 years. Another family friend ran out of her shop after the earthquake and tripped and fell over a dead body.

This website- http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4688671/Christchurch-quake-latest-info has all the latest information.

I hope this is helpful and again, thank you for your help!
