We're looking for a place where we can have some team bonding before seasons starts. Does anyone have a good camping site or something similar?

Answer
A good camping site, less than an hour from downtown Houston, is Stephen F. Austin State Park, which is in the Sealy area (San Felipe is the town). Exit 723 off Interstate 10. Go north about 4 miles, turn left at the sign (and Park Road 38). Get a few screened shelters together. Each will sleep 8.

camping!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

we are going camping for the first time what is stuff we should bring i dont know what to take please help 2 alduts and 2 kids

Answer
Ok lets start with the basics of your trip. You probably dont want to spend a ton of money so lets get you a list that will keep you cumfortable and having fun without breaking the bank.

Number one start with a good tent. Eureka makes many tents that are very durable and not all that expensive. Other good brands include Kelty, Coleman and Cabelas. Just get a tent that fits your family cumfortably. Pick up a can of seam sealer too. Seal your tent before you use it to ensure you will be dry. You will also need a tarp for your tent to sit on. All you need is a cheap blue tarp from your local home center.

You will want a air matress to sleep on. Try them out. They range from cheap foam ones to inflable ones. Again pick what one is cumfortable and fits your budget and your type of camping. Then you want a sleeping bag. If you are camping in the sumertime a cheap square bag will do just fine. Mummy bags and other types are for colder temps and they are also lighter. Take a blanket along just incase any of you get cold. You can line you bag with the blanket for a tosty warm night.

For clothing dress for the weather. Have some type of rain gear wether that be a 10 cent poncho or a 200 dolar rain suit. It is always smart to have some warmer clothes just in case it does get cold. Dont wear your best stuff either because camping is hard on your clothes. Extra socks are always a great thing to have. I cant count how many times I was glad to have a extra dry pair of socks. It is also a smart idea to pack your clothes in ziplock bags or dry bags. That way if the bottom of your tent gets wet your clothes dont also get wet. It happens more than you think.

For cooking any camp stove and a set of pots will work. Just have extra fuel for your stove. When cooking you can do any type of food. however for your fist trip try simple food. Remember you dont have a dishwasher to wash dishes in so dont make too big of a mess. Cheap dish pans can make dish washing much easier.

Go to a sporting goods store that isn't too expensive and really look at your gear. Take your time picking out what you need for what your doing.

Dont forget a flashlight! Also bring food packed for how you will cooked. The more prep you do at home the easier it is when your camping. Packing up also pack for the way you are going to need things. That way when it is dark your flashlight is right on top. Also practice setting up your tent at home. That way you will be able to set up your tent no mater what the conditions are.

Is tent camping a good family vacation?

Liviyaya

My family really wants to try it. What should I bring other than a positive attitude? What would I cook for meals for my kids?

Answer
It depends on the family. If your into the outdoors yeah it can be a great time. But it's not for everybody. A few friends and I took their daughters camping 3 of them had a fun time. But the other was upset because she couldn't get cellphone signal or that she was going to miss out what was happening at their local mall.

What to cook is hard to say. You know your kids better than us. We don't know if their finicky eaters so I would suggest cook their favorite food & they should be happy. To get some cooking ideas check out this Boy Scouts site.

http://www.scoutorama.com/recipe/index.cfm

As for things to bring your list can very. You will have your tent, sleeping bags, air matresses, latterns, cooking gear, etc. But there are always the little things you might forget. To save time I keep all of my gear in rubbermade totes. I have a few for different things.

One is my cooking/kitchen items. This will contain my utensils, pans, coffee pot, paper plates, etc.

Another tote is my tent stuff. This contains my groundcloth, tent air mattresses & stakes.

The final tote is what I call my general tote. This has the other items like matches, bug spray, first aid kit, extra rope, batteries, rain gear, etc.

One thing I would suggest is bring something for everybody to do. One thing I carry with is a 7 in 1 magnetic travel game set. It's small and takes up hardly any space. Another thing that is real popular at the campsites I go to is called ladderball. It a game you make out of PVC tubing, golf balls and rope. Here's a link on how to play and make the game.

Have a great time enjoy the great outdoors.

The Azaria Chamberlain Case
On the 17th August 1980, the Chamberlain family was camping at Uluru in Australia's Northern Territory, when at around eight o'clock at night, they heard a cry from the tent where their ten week old baby girl and four year old son were sleeping. Rushing to the tent, the mother of the child, Lindy saw a dingo near the tent's entrance and upon entering, realised with horror that her baby daughter Azaria, was missing and all that remained was a pool of blood on the floor. The police arrived and a search was organized but no traces of the baby were found.

The Chamberlains were interviewed the next morning and only some of the bloodstained items were removed from the tent, with many being left behind. The family was interviewed again later on that same day, by a different officer who thought the Chamberlains' recounts of the previous night were suspicious. A week passed and no new evidence was found, that is, until a tourist found Azaria's vest and jumpsuit. But despite this new piece of evidence, the crime scene was not sealed off and a full examination of the clothing was never conducted. This lack of proper crime scene and evidence analysis led the police to believe that Lindy Chamberlain was lying about her story. The lack of dingo bite marks and saliva on Azaria's jumpsuit and the fact that the baby's shoes were still tied inside the jumpsuit while the vest was inside out, heightened the police's suspicion even further. In 1981, it was however, concluded that Azaria was indeed taken by a dingo, allowing Lindy and Michael Chamberlain to at last get over the accusations after the tragic loss of their child and move on with everyday life.

This was however, not to be the case, because after a later analysis of the baby's clothing, it was found that there was a bloody handprint in the shape of a women's hand, reopening the case in 1982. Analysis of the Chamberlains' car also revealed a pair of scissors, baby's blood and some experts claimed that the rip marks on the baby's clothing were actually scissor stab marks. And so it was with this new evidence that another court case was held on the 2nd February, 1982. The case concluded for what was thought to be the last time, when Lindy was convicted with murder of her daughter and sentenced to life in prison. After serving six years in prison, there was a turn in the case when baby Azaria's jacket was unbelievably, found partly buried at Uluru. Just five days later, Lindy was immediately released from prison, but to this day, nobody knows the exact truth and we'll probably never know.

How much did you spend on your honeymoon and what did you do?

SmEllY!

I was planning to spend about $5000 on ours and go to an island, probably vanuatu. My fiance mentioned that he would like to see snow (we live in outback australia! lol) and go skiing but I wasn't too keen on an extreme sports honeymoon, would rather go snorkelling. Anyway it occurred to me today that he could take a few extra days off work and we COULD do both, maybe we could fly to New Zealand first which is close to french polynesia so our airfares from NZ to an island wouldn't be overly expensive.... What do you think?
What did you do for your honeymoon and would you have done anything differently if you had to do it over again?

Answer
We didnt spend much on our honeymoon which was delayed... we drove to the Bay of Islands Christmas day, set up a family size tent just out of Russell and did day trips from our "base" during the Christmas /new year break.
We went up to the tip of NZ... to Cape Reinga Lighthouse where my husband set up his ham radio and contacted as many hams in Australia/ NZ as he could for several hours. I helped him set up then went on a photo shoot. We later walked down to the lighthouse and drove 3 hrs back to the tent.
Next day we went on a 3 hour hike up a huge ridge and down the other side to see an old whaling station's remains. Lovely bay.
We had one day of pouring rain just before we set out on the Cape Brett tramp (hiking with loaded packs)... it turned a hard graded track into a harder grade 20km hike that was slippery. It took 11 hours hard slog to reach the lighthouse keeper's cottage where we stayed two days. The ham radio was again set up taking up all my husband's time... and I spent my time taking photos of everything out there! Beautiful spot!
We took the water taxi back to the car and drove 9hrs back home after packing the tent up. Cape Brett lighthouse stay was the highlight of the trip.

If we were to do it over??
Not go camping for honeymoon!! It is hard to cuddle in camp stretchers.
And like I'd protested all along... THE HAM RADIO IS NOT GOING ON THE HONEYMOON!!
I wanted to go to the Cook Islands for our honeymoon, but he'd already been there done that on his first honeymoon...
At least go see the South Island's alps, lakes and fiyords.

Definately come to NZ... its almost sinking under snow at the moment! LOL. We have had 3 weeks of heavy snow fall and it is so cold!

What are the better quality family camping tents?

TCMJim

We would like to purchase a camping tent for the family. I am not too keen on dome tents as I am 6' tall and do not want to crawl around inside the tent. There are three of us but a fourth, mother in-law, may join us from time to time. We are not hard core backpackers so will be mostly staying in campsites for now. I want something easy to assemble. We are on somewhat of a budget so nothing over $500. However, we do not want to buy a cheap piece of junk either. Your help would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Big Agnes, Marmot, Kelty, Sierra Designs and Eureka are great brands that make excellent family tents for under $500. You can do so much better with that kind of money than a Coleman. Coleman is OK if you have a smaller budget, but if you can afford quality by having aluminum poles, better material and water proofing, vestibules, and all that, go for it. You'll have it a long time as long as it is cared for and stored properly.

Where are some good places to go camping?

Im planning a camping trip for me and my boyfriend this summer. We want to be away from everyone but i dont want it to just be some place in the woods. i want it to be somewhere beautiful with breath taking scenery. somewhere in new jersey would be nice but somehow i dont think im going to find what im looking for here lol but anywhere that could be a days drive away would be perfect. any ideas?

Answer
I believe the three most scenic camping spots in NJ are the northwest corner along the Kittatinny Mountain Range (Stokes State Forest, High Point State Park), a bit farther south and on the Delaware River (Bulls Island State Park, though it might still be closed due to flood damage from last year), and the NJ Pinelands (Wharton State Forest, Bass River State Forest, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest).

A day's drive from central NJ can put you as far south as Florida, almost halfway across the US, or deep into several provinces in eastern Canada. The number of beautiful places within that area are too numerous to list. It's hard to choose a favorite, but Acadia National Park on the eastern coast of Maine would be high on the list, and it never gets as crowded as the popular parks out west.
.

Camping in NJ or at least the northeast?

Basil

Hi, my friends and I are looking to go camping. But we would like to sort of backpack into the woods and find a remote area by a water source and make a fire and camp out for the weekend. We don't really wanna go to one of those campsites that have benches and running water etc. Are there any cool places in NJ, PA, NY, or anywhere around there that allow that?

Answer
Harriman State Park is great. its right off the palisades Pkwy and Seven Lakes Drive. All the camping is remote. Then of course there is the famed Catskills and Adirondacks in NY. Dont overlook the Appalachian trail its all remote camping.

Then you have the Allegheny Mtns and Delaware Water Gap in Pa. NJ has the Pine Barrens

Where is your favorite place to camp in Southern California?

dreamteam3

Answer
My favorite place to camp is Lake Cachuma. It has everything you need not like some campground that are not secured this place is huge and it a safe place to camp... Not so long ago a heard that a person was killed in one of the local camp grounds. when I'm at lake cachuma I don't worry.
Each Camp site has running water so you can rinse off dishes.
Each camp site is huge with room enough for 3 tents and two cars so that you can bring a bunch of friends along. This place has flushing toilets as well as pay showers that have hot water. The lake also have boats for rent and you can also fish the down side is that you can't go into the lake but they do have two swimming pools.
You can also go exploring they have Indian painted caves... A casino is not too far away, Solvang and wineries are not too far away.
but the best part of this place they do no allow loud music after midnight so for me that cool because to don't have loud druggies that didn't pay for the spot next to you blaring loud music till 4 am.

where are good camping places in southern california?

For ages 18-21. Information would be nice thanks!

Answer
Joshua Tree is a great place to camp. but it is only feasible to do so during spring & fall. Other times it is too hot . It also gets cold in the winter, but you can still camp there. Some of my favorite places are Buckhorn, and Chilao campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest. There are also many great campgrounds near Ojai in Ventura County, my very favorites being Wheeler's Gorge or Rose Valley. Happy Camping!

Answer
Are you referring to the Great Scottish Midge? Midgeus Bitteus Extremis var Scotii?
First, stay away from water...lochs,rivers and streams, swampy marshy claddaghs, etc.
Second, go outside only when there is a high wind. Midges can't fly in that so they hide away all cozy where they can breathe.
Second and a half, only go out in bright light, preferably Glorious Scottish Sunshine cos the blighters really like evenings and nights better than bright stuff because all blood-sucking vampires do that anyway....it's only natural.
Third, buy a midge net or three to cover the places like faces that normal clothing doesn't cover
Fourth, buy Deet or similar sprays and spray everything but it's harmful on skin so take care.
Also Fourth, buy a big pack of mosquito coils, commonly called Elephant coils which you wouldn't know quite likely cos they're mostly commonly called that in Malaysia and Singapore cos the major brand of them there is 'Elephant Brand' and fishing by a river without them in the evening is a soddin' nightmare....
When you sit down for a rest or a go at the Glorious Scottish Rainbow Trout and Salmon beside a beautiful Scottish loch or river in the evening, light a couple of coils and they'll smoulder away for six hours or so unless you got cheapies which last an hour if you're lucky, and the fumes will deter midgy stuff and most other small flying things.
If you want to put one out....extinguish it, not put it out by the back door out of the way cos you won't have one there unless you've got a really posh tent....just break the smouldering end off.
Fifth, buy a sleeping bag with legs and arms and keep it on continuously with a well fitted crash helmet with a full visor, a thick scarf wrapped round your neck to seal the gap, and thick leather gloves on your hands, trousers tucked into the outer pair of socks and the join covered with well fitted gaiters, and go in winter so you stay cool enough.
Just don't drink anything. It's a bit inconvenient that way.....and later on.

If you mean ticks as in grass type ticks that live on grass, well that's one reason for the traditional arrangement of socks and boots used by walkers on the hills and far away.
Cover all exposed skin when walking in long grass and get the wrists and neck sealed well.
Wear short thick woolen socks over long 60% cotton 35% wool 5% Elastane or similar walking socks.
Roll the short woolen socks over the top of your boots to seal the gap.
Tuck the trousers neatly into the long socks, one bit of trouser each side so there are two pleats evenly spaced, one on each side, not one one side and none the other side which looks totally stupid.
Put on a pair of lightweight or heavyweight hopefully breathable waterproof gaitors for added protection.
All sealed up and tick-proofed. Jumping spider proofed. Snake bite proofed for desert and jungle walkies.
Wind proofed and even wet water splash proofed for jumping over streams and tramping through deep puddles but they won't save you from sinking up to your neck into black holes on Rannoch so take care.
Good at what they do though.
Proper professional job. Turn up to a village rambling club and watch the horrified faces.
Oh nooooo....a real one...what on Earth will he think of us.....oohh,grief.
It's happened....quite a few times...hahahaha

If you meet a wild haggis in full battle regalia it's fair game.....use anything at hand.
You'll need it.
All the others cannot be shot on a Sunday and must be treated as honorary guests at the dining table.
Have a great time.

Looking for a place in the midwest fairly near Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, Iowa etc, that are fun summer vacation areas. Preferbly geared towards teens or college students but shout out any suggestsion...I like Lake of the Ozarks, but am looking to find other options similar to it.

Answer
I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and think that is a beautifull place. You can have vey nice holidays there if you like to be in touch with nature. There are many lakes, parks and rivers where you can camp, rent a canoe, go fishing, etc. With the advantge of being a peacefull town you find things of a city such as many good restaurantes and places to go out at night. If you like music you can hear many different bands as well. I specially like to hear when they play blue grass.

how much would it cost me for a cheap disney vacation package for the month of june 2012 ?

2012 family camping tents on Deluxe 2012 6 Person Family Tent 3 bedrooms, Tents / Camping / Groups ...
2012 family camping tents image

Randall

Answer
No such thing, really. The cheapest way to see Disney (I'm going to assume you're talking about Disney World, since you're posting this in the Orlando forum) is to stay on site, camping at Fort Wilderness resort in your own tent or RV, and purchasing a base ticket for however many days you want to go to the parks. Cook at least two meals a day at your campsite, and either eat at a counter service restaurant inside the parks or pack in your lunch (small, soft-sided coolers only are allowed). My family has done this for years and it's by far the cheapest way to go.

If you're not into camping, staying at a value resort with base tickets and no dining plan will be the cheapest package you can buy. Eat at counter service restaurants and do without snacks and souvenirs and you'll save a bundle.

Do not be tempted by packages from any other source than Disney itself or AUTHORIZED sellers. Keep away from eBay, Craigslist and the like...you cannot buy "second hand" packages.

Good luck!

Help. Need ideas for vacation coming up in 3 weeks?

Uncle Penn

Really waited too long to plan this.

I live in San Jose Area. Would like to go somewhere for 3 or 4 days within 3 hours drive of San Jose. Somewhere where there are cabins or motel near a lake where there is swimming and maybe other activities would be nice. But open to lots of other things. Should be something a 6 year old boy would like too.

Please don't suggest anything in San Francisco.

Thanks.

The SJMerc said last week that reservations for the San Jose Family Camp at Yosemite have been slow this year because the camp was closed for a couple of years due to repairs and remodeling. They would most likely have room this summer. They have all kinds of family activities and have been well thought of in the San Jose Community for years.

From their website:

San Jose Family Camp is pleased to announce we will be opening for the 2012 Season beginning with Fish Camp at the end of April.

San José Family Camp is located in the heart of the Sierras near Yosemite National Park, just east of Groveland, California. Family Camp is situated on 47 acres of leased land from the U.S. Forest Service. The Stanislaus National Forest and the middle fork of the Tuolumne River serve as the scenic backdrop to this mountain playground. Family Camp provides a retreat where guests of all ages can fish, hike, swim, participate in organized programs or just sit back, relax and take it easy. It's a great experience for the entire family! So come up and rent a tent. During the Summer Family Session, the Camp provides three meals a day to campers, along with supervised recreational activities. Groups are welcome to rent out the Camp during the pre and post sessions. For questions, please contact staff at 408-794-6523 or Familycamp@sanjoseca.gov

How to clean a camping tent that smells like mildew?

Stella

I haven't used my camping tent for quite a long time and it now smells like mildew. How to get rid of this bad awful smell?

Answer
First, you need get a tote and fill it with clean water then add pine-sol in it. After that, you can place the tent, rain fly, tent poles, tent bag, stakes and stake bag in to the water, and leave them soak in the pine-sol solution for an hour or so. One hour is enough for the camping tent to absorb the aroma of the pine-sol solution, and then you will get a fresh smelling tent.

After the tent has soaked in the pine-sol solution for one hour, now you should take it out of the access water and reassemble the tent in your yard. Use water hose to pray the tent off and you should pay particular attention to the fabric on the bottom. Be sure it is thoroughly rinsed.

The last step is to dry the camping tent. You should let the tent air dry both inside and outside. Itâs important to wait until the tent and all the contents are fully dry before you pack it back up. Otherwise, the mildew will return. If you have a large family tent or multi-room tent, then you should wait patiently. If the weather is not good and you cannot dry the tent outside, you should place the tent in your garage or even inside your home or basement to let it dry. One thing you need to keep in mind is never dry your camping tent in a dryer because this could reduce the lifetime of the tent.

Answer
They will make it last for 3 hours, no way around it. These guys are hardcore. They will try to find out how much you spend on vacations annually, so lowball everything. You only go once or twice a year, you stay with family/friends, or you stay in a crap motel for $40 a night, you have an RV, you like tent camping or backpacking, you keep your vacations low-key. You get the idea. It will be easier if you don't have children, because obviously children drive vacation costs way up. Just grit your teeth, keep saying no to everything, and never ever sign up for another one.

A couple of people and myself are planning one in the next couple of years and were wondering what would the best things to pack for a winter start in Georgia. Plus what would be some things that our families could mail us along the way as the weather begins to get warmer?

Answer
Several months of free time.

Strong legs and good overall health (well, this is not absolutely necessary, but comes in handy...)

Good, comfortable hiking boots - a "must". Also, keep your feet as dry as possible. If your feet are prone to sweating, change your socks more often, and you can reduce sweating by bathing your feet in a borax solution daily for a couple of weeks before the hike and occasionally during it if the sweating comes back. Proper foot care is VITAL on a long hike. Cut your toe nails regularly, and don't let fungal infections get established between your toes. If you stat to get a blister, put a porous bandaid on it as soon as you notice it: don't let blisters grow.

Lightweight tent that is also durable. Best tent bargains are right now - end of season sales!!

Adequate water containers - you should carry at least a couple of liters at all times, and some water purifying tablets in case you get caught in a situation where you have to use them.

A bit of money for use in emergencies - $100 would be just fine.

A good, easily-carried pack: make sure it doesn't cut into your shoulders when fully loaded, and balance it properly for carrying with minimum back problems. Carry your load fairly high on your shoulders: too low is bad for the lower back.

Contact information to carry with you - not just one telephone number, but a couple and email addresses would be a help in some situations.

Rope - to help secure your tent in storms, for use as clothes-lines, etc. Recommend hemp rope, not nylon or polyester. Rope comes in handy in a variety of situations: don't be caught without it!!

Strong but thin twine.

"Emergency kit" - first aid stuff like bandaids, antibiotic ointment, aspirins, triangular bandage etc., and matches in a waterproof container, a few fish hooks and lures..... the ingredients of a good first aid and general survival kit can be found on many websites.

A good general knowledge of edible and medicinal (and poisonous!) plants wouldn't hurt... can come in handy in many situations. For example if you know that jewelweed/"touch me not" is a great antidote for poison ivy, that could save you a lot of itching!! If you know that the common plantain weed is very effective to calm down wasp and bee stings, this could also be very useful, etc.

A "tin can stove": something you can light a little contained fire in when the woods are dry, will come in useful in a variety of situations.

Maps: the trail is well marked, but if you ever get off it somehow, or like to know precisely where you are, a map is really useful!!

Couple of changes of clothing: staying dry is necessary for good sleep and good health.

Rain clothing is a "must"!! It can be very light weight but make sure it is strong and durable.

A few camp cooking things and dishes.

Food to last a few days should be carried: dried food is best. Cans are heavy.

Sun screen, and if you are sensitive, bug repellent (but if you completely ignore bug bites, they go away very quickly).

Be sure to check your body for ticks at the end of each day - if discovered on the same day, hardly ever transmit parasites.

Wear a hat - and a good walking stick will come in handy in a variety of situations.

What are the best accommodations for a weekend trip to Saugatuck Michigan?

GoodQuesti

...including camping? I posted a question on vacation spots in Michigan and Saugatuck was mentioned in one of the anwers. Any points of interests that make a long drive worth visiting this town?
We are considering summer or fall if we decide to go.

Answer
Hey, Saugatuck is a great town. It's full of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The shoreline of Lake Michigan is known for it's Bed and Breakfasts, so you might think about that. I'm from a town called St. Joseph, about 45 minutes south of there. I've never stayed in Saugatuck since it's so close to my home, but I go there often for the shopping. The city's website is saugatuck.com, they have listings of accommodations there. There are lots of places to visit while you're along the shoreline though, and of course in the summer, the beaches are wonderful!

Where to host a birthday party for 1 year old in Queens NY?

Elaine L

Our baby boy will be turning 1 in March and we are looking for places to host a birthday party. All guests attending will bring their babies that are also 1 year or under. We live in a small apartment (600 sq ft) so having it at home is out of the question. The weather will also be cold in March so we can't do outdoor picnics or BBQ. I don't mind spending money at party places that do birthdays for 1 year old but I have no idea where to start looking.

Answer
i seriously just moved from queens!!! (i LOVE that place!!)
i just asked my mom. we had mine in the apartment that we had. however, you should try fitness clubs. they cater to birthday parties. also, theres a nursery. its a block from boulavard gardens and across the street from trade fair. its about 5 blocks from st.joseph's school/church. anyway, i forgot what its called but they have a nursery there and yuo should try it. my friends mom works there.

im sorry, i really dont know any other places.
NO. I LIED. OMG. I KNOW ONE!!!
PLAYROBICS. heres the link:
http://www.playrobics.net/home.asp

i remember going there last summer while i was working in summer camp. it seriously is ideal for your needs. they do basically everything!!! and its safe...VERY safe. so no worries!!1
i hope i helped =)
oh, and tell your soon happy birthday from me!

How much would it roughly cost to travel Ireland, England and Scotland for 6 months?

Ill be living as cheap as possible. I am willing to volunteer my time for free room and I can easily go a few days without eating if necessary. I just want an amazing experience in a beautiful country that doesn't make me believe you need money to enjoy amazing things.

Answer
Aw, your plans sound awesome!

Ok, ill com back in the morning (its after 2.30 am, im tired) and add in some links, but its really possible to do on the ultra, ultra cheap. I love making plans!!! Yay!

For free.
Wwoofing. You get a bed and food in return for working on an organic farm. Ive never done it, but its there, and free. Try it!

For free and a tiny bit of money!!
Voluntary warden at a youth hostel. Youd need to sync in a training weekend somehow, which are not too regular, but once youve done this youre allowed to volunteer alone at some of the more remote youth hostels, which dont have staff. You get a small daily travel allowance~ £5 to £10 i think!! Youd need to probably have documentation to show youre a safe member of society, and no criminal record~ contact the yha. Arrange this before you come over to avoid delays and hassle.
They have a few provisions, but you should ask them if theyd make an exception~ they want comittment over 3 yrs, as youd be so eager to of a lot of it. Its for remote, generally pretty quiet places, which have no full time staff. You get your own private room, btw, so you dont have to dorm with the hoi poli : ) you book people in and tidy, but they are generally very quiet hostels, hence having no paid staff. http://www.yha.org.uk/sites/all/themes/yha/volunteering/files/Volunteer%20Manager.pdf

Small cost. Camping.
I love camping. However, the uk has had several really rainy years in a row, so the shine has tarnished a bit for me. Force 8 gale & rain on a cliff top was not cool :/
Its certainly not a long term option, esp not in ireland & scotland which have higher rainfall anyway, but something to have as a plan b if the weather turns sunny and your plans are flexible. In england most countryside is farmed so you can only camp at campsites~ around £5 pn, but scotland, ireland & wales have lots of space so wild camping is fine. The downside is luggage as youd presumably have no car. You could arrange to leave stuff at a woofing farm, and return for a stint~ i camp and ive been offered to leave my kit at places for months. People are pretty chill. The nicest, cheapest, quietest places are sometimes a bit of a treck though, so youd have to walk. Youd have to buy kit, of course, but its incredibly lovely in the sunshine and youd save money longer term.

Sofa surfing. Also free. You sign up for it with the intention of returning the offer~ you just stay on peoples' sofa for a night or two. I met someone whose son was sofa surfing his way round the world and had only awesome tales to tell. Ive never done it.

Hitch hiking is apparently pretty easy in Ireland, and is free. Im from the south west of england, and do it in devon and cornwall. Its faster than busses a lot of the time, and ive met awesome people. Obv use caution and trust your gut, but honestly, ive felt endangered more often out on a saturday night in any town w drunk guys wandering about than hitching lifts. Its harder in other areas tho. We are just nice in devon/cornwall!

Megabus. Apparently annoying other passengers abound, but if you book tickets far enough in advance, long trips are £1.50 so who cares. Also has cheap rail tickets, on regular trains.
Local busses in rural areas can be slow & inconvenient.

You dont want to be rushing about all over the place~ you wouldnt take anything in. Aim to be somewhere at least 5 days to absorb it~ thatd also reduce your travel costs.
Im numerically dyslexic and verrry tired, so im not going to attemt to ravage my brain with working out costs, but ~ nearly free.

For food, You can buy packets of biscuits (what you call cookies) for 35p, which is ?? $1 i think, and live off that. Dont aim to be too broke though better to have a shorter trip by a few weeks and enjoy yourself more, than be here longer but too exhausted to do anything. Living costs are far higher here.

Sounds awesome!! I wish you well : )

I'm buying a new family tent and want to avoid the old metal pole system that can take forever to figure out. Are the shock-corded the type that connect several smaller poles via an inserted cord? Thanks!

Answer
they are tent poles that have an elastic cord that joins 2 or more poles. that gets you away from the old school metal poles

What is a good quality steel frame tent?

djbeske

My family has long had a Coleman steel framed family size tent. it had 2 large rooms, and we really enjoyed it. Sadly the waterproofing has worn away and we have tried but ultimately failed to reseal it. So now we want to get a new one, but can't find the same kind we had.

Our budget is about $300, but for good quality we will be willing to pay more. We're open to any brands, but Coleman is our favorite. We also prefer the kind that look similar to a cube :)

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Ah the good ol canvas coleman cabin tents to bad they don't make em like that any more. New lighter materials, better fire proofing innovative changes but you can still get Coleman quality in a similar design with their famous stay dry guarantee. Try out this one,

What should I take on a survival expedition/ camping trip?

Anon

I'm thinking of going on a camping like trip with a few buddies. We're going to go into the woods and camp, but only eat what we find/fish/kill. What should I bring ? Also, if someone could think of a way to play CDs while we're out there it would be welcome. I live in New York, and it's going to take place in New York. It will last at least a week at most 3 weeks. Thank you for your time.

Answer
You will need everything on this list,
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacking-checklist.html

You will also need a wilderness permit, a campfire permit, a gathering permit, a hunting permit, a fishing permit, a trapping permit and a firearms permit since you are in New York.

Use a trail finder to find routes and destinations with good water sources and wildlife.

I'm doing a report/tourist guide for the state of Washington. I've already talked about Pike Place Market and the Grand Coulee Dam. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
You're off to a good start. Since this is for school, here are a couple places a teacher would like to see in your guide:

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. A reconstruction of the British fur trading fort.
http://www.nps.gov/archive/fova/home.htm

Lewis and Clark reach the Pacific. Read about Station Camp and Dismal Nitch:
http://www.nps.gov/lewi/planyourvisit/stationcamp.htm

The Long Beach peninsula at the very southwest corner of Washington, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.
http://www.funbeach.com/

If you would like to add another historic event/place, search the web for Pig War San Juan Island.

Good luck.

Where would you recommend stopping on my trip?

HelloToYou

My husband and I will be taking Greyhound up from Oregon, to Prince Rupert. From there, we will be traveling by ferry. We plan to camp, couch surf, and participate in other money saving activities, and just generally get a feel for different areas of BC. We also plan on taking the ferry up to Ketchikan. We plan on being gone for about 3 weeks. Do you have any advice for our travels such as where to spend time?
Yes, I am using the actual couch surfing website.

Answer
If you make it over to Vancouver Island check out Tofino, used to be kind of a hippie-ish area, you should be able to find some places to couch surf there as well as try actually surfing (are you using the actual couch surfing site? if so I'm sure there are some around there). Definitely spend some time in the Okanagan (Kelowna is probably the most popular but there is also Penticton, Vernon, Osoyoos...). Whistler is a popular destination, but the surrounding areas are also quite stunning or have some interesting sites (Squamish, Penticton)
I'm not as familiar with northern BC, but since you are in the area you should check out the Queen Charlotte Islands, especially if you are into fishing. From what I hear and see of my relatives' fishing adventures up there it is beautiful and rustic.

Moving from Rochester NY to Charlotte NC?

best family camping tents 2011 on coleman family tent coleman family tent
best family camping tents 2011 image

Jim

CANâT AFFORD TO FAIL

I currently live between Rochester and Syracuse NY just South of Lake Ontario. I live in the house I grew up in. I left only to serve in the Marine Corps and was stationed in CA & Hawaii. I enjoy driving the back roads to and from the established surrounding towns observing property, farms and the overall scenery. I have a wife and (3) boy ages 13, 12 & 10. On what seems to be very little income we enjoy boating in our 1976, 21' Penn Yan, tent camping, healthy eating, country living, Levis jeans and good shoes. We may go into the city as a family or just my wife and I, to shop and eat once every couple of months. I have enjoyed a Jewish Community Center gym membership which provided spa amenities after a day of work, prior to heading home to the country. The boys play baseball, basketball, soccer and the Xbox all day, if they had it their way. They're going to need jobs soon. We will soon need to replace our 1999 Chevy P/U and 2006 Ford Focus. My home and rental properties are in need of upgrades (including many others in upstate NY rural communities) which I cannot afford or find anyone to pay the rent consistently due to the demographics.

I have commuted to Rochester NY (45-60 min.'s) for 30 yrs. to work in the machining trades as a Mfg. Eng., a CNC Programmer, a CNC Machinist and a Toolmaker. In addition, I have been working on my BS at the Rochester Institute of Technology and was a full-time student from 2009 to 2011 at a less expensive community college. I am currently employed and my base salary has not changed since the late 1980's. My wife has re-entered the workforce after being unemployed for a year. She is building circuit boards for less money at the same company she worked at 13 yrs. ago and is a temporary employee, to boot.

I have considered moving and initially began seeking opportunities in the Pacific North West only to be humiliated by engineering and hiring managers who have questioned my abilities. I felt as though they wanted a specialist at a specific task rather that someone who was a competent, career orientated individual who isnât easily overwhelmed. After a few months, with hesitation due to the many comments I've heard and read, I began to focus on NC, as many NY'ers seem to have done.

It's been a couple of months now that I have been actively applying to positions in NC. The employment agencies are thrilled with my experience and are eager to send off my resume to the hiring managers. After they submit it, I hear nothing in return from either of them.

Recently a NE recruiting agency had contacted me regarding a position for a prominent company in NC which has exhausted their efforts in recruiting (60) local people. They are now looking in the North East for experienced candidates. I may be offered a position soon and will be required to begin work on June 1st, 2013. The position is about 1/2 hr. SE of Charlotte NC and would pay about 25% more or about what I make by working 55 hrs./wk if and when the OT is offered. I would be forfeiting the cash flow which my rentals create and the income tax return each year.

I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

Answer
It might be worth taking. It is a lovely area down there. You won't deal with much snow. Real estate and cost of living are a lot less. Most people are very friendly too. Take a ride there and do a little exploring.

i hate my dad, but i have to move with him, how can i tolerate being around him? (long please read)?

Lexi

I don't want anything to do with my dad! I just hate him. I get sooo pissed just being in the presence of him. He's moving with his new wife soon and i have to come live with them. I don't know how im gonna handle this bs.
Heres the full story..
Ive been pretty stressed out in my life currently.
When i was 12, i was diagnosed with social anxiety and depression. My parents were the reason cause of my depression. Since my parents split in 2006, i tried to have a relationship with my mom. But nothing worked, she didn't wanna listen. I realized years later that she didn't care from the start. I didn't know at the time i was depressed inside until my dad took me to see a therapist. He signed me up for therapy cause i used to cut myself. I did it cause i was tired of my feelings being ignored by mom, and at the time my dad didn't spend much time with me anymore. I realize that he was also very depressed about the split. He would tell me his problems and talk badly about my mom. They had partial custody of me. Id see her every other week. My dad ended up getting full custody of me cause she was abusive physically and verbally. My mom didn't have any maternal instincts since i was a kid. My dad was basically like a mom and dad cause he brought me clothes and spent time with me. I still loved my mom though.
Since ive been living here with my dad the last couple of years our relationship has gotten worse. It's like we don't even have one anymore.
I remember everything just started going downhill by the time i got into high school (2011). My dad constantly would insult me, talk about me behind my back badly to his friends, wouldn't listen to my feelings and he didn't and still doesn't wanna fix our relationship.
We went to family therapy last year and he couldn't control his temper and the sessions got us nowhere. We would come home and still argue and he hates every therapist ive seen. Before we attended the sessions together he made fun of me for going there. So i stopped going :( it just hurt soo much when he says hurtful things to me.
He's been dating a woman for about 6 months and there getting married next week. He only cares for his fiance. He treats her better than ive been treated by him since i was a kid, it hurts. I feel like ive did everything i could to fix our relationship. I've talked to him millions of times, went to therapy, asked family for advise and nothing works. He's so stubborn and think everyone has a problem.
He's not there for me financially, or emotionally. I've had to get a job late last year cause he always went out to spend his money on his fiance and id have nothing to eat. Ive pretty much been on my own these last 3 years and he obviously didn't wanna raise me anymore. Hes going around saying im trying to ruin his life all cause i expressed to him my pain about this ****. I don't feel comfortable moving in with him and his fiance. They don't want me around. I don't know any other family members and i don't have any close friends to move in with.
My dad told me i can stay at our house if i can pay him rent so i agreed to it. Now he f****** says a couple days ago that he changed his mind and i have to come and live with him and his wife. My mind just went insane cause my dad and i have been debating on this for about a month and i thought he understands my pain here. I don't take this situation lightly. I've emotionally invested myself in both of my parents to get treated like crap and im done with it. We had the argument about the living arrangement a couple days ago and i just got real emotional and started crying and kept thinking thoughts of suicide. I felt like i was being stabbed in my heart and thought i want to stab him but i thought it would be better if i just killed myself. I've called the suicide hot line cause i felt like i was thinking too drastically. My mind had racing thoughts and ive been very anxious. I told my dad about myself having thoughts of suicide and he told me he won't feel guilty if i die, and he didn't do anything to make me fell this way. I think him saying that just set me off. I felt like i was going insane. The only thing that calmed me down is reading my journal and listening to music. When i think about these problems i get very anxious so i just try to keep my mind off of them. But i just can't believe my dad doesn't understand why i don't wanna live with him. I thought about going to a foster home but im gonna be 17 in 4 months and i heard its hard for teens to find a home being my age. Im gonna have to move with him but i have feelings of resentment and hate for him. I just feel like im gonna explode being around him. How can i tolerate him?

Answer
I also had anxiety around that age. When the house got stressful, I pitched a tent and camped outdoors for days on end- no one bothered me. Do you live in a state where it's still warm? or have a decent yard to that in?

What's the cheapest way to get ferry's and coaches around europe?

camping place uk on ... and three of the best places to stay in Dublin | Travel | The Observer
camping place uk image

amazondebs

I'm a student and me and some of my friends are going to go round europe for a few weeks, camping in various places, whats the cheapest way to do this and I mean really cheap. We're literally just taking a tent and some clothing with us.

Answer
Early booking for the coach companies, Eurolines is most often mentioned: http://www.eurolines.com/
In the UK you can also use Megabus, can only be booked online:
http://uk.megabus.com/default.aspx
Other countries may also have cheap coach companies, but not in all countries the bus is the best option. I think you should try google for more companies.
Within France, the Netherlands and Belgium you will not find many or even any cheap coach options, but between these countries and from them to the rest of Europe you will find cheap bus/coach travel.

In some countries the train can be almost as cheap and have more options. In Germany there are special tickets for people traveling together on the slow trains, very cheap but not fast. More flexible than the bus though:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&

A good site for train info is: http://www.seat61.com/

'Remember that farther east is mostly cheaper, as soon as you are beyond Germany, Switzerland and Austria and Italy.
Countryside and small towns are cheaper than capital cities, certainly when camping.
If you are from the UK you might be able to get a cheap flight to Eastern Europe for less than you would pay on the ferry to the continent.
http://www.skyscanner.net/ or a site like it.

If this is not cheap enough yet, you can try organized hitchhiking, this is a German site, there are more, Google can help you out: http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/index.php?landnr=D&lang=GB
And in case you hit the bad weather jackpot, couch surfing:
http://www.couchsurfing.org/ or http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ and again there are more sites to be found.

where is the best place to buy an ipod 4th generation nano mains charger for europe?

Dave

I have looked on many websites and they all seem non compatibility for the forth generation of nanos. The only place i have got so far is the apple store - but this costs £30 and i was looking for something a little cheaper. Also i need it within a week!

Answer
Try this site I think can help you.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D10%26ref%255F%3Dnb%255Fss%255Fw%255Fh%255F%26y%3D10%26field-keywords%3Dipod%25204th%2520generation%2520nano%2520charger%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=bescheshoonls-21&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=19450

Hope this help.
