Free camping is not usually allowed on most beaches close to inhabited places but you will find a spot if you look around.

summer camp in greece?

katie

i'm currently in 9th grade and this summer i'm thinking about doing a summer camp in greece or a camp here in the usa for greek people.
do u have any camps to recomend

Answer
Be careful, very careful to go to summer camp in Greece.
To many weird individuals are prowling the grounds there.

Stay in the USA Greek camp.
It is safer.

There are criminal groups in Greece selling young girls from America to slave prostitution.
========================================
@ One has to be very careful lately, if thinking of placing their children into the care of so called "religious" camps.

To many cases lately of child abuse and child molestation in some of them.

camping tents?

rosemary j

what are some good quality camping tents

Answer
The best are made by a company called The North Face, but can be quite expensive. We camp all the time, and have a Coleman family tent, an Ozark Trail tent (from Wal-mart, I think made by Coleman), and an REI back-packer's 2-man tent. If you have any sporting goods store nearby (Bass Pro Shop has an excellent assortment), go in and talk to a sales person. Keep in mind that the size of the tent (how many people it sleeps) is a very crowded fit. For 4 people to be comfy, with duffelbags inside, you really need an 8-person tent. Keep in mind, too, seasonality, the type of material the floor is made of (you don't want it to tear if you have to put it up on a gravel or rocky area), and weight.

Family camping tent help?

What is the best family camping tent with small boys - 4, 6 and 9yrs, a gunho dad -6' 6", tons of clothes - because we need to be ready for all weather conditions, 1 frazzled mother... ? With a queen sized air matress, 2 single air matresses, and a cot. A borrowed gazebo thingy, and no stove yet...

Answer
Get information on products and buy the best you can afford, if you take proper care of a well made article it will last a long time without failure. Just be aware that many camping products are just conveniences and not essentials.

Look to anything that goes into your camping cargo as a potential menace; you will discover how easy is to be overloaded so keep it simple.

There are many good tents for families in the market (I personally like the Kelty brand, even if not bought one for a log time).

If you are planning for a base-camp and not hiking-camping I would say that military cots are another possible option for the sleeping quarters.

Include a basic survivor & medic kit for emergencies. (There are many posts already in the forum about tents, safety, and tips).

Best places to camp in Ohio? (State Parks)?

Andrew L

I am planning on going camping in October with 3 other people on a weekend, so I'd like to find a place in Ohio so it won't be too far off (I live near Columbus).

I'd like to find a place with cool trails that offers (preferably) non-electric tent camping sites. I don't want RV camping or places that are too man-made.

I camped at Hocking Hills State Park and loved it, so something similar to that (but NOT that - we want to find a new area) would be cool.
Also, any good parks that are close to Ohio in bordering states would be good. michigan, indiana, west virginia, kentucky, whatever

Answer
Walk About Campgrounds south of Zanesville Ohio were a Great place for us to camp . Our teen grandson loved it and we had a great time too. We rented a cabin and there are trails and lots of scenery and no one near the two cabins.

are there any secluded places to camp in ohio?

amos

is there a place in ohio that is not run by a campground, just a place you could go and camp in the wilderness next to some river or lake with pristine beauty, preferably in the north half of ohio or in western PA, please give me an address and directions from cleveland ohio and if possible, a picture if you know of a place that is very secluded and beautiful to camp at.

Answer
If you go to the Allegheny Trail in Pennsylvania you can camp outside, although it is really the wilderness...there is a place called the Tanbark Trail...however the whole trail runs from the southern states up into New York state...it is a well-traveled area, and if you find a map you will probably be able to track it easily...mountains, hills, boulders, lakes, sometimes cabins, lean-tos, etc...bring your gear! If I remember it runs somewhat through the central part of Penn...wish I could tell more! Have Fun!!!

Has anyone ever been in Seattle, Washington?

Drunken Ma

If so, tell me some things about it. I'm contemplating moving there and so far I've only seen pics but I want to know more info. What are the people and culture like and crime rate? Whatever info u can give will be helpful, good or bad info....

Answer
Iâve lived 35 miles south of Seattle near Tacoma all my life (aside from a few years while in college). This is the greatest place to live!

The area is a true melting pot. Ethnic groups from every corner of the globe have found homes in Seattle and surrounding communities.

The City of Seattle is an eclectic mix of just about any thing youâre looking for. Rent and housing is high. Downtown is undergoing a makeover with luxury condos and chic restaurants opening.

Crime is typical for a city Seattleâs size with the highest levels in White Center, Capital Hill, Beacon Hill and the Rainier Valley.

The job market is better here than in many parts of the country. The cost of living is high and wages vary from job to job, even from community to community. Commuting one to one-and-a-half hours each way to work is common.
Our highway system is very poor and our wack-brained politicians keep raising our taxes to pay for a âmassâ (read âmessâ) transit that no one (by them) wants and wonât begin to address the transportation needs of the region.

(none of the âstereo typesâ listed below are in any way meant to be derogatory. Rather, they're used to express the variety of peoples that make up this great place.)

Yuppies tend to live on the âEastsideâ in Bellevue, Kirkland and Redmond (home of Microsoft). Some of the nationâs most expensive home are on Mercer Island, Madrona and Medina.
Rural living can be found north of Seattle in Snohomish, west (by ferry) in Bremerton, on a dozen near by Islands, or South in places like Auburn and into Pierce County.
Fremont is know for granolas and neighboring University District is home to the U.W. with a sub-culture all itâs own. Grunge, garage bands and neo-goths all find communities in Seattle.

The Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet, 5th Ave Theatre and a host of other artistic venues offers a never ending experience to anyone looking for entertainment in the fine arts.

People here are generally friendly, very independent and very private. A âlive and let liveâ mentality exists, which has booth good and negative consequences. Almost any life style youâre looking for can be found within a 2 hour drive of Seattle.

The City of Seattle is in a geographic area known as âThe Puget Sound Regionâ, and specifically on the âI-5 Corridorâ in King Co. The I-5 corridor (From Everett to Olympia) is where the majority of Washingtonians live. There is a day and night difference in life-styles within the corridor, but one thing is common to all; the weather.

Donât let anyone fool you; it does rain here a lot! Our average 37 inches of rain doesnât all fall at the same time of course. Rather we can have days, weeks and months of gray skys, drizzle, on-and-off showers and sometimes plain old downpours.
We can get snow, but it doesnât last more than a couple days. But, it doesnât have to snow to be cold, very very cold. The thermometer might read 40 degrees outside, but the high humidity can penetrate the warmest coat and chill you to the bone. I attended college in northern Alberta Canada where temps drop below zero, but the Seattle rainy-cold is a cold all itâs own.
Spring is beautiful, and may start as early as March. It does rains in Spring, but the payoff is a profuse array of colors and a lush green that is almost overwhelming.
Summer usually doesnât start till after the 4th of July and temps and reach into the 90âs for a couple days sometimes a week, but it generally cools off in the evenings and often a long sleeve shirt is needed. On âmildâ 68 degree sunny Summer days locals dress in shorts and teeâs while tourist from hotter climates layer on the sweatshirts.
Fall is generally mild and early Fall (September) is often the driest time of the year.

Hiking, biking, skiing, golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, scuba diving, and just about every outdoor sport imaginable can be found right here! Itâs all part of living in the greatest place on earth!

So, come join us! We'd love to have you!

Need help finding a movie?

Harley Qui

Ok I cant remember the name of this movie. But I can give details. This movie is kinda old. Like 70s-80's old. It is a scary movie. A catholic family moves into a house. They discover a dark shadow figure that haunts the place. The family even goes camping to get away from the haunting but the shadow still follows them to the camp site. The mother of the family starts to write about the hauntings with her type writer. And I think even a catholic priest comes to stay at the home for a while. If anybody can tell me what the movie might be that would be awesome! My mother and I have been looking for this movie for months and still havent found it. Thank You!

Answer
The Haunted (TV 1991) starring Jeffrey Demunn and Sally Kirkland
The movie is based on the "true" hauntings of Jack and Janet Smurl in Pennsylvania.
IMDb storyline synopsis:
The Smurl family move into their new home on Chase Street only to find that it is plagued with three spirits and a demon. The demon wants to destroy their family and they are constantly desperate until they find the Warren family to get rid of them.
The Smurls brought in Father Robert McKenna. He conducted two exorcisms in Latin and more than fifty Catholic Masses, which allegedly infuriated the demon further. The demon was said to follow them on a camping trip/vacation to the Poconos and harass Jack at work. Jack claims that the female demon raped him.
EDIT: I HAVE THE CORRECT MOVIE AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED MYSELF BUT NAMING THE RIGHT ACTOR.

Has anyone stayed at the Caspar Campgrounds near Mendocino? If so, do you recommend it?

Stretch

I am thinking about going camping there but they really dont have photo's of the campspots on their website .. just curious if anyone recommends this place.
Wanting to go tent camping but they really don't have photo's of the campground on their website.

Answer
I have not been there, but here is what the camping book "California Camping by Tom Stienstra" says:
This privately operated park has opportunities for beachcombing, kayaking, fishing, abalone and scuba diving & good lookouts for whale watching. The park is across the road from the ocean and somewhat wooded with a small year-round creek runningbehind itt. The park is about midway between Fort Bragg 7Mendocinoe with Fort Bragg 5 miles to the north. Note that some of the sites are filled with long-term renters. He gives it an 8 for scenic views with a 10 being tops. They have 30 sites for tents

First time camper (embarassed about that) looking for recommendations for the best place to go?

WorkHorse

Looking for the best experience - of course near/preferably ON a lake or river but able to still be among the trees and in wooded area - not as far as Yosemite (don't have time to drive all the way there) and not crowded...primitive camping OK (going with experienced campers who don't really know the areas in CA)...I just need to know where we can go to have the best experience for a four-five day camping stay. I haven't taken time off from work in over a year and a half and am desperate to figure this out as soon as possible! I have heard Big Bear, Wheelers Gorge, Kahweh and Lake Piru...but I would love to know if those are good places. I know great camping spots are secrets that real campers keep well but I'm begging! Thanks so much to anyone who has time to help me out with this question! Oh, we are looking for tent camping...no RV's... :)

Answer
If you are in CA, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park are nice. But your best bet is to get a camping guidebook - in CA the best is 'California Camping' by Tom Stienstra.

AAA also has a free camping guide and maps (the maps are more useful than the guide).

First time camping experience...?

Mr.Chipotl

Ok, so me and a few friends want to go camping to celebrate our first year of college completed and I'm in charge of arranging everything. Personally, I've never been camping but wanted to since I was a kid. Ideally, I'd like to find a nice camping area in New Jersey that isn't "family-oriented," in other words, secluded but environmentally beautiful. Somewhere where we can build a small camp fire for barbecuing, preferably near a lake where we can swim and/or fish. Are there any sites like this in New Jersey? (Out of state sites are fine too; We're willing to make the trip) Where and what do I have to do to arrange this? Do I have to call and reserve a spot? Also, how much money do we need in order to make this trip as comfortable as possible? (We have 4 people going, including myself). If we go, it'll probably be for a weekend or so (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Please, help me make this trip memorable! College sucks...

Answer
I live and frequently camp in NJ, and it's sad to say that there are few opportunities for this type of camping in our state.

If you are looking for secluded, scenic and near water, your best bet will be the primitive campsites in Wharton State Forest in the Pinelands (Atsion, NJ). Bodine Field, Hawkins Bridge, Batona, Mullica River and Goshen Pond have hand pumps for water and pit toilets. Buttonwood Hill and Lower Forge sites have no water. Mullica River and Lower Forge can only be accessed by hiking, canoeing or horseback; motor vehicles are not permitted. All other areas are accessible by motor vehicles. Most campsites are on or a few yards from a river, creek or pond. Some of these sites require traveling a distance over unimproved sand roads, where loose sand and water holes as deep as 12" may require a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, but most can be safely accessed by an AWD SUV, CUV or Pick-Up truck.

Note that it is illegal to possess or consume alcohol in NJ parks and forests. My experience is that if you are otherwise behaving in a mature and responsible manner and being discreet, most rangers will not bother you, though there are no guarantees. But if you are noisy, have a bonfire large enough to land aircraft by, or have cans/bottles of beer or alcohol in plain view, expect to get a ticket ($75). It is also illegal to swim in any water not supervised by a lifeguard, but "wading" is permitted and, to be frank, I've never seen this enforced except when attempting to swim in an unprotected area visible from a protected one.

Reservations are accepted in-person at the ranger station or via mail using the application form listed below. Cost is $2 per person per night for primitive campgrounds. Aside from the camping fees, you'll need gear, firewood, stove fuel and food/drinks. How much this all costs you depends on how extravagant your needs. You can get by on $5 worth of food and fuel a day eating Ramen Noodles, Hot Dogs and Beans, or over $35 dining on Roast Beef Subs, King Crab Legs and Filet Mignon.

There are many other state forests and parks with camping on or nearby water; check the list on the Camping Reservations page listed below. Note that these are family-oriented campgrounds, usually with full bathrooms including hot showers, one or more playgrounds, and are frequented by families in camping trailers. But some do offer reasonable amounts of privacy and great views of rivers, lakes and mountains. Some noteworthy areas are Stokes State Forest, Highpoint State Park, Worthington State Forest (right on the Delaware River). Camping in these locations is a bit more expensive at $20/night per site, max 6 people and 2 tents. Unfortunately, Byrne (aka Lebanon) and Allaire are not on or near any water features.

Round Valley Reservoir has a unique camping area that has full facilities but is not accessible by car. You need to backpack (3 to 6 miles, depending on the site) or access the camp by water (small boat, canoe or kayak). While still a "family" campsite, there won't be any RV's and few if any small children.

Finally, if you are up for a hike, you can section-hike the Appalachian Trail and camp overnight (one night per location) for free. You would need to be completely self-sufficient including water and toilet facilities, pack out all your trash and solid waste, and move to a new location each day. In return you get to test your endurance and self-reliance while enjoying breathtaking views of the mountains, valleys and Delaware River.

Expanding out from NJ there are many great places in PA and upstate NY for remote camping. Perhaps someone local to those areas can suggest some spots that are legally open to the general public.

(P.S., Possibly hard to believe now, but you'll look back at college as one of the best times of your life.)
(P.P.S., No state parks/forests have hookups, electrical or otherwise. The State University of NJ is Rutgers, centered in New Brunswick NJ, not Madison, WI. The State College of NJ is in Ewing, NJ, formerly Trenton State College. Drew University is located in Madison, NJ and is a state institution, but has never been referred to as "the state university." All total there are 12 state colleges and universities and 19 accredited community colleges in NJ.)

Camping out a Store?

Bertram

A restaurant is opening up on the OSU campus and they are offering free food for a year to the first 250 customers. Some friends and I pl,an on camping out the restaurant 24 hours in advance and I wanted to know if anyone has any tips on making this a successful and safe journey?
Its on the north part of campus, a relatively safe area.

Answer
I knew I read about this recently:

"How to Camp out Overnight in Line

Today it has become increasingly difficult to obtain hot commodity items, such as the X-Box 360, Nintendo's Wii, the Sony Playstation 3 and Tickle Me Elmo. With the holidays coming up, it is very possible that you will have to camp out in a line overnight if you want these items.
Steps [edit]

1. Assess the item you want to purchase first and foremost. Make sure you call the store beforehand and find out how many of the items they have, what time the store opens, and if they will be handing our preorder tickets (many places do now, to avoid possible madness). If there are only six PS3 stations and you are the seventh person, it's not worth your time to stay out all night.
2. Get ready! Start preparations as soon as you know what you're getting and what day the pre-order/shipment is. Make sure do not have commitments for the night of the purchase and the day after. No school, work, parties etc. You'll be too tired for any of this after the event!
3. Gather together supplies. This varies on where you live and what time of year it is, but keeping in mind it will usually be around the hoildays, and most likely cold, you will need to think ahead. See the "Things You'll Need" list for supplies.
4. Bring a buddy. If at all possible, bring a friend, husband, wife, girl/boyfriend, sibling, co worker - anyone! There is safety in numbers and you will have someone to hold your place in line during a food run or much needed bathroom break. If you can't do that, try to seek out a friend in line. Although there can be unsavory people, the chances that hardcore shoppers will stick together and keeping away stragglers cannot be discounted.
5. Check it out beforehand. If at all possible, drive to the location the day before. Seek out possible bathrooms, coffee shops and 24 hour locations. If nothing else you will want someplace to warm up. If there are no 24/7 grocery stores, look for convenience stores.
6. Dress well. When you are ready for the big day, start early and dress warmly! Three layers on top plus a coat (sweater and turtle necks), two layers on bottom (jogging pants/flannel pants and jeans), a hoodie and hat, gloves, scarf, wool or double layers of socks and warm shoes. Bring blankets as well, three at least per person, and sleeping bags if you have them. And get to the location as fast as you can - some hardcore shoppers will camp out starting at 5 PM -before the store even closes for the night!
7. Set up your spot on arrival. When you arrive chances are you won't be the first person there. Set up camp, say hello to everyone, and ask what they are there for. Find out your place in the line. Remain kind and respectful to your fellow shoppers - you'll go through a lot together that night!
8. Try to sleep if you can, as hard as that sounds. Walk around to stay warm. If you're with a partner, take car breaks/bathroom breaks, do a snack or food run and keep an eye on the time.
9. Wake early and stay alert. As you near 5AM, stay awake and do not leave the line! The manager may be out to hand pre-sale tickets out, and you do not want to miss this - you have been camping out all night for these!

Tips [edit]

* Do not give up hope!
* You need to dress warmly, this cannot be overstated! You may find a fellow shopper who is happy to help you and lend a blanket or buy you a coffee, but you will be in for the coldest night of your life if you don't plan ahead!
* Bring chairs! Do not sit on the ground, you will chill faster. Wrap blankets tightly around you to trap in heat.
* If you plan to camp out alone, there is a chance you will not find a person in line that will save you place. Assuming you have brought enough food and entertainment supplies, the only unmet need will be bathroom-related. The solution is to bring a "texas catheter" which fits over your private parts like a condom, but it has a tube attached that lead to a bag. Unfortunately, this solution does not address excretory needs. In order to deal with these issues, you must adjust your pre-camping diet for the 24-36 hours before you start camping. This technique varies by person, but the simple answer is to minimize your intake of greasy foods and other food that encourages sit-down bathroom visits. A more extreme solution is to take over the counter medicines that inhibit the need to sit down on the potty. This approach may seem extreme, but it will make for a good story to tell your friends while you play with your new game console.

Warnings [edit]

* Do not start fights or arguments with people who drive by. Some may drive by, say they are the manager and that you are too late. Just ignore them.
* Don't carry cash on your person. Use a debit or credit card, or pay by check. Leave your purse at home.
* Carry a cell phone for time, safety and in case you need to call a relative or the hospital.

Things You'll Need [edit]

* Backpack to hold supplies
* Energy drinks, soda, or coffee/cocoa in a thermos
* Magazine or book for possible reading material
* Foldable lawn chairs
* Blankets, comforters and a pillow
* Space heater (if temperature dips below zero)
* Snacks - chips, gum, possibly candy
* Cell phone
* Ipod, portable DVD player, or handheld game system or laptop to relieve boredom"

Where is the best place to camp in Wisconsin Dells?

Rachel B

I am taking my brother and one of his friends to wisconsin Dells in August and just incase if for some reason we aren't able to check into the hotel I need a plan B. (i like to be prepared for anything) We all thought it would be fun to go camping so I am trying to pick a good campground. I have KOA and Bonanza in mind already but is there a really good place we could go? We would be bringing a tent but if we have the money, a cabin would be nice too. So what would you recommend?

Answer
Sherwood Forest! I've been to almost all of them because each time I go to Wisconsin Dells we stay at a different campground, and Sherwood Forest is my favorite. Bonanza is good, and walking distance from the main strip, but you could spend a whole day just relaxing at Sherwood Forest. They have a nice sized pool, and a pretty awesome rec room. If you need some tips on places to go, Email me! My email is deshanejennifer@yahoo.com.

Where is the best place to camp in Southern Wisconsin?

Q.

Answer
Not sure if you are looking for southeast or southwest camping, but I attached links for 3 places I've camped.
Kettle Moraine State Park is really beautiful with lots of things to do, great hiking, etc.
Big Foot Beach is really close to Lake Geneva, so there is more social activity there, the lake, restaurants, bars, etc.
Hope this helps.

Help from people who live in/near Orlando, FL?

Q. I live in Wasilla, Alaska and I'm thinking of moving to Orlando temporally for about a year. I have been there twice, once during spring break, and once in December. I am planning on driving my pickup truck down and living in the back with a mattress and the necessities. (I have a shell for the bed) I would do this for the winter season so I can save enough money to get a pretty decent place. I am a semi professional poker dealer and I have experience in the business world. Im a 20 y/o male and I want a short but decent break from everything up in Alaska. My question is, **What do you think the weather would be like if I were to backpack in my truck for the winter months?** Too hot, too cold, ect.
I didn't know it was illegal. And I was planning on one of the casinos. And hygiene wise, I wa hoping there is a 24 hr gym down there I can join to work out at and have a shower when I need. Alaska has the Alaska club for showers weights card ect. I'm not worried about being cold at all, I was worried about heat. I hate the cold yet love heat so we shall see

Answer
I have done the same exact thing you are planning on doing all around the US. I Don't know if you are planning on paying for a trailer park space or camping spot, but sleeping in your car in parking lots is illegal in Orlando. I am not saying it can't be done, just saying be careful.

As for sleeping in your truck during the Winter months. It certainly will not be too hot or cold. It actually will probably suit you well. Its typically in the 50's or 40's during the night in Orlando during the winter, rarely reaching freezing tempratures. If you have done any camping in Alaska i am sure you have a sleeping bag that is suited for at least freezing temperatures just in case. I always brought along a sleeping bag that was geared for a lower temprature than i expected to be sleeping in, just to be on the safe side.

The days are typically in the 70's, which is hot if you are in the bed of a truck, but you probably won't be in the bed of your truck when the day reaches that temprature. Best of luck to you.

What is a good capmground in key west that you can camp on the beach?

steph_pete

My birthday is coming up and we just went camping in Orlando, FL for a cousins birthday and we had a blast. But I want to go camping on a beach so im thinking maybe Key West. Does anyone know of a campground on the beach in Key West. If you know of any other place in Florida that has a campground on the beach let me know either way. Thanks!
Im planning to go with no more than 10 people and we are really picky about privacy. We usually like to feel like the area is all to ourselves. So if there is a campground or a really nice beach that someone can recommend please let me know. I dont mind staying at a hotel and going to a really nice beach. Oh by the way, Miami Beach would be my last option because I practically grew up there.

Answer
I hate to break it to you but Key West doesn't really have much for beaches. It's a beautiful area for sure, but the beaches are terrible. They are often algae choked, and smell rancid. The waters are great a couple miles off shore though, and there are lots of diving expeditions for very little cash.

camping stories?

Dr. Vittin

anybody have some good camping stories? liek, stories that happened TO YOU.

heres one of mine.

so we were trapshooting, and i was young and wasn't that strong. but i could just barely pull the trap back and click it in place. so we were all having fun trapshooting, none of us were that good, but when we hit one we'd all cheer. and then i went to pull the trap back, my arms were trembling, i felt blood rushing through my stressed arms trying desperately to pull back the trap, and through my sweaty hands the trapped sllipped, and whiplashed into my left arm, sending a chunk of flesh flying into the woods, and i still have the scar, it's a permanent one.

so any good stories from you?

Answer
I will let my son share his first:

First I must say NEVER go camping on the 4th of July, that was our first mistake. This particular campsite was just far enough away from the gulf that you coudn't see it, but close enough that there were plenty of mosquitos. A campsite across from us opened up and we liked it better so we switched sites. Later that night at about midnight a car pulled up shining its brights right into our tents and campsite(the one we had switched to to avoid loud neighbors) playing loud country music. My family has never had good luck with camping, but this was definately the worst.
***********************************************************
It seems my son forgot about the two cases of empty beer bottles on their table the next morning or the fact that we personally asked them several times to be quiet. They did finally quiet down at 4 AM, but we had to be up at 6 AM to have enough time to eat and meet family at the docks.

I never got that bothered by mosquitos, though. I had rougher camping adventures with my dad. He loved to do things like portage for two weeks in Ontario. Once on a trip through the great lakes in our canoe, my dad stopped at an island and said we could camp there a few days. He dug a hole in the ground and cut a fallen tree into a seat with a lid so we were really living well with a "toilet" for once! During that luxury stay, I spotted the most unusal frog. Though I wasn't great with spacial relations at age eight, I was sure that incredible red lake frog was as large as my head! I called for my dad to come and see the wonderful specimen. He came and looked, then gleefully told me to stay put and keep my eye on it so that it didn't get away. I couldn't wait for him to come back with his camera so that we could have a slide to share of this unique creature.

Um, he came back with an ax! Yes, I had to endure eating red lake frog that night. I tried to stick to my convictions of not eating that cute, helpless thing that lost its life only because I had the nerve to mention how cute it was to the next best living example of Jeremiah Johnson. Unfortunately, camp life can make a young girl feel famished at the end of the day, and even the best scruples are tested by such hunger. OH, I thought I would have nightmares for years, but as the years past, I found that enduring specialties like fired porcupine and road-kill hawk (that was my had-not-been-driving-long brother's doing) confused my dreams. It is true what they say: it all tastes like chicken!

OK, I have one more event to tell. My dad wanted to take a trip to show the family a beautiful area near where he had surveyed roads in Idaho in the 1950's. Frankly, when we got to the area, I was trying to picture how bad the place could have been before the gravel roads! He had us all pack our backs for a trip six miles up to a base camp. I was 12 years old and positive he was killing me with the weight of my light sleeping bad and roll. My older sister was 16 and my brother was 17. They marched along, making the horrid walk (at least that was my whining perspective at the time) seem great and rubbing it all in for me. My little sister got to ride in a pack on my father's back. Show off! When we got there, we had great fun until late that night. Even though we were experienced campers, we got rained out. I mean it! Even the matches in the plastic bags somehow got soggy. My father was livid at the thought that he couldn't do a better job, but that was the sort of thing that would have happened to anyone. It was just good that no trees fell on us. While my mom and dad tried to discuss how they would feed the family and dry things out so that things were not too heavy to pack out, my brother marched off saying he would be right back. Two hours later (enough time for us to hang things out to dry), he returned with everything for pancakes, including a cast iron skillet! I was shamed forever. I had no choice but to not whine on the six mile soggy trip back to the woody station wagon. Hmph, and my kids whine about mosquitos and loud neighbors? Try moose bones and NO NEIGHBORS!

Does anyone know of a good camp site near toronto?

Jessica

I would really love a place that has a dance, park, on site store, a pool, good crowed of people, activities both on and off site, local areas to visit (stores, hot spots, beaches, ext), somewhere close to Toronto (within an hour and a half max), id like the place to be child friendly (I have a little girl, 14mths, to young for anything now but none the less), hiking and boating would be nice. Pretty much a good place with plenty of fun for everyone.

Is there a place to camp in Chicago?

KC_Exactly

Is there a place to camp in Chicago? Near grant park preferably.

Answer
Ask the homeless. Just kidding.

But seriously Chicago is urban - no campgrounds nearby. If you want a "convenient" campground consider the Indiana Dunes. It is convenient to the Dune Park south Shore Station and it would be a 1:15 trip into the city.

If you're looking for an inexpesive place there is a hostel, see the link below.

Are there any nice/inexpensive places to camp in Chicago?

sxyskitt

I'm going to Chicago in July and am going to see a Cubs game while I'm there. I would like to try to find a campground pretty close to the field or anywhere close to Chicago. Any ideas?

Answer
No campgrounds within 25 miles of Wrigley Field...most park district facilities close at sundown...none permit camping.

Not on the list below is Illinois State Park Beach in Zion. It's about 45 miles from WF:

Camping in Southern California...ideas??

whytedaise

Hello everyone

My family insist on going camping this year for the Labor Day weekened. I have a two year old and a 5 month old; I want to choose a place that can accomodate them. I want to make sure that the place is clean, nice, activities, and family oriented campground. Does anyone know of a good place to camp and why?

Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi,

I just came back from a road trip up the coast along Hwy 1. Big Sur is great for camping. The place we found was called Fernwood Resorts, close to Pfeiffer State Park. They have everything from cabins to tent cabins and RV and tent sites. Highly recommendable. We pitched our tent right next to a river and under a redwood tree. There were many families with kids who played in the river etc. I only spent one night there, but from what I saw I would say it is a clean campground with character.

A great place to camp on the beach?.?

never_enou

ok so for my birthday i kinda wanna see something new and was thinking camping would be the best and cheapest thing. but i wanna go to california and i thought hmm whats awesome about cali. the beach so i'm wondering if anyone knows of any beaches that allow camping and if anyone has done this and if it was really fun. possibly a beach that isn't too far from like some california excitement.

Answer
My, my. Such misinformation.

There are places to camp on the beach. Most are controlled by the state. The ones mentioned above (Newport, Huntington, Hermosa, Redondo) have NO camping on the beach.

The ones Hunch mentioned, Campland on the Bay (San Diego), and Ventura Beach RV Resort, are privately owned. Newport Dunes is another. All of them cater to RV's, and have limited tent camping.

I hope your birthday is in October, because April 1 is the first day you can make reservations at the state beached for October 1. The summer months start booking in November and December. You can check them out at www.reserveamerica.com.

The two closest campgrounds are Doheny State Beach and Leo Carillo State Park. LC is about 28 miles from downtown LA, and Doheny is about 50. Doheny is about 20 miles from Disneyland, and Leo is about 15 miles from Santa Monica Pier. Note that Leo is not on the beach, you must cross under PCH to get to the beach.

We like Carpinteria Satate Beach. It has sites right on the beach, and the sound of waves puts you to sleep at night.

Good luck

Good places to camp in Pennsylvania?

Berry

I am looking for a good place to camp in Pennsylvania, preferably somewhere near water and hiking and that is dog friendly. The more secluded the better!

Answer
Ricketts Glenn State Park in the poconos near Lopez and Dallas Pennsylvania, it is an absolutely beautiful state park with a couple of really big lakes, stunning and breathtaking waterfalls, and a multitude of wildlife, miles of hiking trails throughout the mountain, and tons of evergreen forest, but there are bobcats and black bears but that is kind of expected, look it up and give the park rangers a call they could give you more details than I can, as for dog friendly I'm pretty sure you can take your dog but not 100% certain.

Is this a good tent for camping?

http://www.packncamp.com/site/498873/product/10619
Has anyone had any experience with this tent?
How does it hold up? and also, what are the dimensions of the smaller rooms? Would I be able to fit a queen sized airbed in one of them?

How about this tent? http://www.target.com/Coleman-Family-Dome-Tent/dp/B0006U9PB4/ref=sc_ri_3?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=1KRANA7WBVV0SN6KYJQ5&pf_rd_p=465348991&pf_rd_i=B000W4O8JI&pf_rd_s=bottom-11&pf_rd_m=A1VC38T7YXB528&pf_rd_t=201 Coleman Family Dome Tent

We want one big tent, not several smaller tents.

Answer
The first one gives dimensions and 10 by 18 should be plenty of room for your mattress. They are both decent tents but not top of the line. Coleman products have always been reputable. It is also plenty large for a mattress. One is square and one is more rectangular, so that might be the biggest thing to consider for sleeping arrangements.

Where to go winter camping in Lake Tahoe?

Mochi

I am planning to take my family and my puppy to do some winter camping this thanksgiving. I am planning to bring them to Lake Tahoe. It is my first time in the last 10 years to go camping. I am a beginner at this. I was wondering if anyone has some recommend campground. And also what to expect in winter camping? I don't think there will be too much snow, but it might be raining during the end of November. I read some review on Zephyr Cove Campground, and they had some horrible reviews. Any advices? Thanks.
Thanks for all the concerns. Two of my friends are experienced in winter camping, but they never camp in Lake Tahoe before. They normally go farther north to camp, but I wanted to camp somewhere around the lake, so I can get some nice sightseeing.
Thanks for all the advices. I will see how the weather is first before I make my reservation.

Answer
I'm a frequent winter camper and I spend a lot of time at Tahoe too. There are a few Tahoe area campgrounds that sometimes stay open in the winter, try Sugarpine Cove, Emerald Bay and Fallen Leaf Lake for some of the more scenic locations. The one risk about these areas (all on the west shore of Tahoe) is that part of Hwy 89 in this area is succeptable to closing during storms.

Another option a little further south is Grover Hot Springs State Park just outside of Markleeville. Grover is definitely open during the winter and the campground itself is pretty quiet. The top draw of this nice spot is the Hot Springs pool which is also open all year. It's a great place to relax after a hike, snowshoeing or skiing.

As for the weather, expect anything from sunny and mild to cold and rain to light snow to Blizzard. I've camped at Tahoe in all of these conditions and they are all manageble, but I'd say the worst would be the cold and rainy. Temps will likely drop into the low 20's to upper teens but could drop into single digits but rarely drop below zero with the exception of a few inversional valleys (Hope Valley, Martis Valley, Truckee...).

As far as dealing with the conditions, be prepared for any weather, you're car camping so might as well bring plenty of extra clothes. If you have a down jacket, bring it but don't count on it if it's raining. Bring a parka or other rain jacket which you'll need if it's raining or if the snow is falling wet. Be prepared to layer underneath your jackets. Bring tarps to provide extra shelter so you don't have to hide in your tent if it's raining or if wet snow is falling. Arrange the tarps so that they cover the picnic table as well as provide some shelter near the campfire. There are some telescoping poles that are great for putting up tarps, get about 4-8 of them and use them and the trees to guy out the tarps. Bring lots of firewood too. Insulated boots and gloves are also a must.

If you end up camping at the lake, check out Vikingsholm and Eagle Falls which are both on the west shore. If the weather is good, there are a lot of nice trails going up into Desolation Wilderness. If you decide on Grover, consider hiking or snowshoing near Pickett Junction or Hope Valley and if the weather is good, head up to Carson Pass and hike to Winnemucca Lake in Mokelumne Wilderness.

Need suggestion for Yoga class or retreat in Pune, India?

Harv Dude

I am traveling to India for the first time, primarily for business. But as a relative beginner to Yoga, I figure this is the best time to really experience the truest Yoga experience instead of the Americanized one.

Can you recommend a place when I can go on a day long retreat in or near Pune where I can meditate or practice Yoga with instruction or guidance? I am a total white-guy, English only speaker but don't necessarily want a place that caters to Americans or tourists. I just want to be safe and comfortable.

Thanks for your help. I am really looking forward to my first trip to India.

What is a good island for free camping in greece?

positivecr

I mean a nice place, with nice beaches and stuff where you won't have to worry about cops.
Except Ikaria,I've been there many times
be specific if you can, tell me the name of the beach that is good for free camping

Answer
Free camping in Greece is illegal.
http://www.ellada.com/camping.html
This means that you run the risk of getting a fine from the police, who might even come from a costal patrol boat from the sea.

If you still want to camp, Anafi, Donousa, Tilos are good spots with basic water and food supplies nearby.

If you want to be nearer to Athens, you can go to Agkistri island or to Xiliadou beach in Evoia. It is Police-free, close to civilization, but crowded in August.

If you go to Kithira, you need a vehicle to move around as there are no public transportation. There are a few beaches you can camp, Palaiopoli, Limnionas and a small one near Kapsali (I think, will have to ask my parents to confirm).

Gavdos in Crete has lots of free camping and is gorgeous, and warm weather even in october. People camp there all year round, and there is a free shower facility there. http://www.interkriti.org/camping.html

Where in Greece: Cheap, NOT-Tourist-y, beach camping, backpacker like...?

sha-bam

I'm a backpacker who has been gone for about 8 months so I am on a TIGHT budget. I am looking for the best place in Greece for a backpacker who likes to "rough-it", no shoes, laid back. Beach camping would be perfect, some what isolated, and not too much to get to from Athens. Any ideas??

Answer
Try Samothraki in N Greece.

Exactly as you described it with the added bonus that the locals are left in the neolithic era.

Excellent fee camping site, literally on the waves. Totally isolated, cheap, gorgeous.
