I haven't been camping in a long time.. and the last time I went it was spring or winter. But its summer now and my boyfriend wants me to go with him. I know to take water and drink lots of it but does anybody have any ideas on how to keep cool? And ill be in the desert. Do you think it'll be okay to wear shorts?

Answer
Shorts can be OK if your skin is happy with them but long loose pants will keep the Sun off better. They don't get too hot if you get them with wide loose flappy legs.
Wear loose tops with plenty of ventilation.
Arabians don't wear shorts or skin-fit pants in the desert.
They wear loose fitting stuff. They've been there a long time.
If the material is light still use the sunblock under it. Sun can burn you right through thin cotton pants and tops , even loose ones but loose is a lot better than tight. See the link below.
Otherwise wear a sarong like the Indians and Malaysians do. They suit long loose tops a treat.
OK for the boys too. Men in Malaysia wear them with bright shirts or with western style jackets. I lived there a few years.
They are very comfortable to wear.
It's just a tube of light material you can wrap around you in one or two layers, roll it over at the top for a built-in band and tuck one end in under itself like a bath towel gets fitted..
Get it right you can run it it all day. Not in the desert without training though.
A friend just came back from South Africa where he ran a full 26 mile marathon in 40C heat.
He's 68. No problems. Used to it
Keep exercise slow enough to avoid overheating. Pace yourself for the conditions.
In the hottest part of the day, rest up in shade. Take some shade if you don't have natural shade. A washing line and a piece of cloth. Rig it up so you can rest under it in shade and keep whatever breeze there is flowing around you. Tents get too hot.
Morning and evening are activity time. Midday and early to mid afternoon are siesta time
Change it as you can to suit best what you plan to do on the trip but always err on the side of safety.

Get a wide brimmed hat, some good sunglasses and Piz Buin or similar Factor 50 sunblock.
That Piz Buin is used by mountaineers and skiers where UV is a big problem on bright sunny days high up.
Good in desert too. I used it in the Atacama and I always have some when I go the mountains.
Get it from sports and outdoor shops or online.
Great place, the Atacama. Driest desert in the world, but you can still live.

You need plenty to drink. Freezer blocks can last a while in an insulated bag or make a bag or box from polystyrene foam and newspaper. Large Thermos flasks are OK for a while as well. Gives you a start anyway.
Fill it with water leaving plenty of room for ice expansion, screw it up tight and put the whole lot in the freezer the day before you go.
Wrap it in newspaper, then a plastic bag, and pack stuff round it.That's cool water for tomorrow if the flask is big enough to last. The bigger they are the longer they take to warm up.
You can get coolers that work by evaporation but they use up water. OK if there's a creek handy.
Otherwise just keep the water containers in shade as much as you can.
Eat well, no junk. You need to stay healthy.
Have a great time.
Fun in the Sun..walkies.

How do Libyan Refugees travel to Australia (boat, plane etc) and what are the conditons?

n

Also, what are traveling conditions like for Libyan refugees who travel to Australia in the boats, planes etc? as well as legal and illegal methods of leaving their country?

Thank you very much for your help!
Oh, and this is not for me - I'm doing a research assignment on this Topic. Thanks

Answer
Do not trust any advice you get, unless it comes from an Australian Immigration official. Many people will tell you wrong information. The law is complex, and easy to get wrong; and some people will try to take your money for bad advice.

No-one can enter Australia without a visa. If you arrive in Australia without a visa, whether by boat or plane, you will be classed as an illegal immigrant and placed in detention. Many people have to wait for 6 to 12 months or even longer in detention, before their applications for refugee status are approved. So do not try to enter Australia unless you have a valid Australian visa - even if you claim to be a refugee, you could end up in immigration detention (basically, jail) for a long time.

If you want to live in Australia as a refugee, the best way is to be classified as a refugee by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, in a refugee camp at the first country you come to. If the UN says you are a refugee, Australia may agree to resettle you as part of Australia's refugee resettlement programme. The alternative is to enter Australia as a tourist, or visiting relative of an Australian resident, then apply for refugee status once you are in Australia. You will still have to wait for some months, but at least you won't be in detention.

Taking a boat from Indonesia to Australia is extremely dangerous. Many people have drowned trying to do this. If you do arrive in Australia, you will be stuck in detention for many months, probably on an small island off the coast of Australia. And the Australian government has just made an arrangement with Malaysia, so that anyone arriving illegally in Australia by boat will be sent to Malaysia, to wait for refugee status processing. So you could end up in Malaysia for many months or years before you get residence in Australia.

It isn't all bad news. Australia is a multicultural society, with many people from many different backgrounds. There is a sizable Arabic-speaking community in both Sydney and Melbourne. Once you get refugee status, there are many support programmes to help you get established in your new life: language training, education and job skills, housing etc. There are Arabic language newspapers and television programmes. Many government departments have Arabic-speaking translators.

Once again: do not try to enter Australia unless you have clear advice from someone who works for the Australian government. The Australian Department of Immigration has information on their website, here:

http://www.immi.gov.au/visas/humanitarian/

http://www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/75processing-unlawful-boat-arrivals.htm

Hope this helps!!

I attended LSU 10 yrs. ago and we now go several times a year with the kids and rarely get off the beaten path. Now the wife and I are going and dropping the kids off at LSU baseball camp, where are some good local restaurants and dirty bars we can hang out in for a week?

Answer
you may consider killin some time at the Pro Bass Shop (drive I-12 east over to edge of BR). the place is big and has fun stuff.

the real surprise for us is how good the seafood was at their on-site restaurant. they serve a loaf of fresh bread baked in a classic mexican style...absolutely awaesome. we've begun making stops there on our way through BR. worth a try while you are in town.

the other unepxected spot we like is Superior Grill. the only good Tex mex in LA.

another recent fave is the rise of CANES. all they serve is chicken strips...but wow are they good. they have expanded from a tiny spot near campus to a new chain that is spreading across LA.

Is it different if you're in the Gemstone (or any) Honors program?
When does marching band camp take place?
I ask because I have been accepted and have enrolled, but this information is not readily available, unfortunately. I am trying to plan a trip towards the end of the summer, but I can't find out when I need to be home by.

Answer
If you have been accepted into the school, you should be getting this info. You can check the school's web site. Freshman move in first. You should be in contact with the music department asap on band.
If you have a question about something at your school, you need to ask at your school.

What are some good camping places by the beach?

Playing Li

A group of us had planned on going to Cape Henlopen State Park which is right by the beach. Rehoboth beach isn't too far either. We went there back in 2010 and had a great time. You could pretty much walk up to the beach from the actual camp site. We are from Maryland and are looking for another place which is similar because we were a little late on the plan and everything for cape henlopen is all booked up. Any ideas?

We are looking to camp, enjoy the beach and the night life.

Answer
Whatever you choose get your reservations in pronto as most get booked up 6 months in advance.

I'm a senior and have no plans or large amounts of money for spring break, so my dad offered to take a little trip and we love to go camping! What are some cool places in Michigan/bordering states/Ontario?

Answer
Tahquamenon Falls State Park, near Paradise. But it may be a bit TOO cool at spring break time. Or, if you have the time, go up to Houghton or Copper Harbor and take the boat out to Isle Royale. The Dunes to which Hugo referred are also nice. You could also check out Wilderness State Park west of Mackinaw City. If you like stargazing, that's as good a place as you can get in the Lower Peninsula.

Q. COME, LORD JESUS,
================

WHAT WILL PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA DO IF WASHINGTON DC IS COVERED WITH SMOKE FROM CANADA FOREST FIRE?

CAN US GOVERNMENT US HYDROGEN BOMBS TO STOP THE FIRE IN CANADA FROM SPREADING TO AMERICA?

I THINK IT IS A GOOD MOVE.

IT WILL SAVE TIME AND MONEY.

WE MUST REMEMER THAT WASHINGTON DC WITH 6,000,000 PEOPLE LINVING IN 10,000 SQUARE MILES OF LAND WILL BE CHOKE TO DEATH IF THE SMOKE FROM CANADA CANNOT BE CONTAIN.

IT IS TRUE THAT US GOVERNMENT HAVE ABOUT 400,000,000 GAS MASK.

BUT THERE ARE LOOPHOLES IN THE GAS MASK.

ANYWAY, WHO STARTED THE FIRE IN ONTARIO OR QUEBEC?

ANYBODY COULD START FIRE IN ONTARIO OR QUEBEC BECAUSE IT IS NEAREST TO WASHINGTON DC.

LAST TIME I HEAR THE FIRE STARTED IN RUSSIA BECAUSE OF HIGH TEMPERATURE.

SO, HIGH TEMPERATURE COULD ALSO TAKE PLACE IN ONTARIO AND QUEBEC.

THE QUESTION IS WHO THE START THE FIRE IN THE FOREST.

IN CANADA THERE ARE ALOT OF DRUG ADDICTS SO THEY ARE THE PRIME SUSPECT?

CAN US DEFEND THE FREE WORLD IF WASHINGTON DC IS COVERED WITH SMOKE?

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL DIED OR INJURED OR GO BLIND IF THE SMOKE SWEEP WASHINGTON DC.

DOES US GOVERNMENT HAVE BILLIONS OF DOLLAR TO SETTLE LAW SUE?

WILL PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA CAN LIVE IN BILLIONAIRES BILL GATES HOUSE FOR THE TIME BEING UNTIL THE SMOKE IS CLEARED IN WASHINGTON DC AREA?

BILLIONAIRES BILL GATES HOUSE IS WELL FURNISH FOR EVERYTHING BECAUSE IT WAS BUILD FOR US $ 200,000,000.

BILL GATES HOME IN LAKE WASHINGTON, MEDINA, SEATTLE IS LIKE THE WHITEHOUSE AND CAMP DAVID.

EMPEROR NAPOLEAN BONAPARTE ATTACK MOSCOW IN 1812.

WHITEHOUSE WAS BURN IN 1812.

SO, IN SIMPLE ENGLISH WASHINGTON DC COULD BE COVERED WITH SMOKE VERY SOON.

ARE ALL TH 16 INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES PREAPRE FOR NEW BALL GAME.

WHO START THE FIRE?

WHY DID HE START THE FIRE?

WHERE DID HE START THE FIRE?

WELL, THERE ARE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER IF FIRE START IN CANADA AND SPREAD TO AMERICA.

THE BIBLE MENTIONED THAT A FIRE WILL START IN LATIN AMERCIA AND NOBODY CAN PUT IT OUT AND THIS MEAN THE SMOKE COULD COME TO AMERICA.

THERE ARE FIGHT BETWEN PROTESTANTS AND CATHOLIC IN NORTHERN IRELAND RECENTLY.

SO THESE PEOPLE ARE PRIME SUSPECTED IF THEY BRING THEIR WAR TO CANADA.

WHATEVER HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND CANADA.

Answer
First off it is considered VERY rude to type in all upper case letters. It's the equivalent of shouting.

Most of your rant is silly. Washington D.C is several hounded miles from Canada. Even if smoke did reach D.C it wouldn't have any of the effects you rant about.

please list good reasons for wanting to enlist in the USMC (Marine Corp)?

Max D

so many people have bad reasons like to pay for college or other benefits but the big question what are the good just reasons for wanting to become a Marine this is for a school project i have to get reasons for a large group of people so im just asking why people think makes a good Marine

Answer
A Few Reasons Why I Am A Marine*

Come On You Sons Of Bitches !!

1) Best haircut

Hands down! You can't have a bad hair day with a high and tight. And you spend less on shampoo.

2) Dress blues

They're the coolest uniforms worldwide.

3) Bloused trousers

Another distinctive Marine look that sets the proudest service members apart.

4) The rest of the Marine sea bag

From the Alphas to camouflage utilities, uniforms just look better on a Marine than any other service member.

5) Marines don't wear dungarees

6) Most respect I

When the Marines pulled out of Haiti and Somalia, the media reported the U.S. military was pulling
out -- as if tens of thousands of Army troops weren't still in the country. Now that's respect.

7) Most respect II

When the Corps came back to Haiti after 60 years, an old man on the Cap-Haitian beach said
"Welcome back!''

8) Toughest mascot

The Marine Corps' is a bull dog. The Navy's: a goat.

9) Esprit de Corps

Even if you can't spell it or pronounce it, the Marine Corps has it in spades. One example: When sailors get tattoos, they do it to express their individuality, and their choices range from Betty Bop and Mickey Mouse to raging sea serpents. When Marines get tattoos, they do it to express their solidarity, and choose bull dogs, "Death Before Dishonor,'' and "USMC.".''

10) Best war monument

Iwo Jima

11) The Marines invade

The Army has to do the occupying.

12) The silent drill platoon

Just watching them ply their trade makes you want to wear dress blues.

13) Status

Sailors live and work on ships. Marines go for cruises -- then hit the shore.

14) Best fast attack vehicles

LAVs.

15) Best fighting knife

Ka-Bar.

16) Best duty assignments

Okinawa, Kaneohe Bay, Camp Pendleton, Diego Garcia, Moscow, North Carolina. Plus any ship at sea.

17) Worst duty assignments

Okinawa, Kaneohe Bay, Camp Pendleton, Diego Garcia, Moscow, North Carolina. Plus any ship at sea.

18) Most exotic duty assignments

Kuala Lumpur, The White House.

19) Best phone number

Call 1-800-MARINES and you've got The Corps. And if you're a civilian with the mettle to be a Marine,a recruiter there will be happy to sign you up.

20) Toughest DIs

They're so tough that when the Navy wants to train its officers, who do they call? 1-800-MARINES.

21) Toughest boot camp

When San Diego was still training Navy recruits, legend has it that recruits occasionally would jump the fence and accidentally land in Marine boot camp. The Marines would keep them a couple of days, and when the recruits were sent back, they were ready to be sailors!

22) Best motivational cry

Ooh-rah!

23) Best emblem

Eagle, Globe and Anchor.

24) Best campaign covers

The Smokey Bear hat.

25) Separate heads for enlisted and officers

Everywhere else, officers and enlisted use the same pot.

26) The only official, congressionally sanctioned hymn for any of the services

"The Marines' Hymn.''

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the Shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land and sea;

First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title of
United States Marine.

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun;

In the snow of far off northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job --
United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve;

If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded by
United States Marines!!! Ooh-Rah.''

27) Best slogan I

"Once a Marine, always a Marine''

28) Best slogan II

"Tell that to the Marines''

29) Best slogan III

"Send in the Marines.''

30) Best nicknames I

Jarhead

31) Best nicknames II

Leatherneck

32) Best nicknames III

Devil Dog... Trivia question: Where did this term come from? Answer: The German Army in World War I,whose soldiers' greatest fear was running up against the toughest American fighting men, the Marines. They called them "teufelhunden,'' or Devil Dog.

33) Most remarkable airplane

The Harrier. No other service's jets can take off and land on a dime.

34) Most dangerous airplane

The Harrier. Not a simple science, but luckily more of a danger to the enemy than to Marine fliers.

35) You're a Marine

Not a soldier or a troop.

36) That's Marines, with a capital M

37) Tradition!

The Corps is older than the republic itself!

38) Marines symbolize

Discipline, courage, honor, commitment, valor, patriotism, military virtue.........BELOW ME IS A COWARD

I am planning a 5 day trip. Where should I go. I have a friend in Miami, and a brother in Newport Beach, CA. I am not limited to those 2 places though. Where do you suggest?

Answer
I think I'd go to Minnesota and take a camping/canoeing trip up into the lakes...or Mount Rushmore...or Acadia National Park in Maine...the Durango & Silverton RR in Colorado...I've always wanted to go to all those places.

Some places that I've been that I'd highly recommend...Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone, Seattle, Washington DC, Key West, Cooperstown (NY), Gettysburg (PA), Steamtown USA (Scranton, PA), Cass Scenic RR (WV),...

Anyone know any good places to go primitive camping/backpacking?

Joshua Boy

I live in Dayton, OH, and am willing to travel up to 6 to 7 hours. I am not looking for a place that has rv's and pools and game rooms. I am looking to go backpacking for a day, and camp out in the woods with nothing but nature around me. It would be nice if there was water around.

I'm thinking of going on a camping like trip with a few buddies. We're going to go into the woods and camp, but only eat what we find/fish/kill. What should I bring ? Also, if someone could think of a way to play CDs while we're out there it would be welcome. I live in New York, and it's going to take place in New York. It will last at least a week at most 3 weeks. Thank you for your time.

What is a good appalachian trailhead in between new york city and washington dc?

bruce_eel

I live in DC and I have friends in ny. We are looking for a good place in between (2-3 hour drive) our two cities to meet and do a day hike on the Appalachian. I know this will put us in Pennsylvania somewhere - what are some good spots to meet? Thanks.

Answer
Your goal is not realistic. The Mountains in Maryland that include the presidential retreat Camp David have the Appalachian Trail. It would take you 1 hour 15 min. to 1 hour 45 minutes to get there.

In Pennsylvania the A. T. run in a north easterly direction from out beyond Harrisburg by over an hour that would mean your friends traveling from ny would need to travel 2 hours 15 minutes down I -95 to philadelphia take the Blue route to the Pennsylvania Turnpike ( Another 20 minutes) take the turnpike to Harrisburg West exit nearly dead on 1 and a half hours. Then they would have to drive over an hour to get to trail :over 5 hours of driving total.

Say you meet near ny, it would take 2 hours 45 min. to 3 hours 15 minutes north on I-95 just to make Philadelphia then you would have to drive 2 to 2 and a half hours to meet your friends.

sorry it just won't work.

camping place ontario image

francis m

I live in Toronto, Ontario and i get nervous and sad whenever the snowboarding/skiing season is ending.
-I wanted to know how far north i would have to travel to be able to snowboard during the summer.
-I am willing to drive by one province and possibly two.

Other forms:
How far north do i have to drive to be able to snowboard in Ontario?
What towns are skiiable/snowboardable during the summer in ontario?
What snowboarding/skiiing packages are offered for ontario snowboarding.

Answer
The closest place you could go snowboarding in the summer in Canada is Whistler. They have summer snowboarding camps on the glaciers there. The ski resorts in Alberta all close by May long weekend.

Where is the best place for camping in Southern Ontario if you're a beginner?

James B

I'm from Toronto and my friends and I want to go camping tomorrow. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place to camp out near Toronto. We were thinking either:

-Rouge Park in Scarborough
-Algonquin Provincial Park
-Rattlesnake Point
-Any place near Wasaga Beach

Since we're not experienced in camping, what's the best place to stay?

Answer
Go somewhere with some scenery. I really like McCrae Provincial Park, Serpent Mounds, Balsam Lake Provincial, Blue Lake P.P. Those are all a bit far from Toronto. But if you're willing to go the extra mile for some really nice places, Algonquin P.P, Bon Echo P.P are very, very nice.

Where can I rent a camping tent for really cheap?

My friends and I want to go to Yosemite for like a trip and we were trying to find a couple tents that we could use. I looked at some places that were pretty steep in price and was wondering if there was a place i could rent for really cheap. I don't need anything too fancy, though it would be nice. I am looking for tents or a tent that can fit four people.

Thanks!

Answer
Renting a quality tent for family camping is a waste of money when you can buy a quality family sized tent from Coleman for less then $75. and Colman tents come with a stay dry guarantee. Besides that you don't have to hassle with bringing it back in to the rental place. A rental agency will tack on charges for damage and run up your charge card limits and when your traveling you need access to your credit for emergencies. To discover out in the middle of nowhere that your over limit is a very big hassle. Here is a link with a good price on colman tents

What do you advise for a good four person tent?

bruar02

I don't want anything too heavy or bulky, our apartment is small. We have a two person tent, sierra designs lightning. It's too small for two adults, two smaller dogs and our stuff. I was looking at the mutha hubba 3 person tent, it seems nice but I don't want to outgrow it (what if we have kids) so now I'm thinking about a four person tent.

Answer
Depends on how much you want to spend. You have already mentioned two high priced tents of which are really no better the the colman brands or eureka and kelty brands. All three of these tent makers make quality family size tents that fold up into nice convenient size packages. Of these I recommend the Colman sundome series these are nice three season tents that come with a stay dry guarantee that the other three tent makers don't have. And the prices are a third of those high end tents you mentioned.

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000001976&categoryid=11020&brand=

In the high end category where price is no object I recommend the REI base camp 6 it is a really strong three season maybe four season, pending on where your camping, multi pole and full rain fly tent. Room enough to stand up in, yet an aero dynamic design for windy weather. Its highly rated for multi use and great for base camps.

http://www.rei.com/product/777755

Now for the Taj Mahaul of family size tents where room is of the utmost importance and yet the price is still affordable I go back to Colman tents. I prefer the WeatherMaster 10 its their biggest tent and again the stay dry guarantee.

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/ColemanCom/detail.asp?CategoryID=11020&product_id=2000001598

Bottom line you can spend a lot and get just as much if not more for a lot less. so shop around

How to fix the broken camping tent poles?

family camping tents on ... it in the car. After all, most family tents wont fit in a backpack
family camping tents image

Adela

I found one of my family tent poles is broken. How to fix that?

Answer
The easier way to fix the tent poles is to use tent pole repair sleeves. You should count your broken tent poles then go to a sporting goods store and buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles. Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

If you are not able to find a tent repair sleeve in the nearby store, you can go to a hardware store and buy some aluminum roof flashing and nylon clamps. These things can also help you to fix the tent poles. You need to cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole. After that, put clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created to secure it in place. At last, you need to wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

We are planning our first family camping trip! We will take our six-month old Corgi with us. The problem is, can I let him sleep in our tent? Or should I buy him a dog tent? But he always sleeps with me since he came to our home.

Answer
Let him sleep.with you if he is a puppy he wont be safe on his own outside in the woods with wildlife and stuff. You don't want to trap him by himself in anything he can't get out of.

Travelling from Cape Town to Durban in a rented car?

camping place cape town on Hwange National Park Zimbabwe | Hwange Game Reserve
camping place cape town image

Tim H

We are visiting my girlfriends family in Durban in September but would like to fly into Cape Town spend a few days there and then drive to Durban over the course of a few days. Firstly has anyone done this trip and could recommend a route and places of interest to visit (we have been advised to take the Garden route)? Secondly we are looking to rent a decent car but all the firms have surcharges per km driven, does anyone know of any rental firms that provide decent value cars with unlimited km's??

Thanks!

Answer
Yes I have done it several times many years ago.

Off the top of my head:

- you can either take the Garden Route along the coast or cut through the Karoo Desert which is the route people generally take when they are going to Johannesburg
- there are some beautiful national parks along the way where you can camp and Addo Elephant Park near Port Elizabeth is worth a visit
- the Transkei is beautiful and fairly unspoilt but it is very rural and the roads may not be in very good condition, the coast is off the beaten track and you need to be careful there security-wise as it is very isolated
- if you are driving through the Karoo, don't wait until the last minute to fill up with petrol as there aren't that many petrol stations
- check www.kulula.com for value for money car hire

Where has all the wealth in Cape Town come from?

bschh

The hills of Cape Town have massive and contemporary homes. Who lives there? Who built them? I mean the majority. Americans? Arabs?

Answer
The bulk of the homes are owned by South Africans however there are a great deal of Germans located along Camps bay and the coast.
Cape Town is one of the most desirable areas in Africa and as a result many are willing to invest there.
The people that live on the mountain tend to be "new money" and more recent occupants to Cape Town. The older money is in places like Bishops court etc.
The bulk of the wealth comes from successful business people.

I don't do a great deal of camping in California, but I have yet to see a free campground in California, not to say there isn't one. Here is a link to a list of Southern California beach campgrounds that gives a review of the campground and further details on each of them. Hope I helped. Have fun!

Who makes the best camping tents?

Live Wilso

I would like to know who makes the best camping tents?

Answer
"Best" is an opinion that also applies to what your budget is. The best tents in the world are the handcrafted tents made by tentsmiths these run around a thousand dollars or more. If your looking at the common tents that you can find available at sporting good stores everywhere "best" falls into what sells the best, again in each category of mountain tents to family camping tents. The best selling tents in the world are Coleman tents. Now are these the "Best" tent there is in each category and of course not NO, but are they the best tent in any category Yes Family tent camping.

If your looking for a mountain tent for back packing "Best" becomes what is lightest to carry and can withstand the high winds and severe weather. Here the competition is very big and well over 25 different tent makers all claim "best" in one way or another. I again go back to what sells the most and has good reviews. REI has the Half-dome tent that is the best seller in this category with consistent reviews.

The opinions you get here are obviously skewed by personal opinion some by folks that have absolutely no clue so if you want to find out for your self you need to do research of your own. One resource that has consistent information is BackPacker.com they do product reviews constantly and get peoples opinions form all over. Some major online sellers also have product reviews like REI, Gander Mountain, Campmor and the many many others

Have fun shopping

Answer
Discovery Channel Goes Behind-The-Scenes at Cedar Point

Sandusky, OH -- Have you ever wondered what it's like "on the inside" at the world?s largest amusement park? You know...what's happening after the park closes, who inspects the world's first "giga-coaster" at 310 feet high and how all the cars and buses are parked?

The award-winning Discovery Channel will answer these questions ? and many more ? when it takes viewers behind-the-scenes at the famed 131-year-old Cedar Point amusement park/resort during a rare one-hour documentary called "World?s Largest Amusement Park" on Monday, July 16 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Viewers of "World?s Largest Amusement Park" will learn how Cedar Point grew from an old-fashioned traditional amusement park in 1870 to become today?s world-record-breaking "America?s RollerCoast." With a total of 68 rides, including 14 amazing roller coasters, Cedar Point is home to more rides and roller coasters than any place on the planet. Located on a scenic and historic 364-acre Lake Erie peninsula, Cedar Point has evolved into a resort destination for nearly 3.5 million guests from around the world during its intense 150-day operating season.

"We chose Cedar Point as the subject for this documentary for four reasons," says Kiku Lani Iwata of Termite Art Productions, Studio City, Calif., producer of Discovery Channel's "World's Largest Amusement Park." "First, Cedar Point has more rides and more roller coasters than any other park in the world; second, it covers an enormous amount of acreage on an unusual peninsula; third, the park has a rich history; and finally, it has earned an international reputation as the world's favorite park in many amusement park surveys and polls."

Discovery Channel cameras ventured where no cameras have ever gone before at Cedar Point to document exclusive "day in the life" profiles of various park employees - from a ride operator and hotel bellhop to a performer in live entertainment and the CEO ? to capture the mega-park through their eyes and discover what it takes to operate the world?s largest amusement park.

While Cedar Point has an international reputation for its outstanding collection of roller coasters and rides, as the world's largest amusement park Cedar Point is also one of only a few "destination" parks in the world and operates four hotels with a total of 1,424 rooms and suites, a marina, RV campground and cottages and cabins for overnighters. Plus, a beach and boardwalk, water park, restaurants, beautiful landscaping, award-winning live entertainment, museum, miniature golf, go-kart raceway, children's areas, Camp Snoopy family playland with the popular PEANUTS characters, merchandise shops and games are just a sampling of what guests discover at Cedar Point.

"All of us at Cedar Point are thrilled and honored to be the sole subject of Discovery Channel's 'World's Largest Amusement Park,'" says Richard L. Kinzel, president and CEO of Cedar Fair, L.P., which owns and operates Cedar Point. "We take great pride in our park and our employees, and we couldn't be more excited for the world to see Cedar Point from behind-the-scenes on the Discovery Channel."

With a full-time team of 350 employees and a seasonal staff of nearly 5,000, Cedar Point is a hub of activity 24 hours a day, as Discovery Channel found out while spending almost a month at the massive park shooting for "World's Largest Amusement Park" during the park's 2000 season. Discovery Channel crews shot more than 46 hours of tape and spent eight months editing the program to fit the one-hour timeslot.

Documenting the 24-hour cycle of what happens at Cedar Point around the clock revealed such things as the monitoring of weather conditions and the CEO picking up trash! Viewers will be surprised to learn the endless efforts that go into making Cedar Point, the world's largest amusement park, an ongoing success.

Anyone knows any WILD camping site near london?

Maribel

Me and my mates are eager to camp but we dont want go too far in london for safety reasons, any nearby wild camping site will do aslong as we are allowed to drink alcohol and be loud at night. please provide a link if possible =]

THANKS in advance

Answer
Hi, it's me again...
That's how I do it. Camp wild nearly every time. Very rare I stay on a site. Done it on five continents.
Trouble round London is finding somewhere far enough away from civilisation so you can camp out and be noisy without any noise going where you don't want it to go.
There's also light...it goes a long way at night......even a tiny torch will show up two miles away on a dark night.
You won't find links to wild camping sites because there aren't any wild camping sites that are run as such. Wild camping is camping out in the wilds so it isn't on a site. Organised sites mostly don't allow alcohol in tents, only in the campsite bar, and they won't put up with noise at night so that's no good.
In the wilds, you find somewhere, sneak in, set up the tent, cook, drink, have fun, sleep (sometimes), take the tent down and go home or off to another handy bit of woodland or a lonely field with a high hedge.
No site fees, no bookings, and if you're careful, no worries.
There are loads of places in the Chiltern Hills you can hide well enough, or on the North Downs, or out in Essex, thousands of possible places.
It means being OK with map reading...reading the land from a map to look for a place.
Google Earth is useful. Zoom around the countryside looking for likely locations.

On almost every bit of beach and in woodland in UK fires are illegal.
Far out places and proper smoke control maybe you'll get away with it but the fines can be very heavy. A couple of big portables stoves or disposable BBQs would be a better idea but the atmosphere isn't the same sat around a stove with a couple of guitars.
I've camped in nearly every county in UK on beaches, the Purbeck Hills, South Downs, Dartmoor, Exmoor, all sorts, scrimmed up in a small green tent and with fires that are very well controlled.
I was an outdoor instructor in the Army so I can do 'stealth' fires and stay hidden reasonably OK, but every fire sends a signal of sorts either on the wind or by eye. Keeping the signal low is the idea.
That's not the idea with a big fire to sit around with guitars and singing songs.
The woodlands give you loads of firemaking materials but care is needed anywhere you go in UK if you want a fire so my normal advice is...don't bother.
Here's the gaff about fires...for the Peak District but applies all over UK....woodland and moorland anywhere.
The guy on top carries a washing machine tub eh? Hell of a backpack he's got.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090918025837AAt7Yz6
There are hundreds of places reachable by public transport.
Have fun, take care, and be brave.
Fortune favours the brave, but not the just plain daft, haha.
Have a think about any place you get to, how to look 'non-camping' if necessary, and how to get out again.

Here are some answers about it for other people....local woods, guy in a car looking for a stopping place overnight, north country one but the tips are the same for everywhere, even in Germany or China.
Intro...applies round London too

What's the cheapest way to get ferry's and coaches around europe?

amazondebs

I'm a student and me and some of my friends are going to go round europe for a few weeks, camping in various places, whats the cheapest way to do this and I mean really cheap. We're literally just taking a tent and some clothing with us.

Answer
Early booking for the coach companies, Eurolines is most often mentioned: http://www.eurolines.com/
In the UK you can also use Megabus, can only be booked online:
http://uk.megabus.com/default.aspx
Other countries may also have cheap coach companies, but not in all countries the bus is the best option. I think you should try google for more companies.
Within France, the Netherlands and Belgium you will not find many or even any cheap coach options, but between these countries and from them to the rest of Europe you will find cheap bus/coach travel.

In some countries the train can be almost as cheap and have more options. In Germany there are special tickets for people traveling together on the slow trains, very cheap but not fast. More flexible than the bus though:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&

A good site for train info is: http://www.seat61.com/

'Remember that farther east is mostly cheaper, as soon as you are beyond Germany, Switzerland and Austria and Italy.
Countryside and small towns are cheaper than capital cities, certainly when camping.
If you are from the UK you might be able to get a cheap flight to Eastern Europe for less than you would pay on the ferry to the continent.
http://www.skyscanner.net/ or a site like it.

If this is not cheap enough yet, you can try organized hitchhiking, this is a German site, there are more, Google can help you out: http://www.mitfahrzentrale.de/index.php?landnr=D&lang=GB
And in case you hit the bad weather jackpot, couch surfing:
http://www.couchsurfing.org/ or http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ and again there are more sites to be found.

What was your Duke of Edinburgh expedition like?

phoebe1990

Has anyone done their Duke of Edinburgh walk? I've got mine in a few weeks and I was just wondering what it's like, and any useful tips for packing my bag and stuff? Thanks

Answer
I did my bronze duke of Edinburgh expedition last year and I'm not going to lie, it was really hard but enjoyable at the same time. I was in a group of 4 and we all took turns to do the map reading and stuff and we managed to get to the place we were camping overnight in quite quickly. At night we cooked dinner and chatted for a while but we went to bed really early cause we were knackered! The next morning we got up sooo early and packed everything up then we started walking again. I think the second day was better for me because the route was a little shorter and everyone was looking forward to getting to the end. There was one point where we got lost though and it took us about an hour to get back on track but apart from that everything went fine. If you get good weather and you are in a good group you will enjoy it and the countryside is really beautiful. A good tip though is to pack only what you need! Your bag will feel like its getting heavier as you walk and you get really sore so only pack the essentials and also pack warm clothes and waterproofs because it gets quite cold at night in the tents and if it rains you want to keep as dry as possible :) but the most important thing is to enjoy it! Even if you feel like giving up keep going cause it's amazing when complete it and it will be worth it in the end, hope this gave you an idea of what it's like ;)
