What are some weird or amazing facts about Australia?

Answer
Newest Australian Fun Facts:

* Apparently the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per person than any other community in the history of mankind.
* Australian mines (one of our most important industries, which accounts for 15% of Australia's GDP) cover 0.02% of Australia's land mass. More land is occupied by pubs. (Can't find any statistics on the GDP here. My guess is: substantial)
* In 1954 Bob Hawke made it into the Guinness Record Book: he sculled 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Bob Hawke went on to become the Prime Minister of Australia.

Fun Facts About Australia - The Latest Stories

Crocodile Slams Into Tree
Who do you think was more scared? The Australian family camping in Kakadu National Park who woke up when a three metre crocodile tried climbing up on their tent? Or the crocodile, when the family started screaming?

The poor croc turned straight around and raced back towards the water, unfortunately overlooking the tree in its way. The tree lost a fair bit of bark and there were two big wet circles where the croc's nose had slammed into the tree...

I Can't Find Uluru
A tourist from New South Wales had to stop another vehicle to ask for directions to Ayers Rock. Nothing strange or funny about it?

Well, Ayers Rock is huge (348 metres high), is the only significant feature along the only road in the area, and he was right in front of the rock with his headlights shining on it! You'd think you'd notice, wouldn't you?

Nope. He pulled over the next car coming along, to ask for directions. The car looked like a ranger's vehicle to him. Well, they were cops instead and they immediately whipped out their breathalyser... 0.116. Too bad...
Fun Facts About Australia - Animals

* There are 1500 hundred species of Australian spiders.
* If you read about our spiders you might not like this: the average person swallows three spiders a year.
* We have over 6000 species of flies, about 4000 species of ants, and there are about 350 species of termites in Australia.
* The combined mass of all termites in the world is more than ten times the mass of all people.
* Termites are also called white ants, but they're not ants, in fact not even closely related to ants.
* Australia has the world's largest population of wild camels with one hump.
* The Tasmanian Devil does exist, and it has the jaw strength of a crocodile.
* Sharks are immune to all known diseases.
* There are more than 150 million sheep in Australia, and only some 20 million people.

Fun Facts About Australia - Geography

* No part of Australia is more than 1000 km from the ocean and a beach. (The point in the world that's the furthest from any ocean would be in China.)
* Australia has the world's largest cattle station (ranch). At 30,028 km2 it is almost the same size as Belgium.
* Population density in Australia is usually calculated in km2 per person, not people per km2.
* Australians have 380,000 m2 per person available. Yet well over 90% are cramming into our coastal cities. (Don't ask me why, I sure prefer it here in the Outback.)
* We call Australian's from Queensland "banana benders", and people from Western Australia "sandgropers".
* Tasmania has the cleanest air in the world.
* The Great Barrier Reef has a mailbox. You can ferry out there and send a postcard, stamped with the only Great Barrier Reef stamp.
* The Australian Alps, or Snowy Mountains as they are also known, receive more snow than Switzerland.
* Melbourne has the second largest Greek population in the world, after Athens.

Other Miscellaneous Australian Fun Facts

* Imagine the fully welded rails of the Ghan train track weren't restrained properly: on a hot Outback desert day they would expand at 200km/hour and at the Darwin end they'd stick out 1.1 km into the ocean.
* Star gazing: under ideal viewing conditions, like in the Australian Outback, the naked eye can detect about 5,780 stars.
* The Sydney Opera House roof weighs more than 161,000 tons.

Is the marine corps as boring as some say?

bryan with

Ive heard that those who joined hated it and wanted to leave as soon as they hit those yellow footprints at boot camp. Many say that it sucks and its the worst decision they've ever made in their life? Wtf, this shit just makes me lose my motivation to join. How have your experiences been?

Answer
Like Alex said.. It's not like battlefield 2..

My drill instructor told me once that; "there will be days when you hate the Marine Corps and there are days that you will love it."

And its true, Im a Motor transport Operator. I love to drive so 90% of the time I love it, then I have my off days.
I've only been in for a little more than 2 years and I have travled to:

Hawaii (two times)
South Korea
Fuji
and Australia

And im currently stationed in Japan.

And I get to shoot a ton of weapons. I get paid to shoot weapons, Im talking about these rounds are the size of dry erase marker!!

There are days where I do get my ass handed to me. But never take it to heart, just fix yourself and move on.

The best and most important part I LOVE the most. Is feeling like you are part of something. Cause we are one big crazy family!! Sounds dumb.. but, when you're out in the pouring rain trying to keep your tent from flooding its nice to have someone who hates their life just as much. lol

The Marine corps isnt meant for everyone. Very few make it.
At times it is boring, and you wonder why you even joined.. But, then you think of that one thing... And you realize why you did and for me it goes all away.

I love my job and I love my Corps..
Hopefully this will help you out and motivate you!!

How to plan a camping vacation?

Jesse

Me and my family live in Ohio and we are planning on visiting maine but we are very poor so we are going to camp. We have a tent but we need to know how to plan for travel, staying their and food! Thanks!

Answer
Find your camping spots and reserve where you can. http://woodalls.com/ lists all that there is and you can make reservations through
http://www.reserveamerica.com/ or http://www.recreation.gov/

Planning now for summer is great since reservations go fast for the better, popular destinations also keep in mind that gas will rise to $4.00 a gallon by June, so watch that budget.

Check lists abound on the web for what to bring here is a good one,
http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/family+camping+checklist.html

Food is easy bring simple foods that all like and stop for a pizza on the road nobody likes to hassle with cooking right when you get to your campsite with dinner made you can focus on dessert and making smores. Here are some menu planning suggestions,

Is the North section of Virginia Beach nice? will be booking a hotel next week. Any details appreciated!

Answer
Virginia Beach happens to be the most populated city in Virginia. Of course, during the summer time, the hotel prices are pricy any where near the beach. There is a family camp ground close to the beach called Holiday Trav'l Park. I recommend that if you're into the outdoors. It's only 5 minutes from the beach. You can even rent bikes. If pitching a tent is not your thing, you can always stay in a cabin. They even have some with AC/HEAT and running water. It's a good value!

Great camping places?

<3l(:e

Anyone know of a good camping place for a family to go to? The kids ages from 6 to 16. We would preferably like a place where you can hike, fish, swim...etc. (No hunting please). And maybe some other family activities.
We could do the traditional camping such as tents, or cabins.
Could be anywhere 6 to 10 hour drive from Southeast Virginia.

Answer
There are four campgrounds in "Shenandoah National Park".

Mathews Arm (mile 22.1)
Big Meadows (mile 51.2)
Lewis Mountain (mile 57.5)
Loft Mountain (mile 79.5)

Best place to raise a family in San Antonio?

camping place in san antonio image

Senor_Awes

My family and I want to move really badly. I am looking at San Antonio and I like what I see! Which neighborhood is best in the city or metropolitan area to raise a family? Alamo Heights, the far west side, and north west/east side seem pretty promising. I do not care about prices since the prices are very low to me (I live in Maryland where everything is REALLY expensive). Most importantly, which parts have good school districts?

Thank you so much for your time into reading this and answering my questions.

Answer
I'm going to have to disagree with the above poster. SeaWorld may be up and coming but it doesn't have the really nice homes to be a contender.
You're going to have three major competing areas; Alamo Heights, Stone Oak and off I-10 anything from De Zavala to 1604 and 1604 to Boerne (I call it La Cantera but La Cantera is just a small part of that area). I live near La Cantera and I love it. I think the Hill Country it's the nicest area. Nice neighborhoods around there include Shavano, Crownridge, Rogers Ranch, Dominion, etc.

Best school district is NISD, best school in Northside, I'm not sure. When I graduated in 2004 it was the school I went to, Clark, but they build so many schools, others could have surpassed it. I also heard whispers of TMI, but it was a private school near Camp Bullis and I never knew anyone that went there, just that it was hush-hush and probably expensive. Is it US News that does the college rankings? Whichever magazine does those rankings also has a ranking system for high schools. You could look through there to find out which one ranks higher.

Where is a good place to take my youth group fishing?

Matthew Mo

I am a youth leader at my church and I want to take them on a fishing/camping trip over Thanksgiving weekend. We are located in the San Antonio, TX area. Where do you recommend we go and what is the best way to go about getting a license?

Answer
Check out the facilities at Calaveras Lake, Canyon Lake and Guadalupe State Park. They are all near you. I forget what Tx. regs. are, but I think the kids under 16 may not need a license. You can get yours at a Walmart or many full service tackle shops. Most state parks offer primitive camping sites if that's what you're up for. You can contact Tx. Parks & Wildlife for other sites that may be near you.

You could have a concentration camp for wanna be clowns and they could socialize and learn new tricks. Or a concentration camp of old people and they could get earlie bird specials and watch the 5 o'clock news together. People always associate the nazis when we say concentration camp why? What bout a camp full of kittens people would love them then huh?

Answer
that's only for one reason: the media has created such a huge and terrible image of Germany and concentration camps, that every one thinks of rapists and criminals when Germans are mentioned. On one poster in my canadian school (im German) I read that in the hitler youth, pedophilia was pretty popular.... thats the worst kind of bullshit i have ever heard (it wasnt any bigger than in any other youth organization - today or in history) but yeah thanks to 65 years of the media creating this image thats why

whats the cheapest place to fly to in europe from san francisco in july or august?

R M

I have time off until the last week of august and want to travel.
what would be the cheapest still best place to fly to in europe from sfo?
I would like to stay for 10 -14 days...and travel around. I know it may not sound so realistic without any planning but such is life. any ideas? comments?
how much do you think i will need to backpack around some countries in europe in 4 weeks? what would you recommend?

Answer
One of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe is Turkey and you could probably find a very affordable package holiday in a hotel.

But for traveling around back packing then you would probably be better considering places like Holland, Germany, Belgium or France. They have great facilities for camping and the further south you go the better the chance of decent weather. You could go by train or coach to make it more affordable.

You will need to make some plans though and you would probably want to get a pass for rail or coach travel that lets you travel pretty much where you want.

what are some fun things to do during summer other than the norm? me and my friends are making a list?

Katrina S

this summer we want it to be the best. we've thought of fun stuff to do like, buy an underwater camera and take pictures with it, paint a treehouse, camp, see several movies in a row, etc but we need new fun ideas. help!

Answer
21 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOUR 21

1.) TAKE A ROAD TRIP.
Mapping the route, singing at the top of your lungs, and discovering new towns with friends is the ultimate bonding experience.

2.) LEARN TO PLAY A musicAL INSTRUMENT.
I can play only a few chords, but I love the expressive power of music--and the possibility that one day you can learn to create something beautiful through it.

3.) GO SKINNY-DIPPING!
It's the most liberating thing ever. You have to let go of your insecurities when you take off your clothes. But you're hidden by the water--so it's like bending the rules. Who decided we have to wear clothes anyway?

4.) SAVE $1,000.
Just seeing that big number in your bank account is rewarding --knowing you did it alone.

5.) KNOW YOUR GRANDPARENTS.
Ask them (or your parents) about their lives at your age. You might be shocked by how much insight they have--and the crazy things they did!

6.) BUY A LOTTERY TICKET.
But just one. Everyone should take one-million-to-one shot in their lives--it's fun to dream such a big and outrageous dream.

7.) WIN AN AWARD.
It doesn't matter if it's a contest for role models or pie-eating--you can be the best at something. And there's no fulfillment quite like everyone else knowing it too.

8.) SAY "I LOVE YOU".
It takes courage to be vulnerable. But it's the only way to create the possibility that someone will love you back the way you deserve.

9.) LEARN TO DRIVE A STICK SHIFT.
You never know when you'll get into a situation where you may need to know how. Plus, in terms of gas, these cars are better on your wallet.

10.) MILK A COW.
I was terrified to do it, but conquering this small thing helped me do even bigger scary stuff.

11.) FORGIVE SOMEONE.
A girl wrote "b****" on my locker when I was 16, and it always ate away at me inside. But when I made amends with her, the bad feelings evaporated.

12.) HAVE YOUR FORTUNE TOLD.
Sure, it's kind of silly. But doing it is really a reminder that in the end, only you hold the power to chart your own destiny.

13.) GO TO A DRIVE-IN.
Seriously the best place on earth! Where else can you watch a movie, get a great burger, talk and walk around with friends, and see the stars--all at the same time?

14.) DO YOUR OWN LAUNDRY.
It's the first step on the long (but gratifying) road to independence.

15.) RIDE A HORSE.
Okay, it might sound cheesy, but when you connect with this animal and the wind blows through your hair, it's the closest feeling to real freedom.

16.) DONATE YOUR FORMAL DRESS.
You'll give someone the chance to be a princess for one night. (And yes, it's okay to feel like one!)

17.) SEE THE OCEAN.
I felt so small next to this huge, timeless thing--and it inspired me to make the most of my life.

18.) WAITRESS ATLEAST ONCE.
Serving someone is humbling, plus it teaches you how to communicate and multitask--two skills you'll use forever.

19.) SEE ONE THING THAT IS "THE WORLD'S LARGEST"
Even if it's just a frying pan--at least it can be your temporary claim to fame!

20.) LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
Going to England, I realized how narrow my world really was--and that travel was the best way I could expand it.

21.) LEARN TO LOVE YOUR BODY.
I'm just now starting to feel perfect as I am because I have knobby knees and moles--not in spite of them.

Where can I go primitive beach camping in Florida?

camping places in florida image

porkstar3

My wife and I love to camp on the beach. There are numerous places in Texas and Louisiana where you can set up a tent either very close to the sand or on it. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can get a back country permit to camp directly on the beach at Canaveral National Seashore In New Smyrna Beach. This is a "hike in" only location, so may have the entire twelve miles of beach to yourselves.
Most of the locations already mentioned by other answerers are in developed parks and while quite nice, are still developed and you will have plenty of neighbors.

You can also go to Everglades National Park and primitive camp on Cape Sable. You cannot reach this place by car or foot, only by boat.

What should i do when my girlfriend is in florida for week?

Antonio M

My girlfriend is going to florida for a week and im a type of guy that worrys to much! so i need something to get my mind off of her.

Answer
I'm sure she is flattered by your concern.

Maybe you could plan a trip of your own to occupy your mind.

Visiting the Florida Keys might be just right for you. It's a great place to rest, relax, fish, snorkel, kayak, and dive.

Camping is inexpensive and a great way to experience Florida at its most natural and inviting way.

If you are more for night life, Miami isn't that far away. South Beach is action packed.

This site is new, but it is growing. I know a camping page or two will be published shortly.

Check out:

You might decide to plan a trip for the two of you together. I hope that whatever you choose, it will be a time for you to smile and be happy.

How to fix the broken camping tent poles?

best family camping tents on September 3, 2008 at 9:35 AM | by amandak | Comments (0)
best family camping tents image

Adela

I found one of my family tent poles is broken. How to fix that?

Answer
The easier way to fix the tent poles is to use tent pole repair sleeves. You should count your broken tent poles then go to a sporting goods store and buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles. Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

If you are not able to find a tent repair sleeve in the nearby store, you can go to a hardware store and buy some aluminum roof flashing and nylon clamps. These things can also help you to fix the tent poles. You need to cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole. After that, put clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created to secure it in place. At last, you need to wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

Where is the best campground for TENT camping in Salida Colorado?

Shoshanna

Taking a family camping trip with a tent to Salida CO. We would like to do some fishing, hiking and possibly some horseback riding.

Answer
Hecla Junction is a great area to camp near Salida. It is off the main roads and set up against the Arkansas River. The fishing there is great and so is the scenery. It is managed by Colorado State Parks, so there is a fee to stay. The tent pads are large and level. There are also pit toilets which are nice when camping with kids and ladies. If your looking for a whitewater rafting adventure check out the Bighorn Sheep Canyon section of river just downstream of Salida by an hour. It is much more exciting and far less crowded than Browns. It is also great for kids! Have Fun!

http://www.luxor.com

The Stratosphere is a nice 3 star hotel and "generally" it's the best value on the strip.
http://www.stratospherehotel.com >The Strat will price match the best rate you can find online, incase they don't already have the lowest rate.

The Orleans is a little over 1 mile West of the strip, on Tropicana, but, it has a free shuttle to the strip & also one to the Gold Coast/Palms/Rio area. The Orleans is very nice, and, it's been rated the #2 best value hotel in the World.
http://www.orleanscasino.com >Will price match

The Gold Coast is a sister property of the Orleans. The GC is a nice clean 2 star+ hotel but it's not nearly as nice as the Orleans. It is however a little more convenient to the strip, maybe 5 minutes, depending on traffic on their free shuttle. The Orleans takes around 10 minutes.
http://www.goldcoastcasino.com >Will price match

I know you said "on the strip", but I thought I would mention the latter two because they will often save you a lot of money.

Two sites I like to use to compare room rates with the hotels own.

Web sites for every hotel/casino in LV
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/referenceguide-hotels.cfm
You still have time to go to any hotels web site that you're interested in and sign up for e-mail updates. They will send you specials when they become available.

The best room rates for the entire year are from November 18th to December 28th - If you can go Sunday through Thursday you can save a bundle. Hint >I would book something at a reasonable rate now, through the hotel, then keep checking because more than likely between now and December you will be able to find a real bargain. You can always cancel the first reservation and make another.

It's best to have the reservation in hand, you never know when they will decided to have a major prize fight in LV and that runs the room rates up 200%-400%.

IMO Hoover Dam isn't a good place to go right now. Between the construction and the terror alert(they stop every car, and search every van & truck) you can sit in traffic for a couple of hours. >"A quick 35 minute trip" >You might be able to do it in 45 minutes, between Midnight and 4am<
My favorite place to go "near" LV is Mt. Charleston - Toiyabe National Forest. Mt. Charleston is at almost 12k ft, it's nice and cool, they have picnic areas, hiking trails, camp grounds, beautiful old growth forest, incredible views. The best part is it's only 35 miles North of LV on I-95 and there is very little traffic.

I'm from Toronto and my friends and I want to go camping tomorrow. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place to camp out near Toronto. We were thinking either:

-Rouge Park in Scarborough
-Algonquin Provincial Park
-Rattlesnake Point
-Any place near Wasaga Beach

Since we're not experienced in camping, what's the best place to stay?

Answer
Go somewhere with some scenery. I really like McCrae Provincial Park, Serpent Mounds, Balsam Lake Provincial, Blue Lake P.P. Those are all a bit far from Toronto. But if you're willing to go the extra mile for some really nice places, Algonquin P.P, Bon Echo P.P are very, very nice.

where are camping sites near toronto?

What is a good appalachian trailhead in between new york city and washington dc?

bruce_eel

I live in DC and I have friends in ny. We are looking for a good place in between (2-3 hour drive) our two cities to meet and do a day hike on the Appalachian. I know this will put us in Pennsylvania somewhere - what are some good spots to meet? Thanks.

Answer
Your goal is not realistic. The Mountains in Maryland that include the presidential retreat Camp David have the Appalachian Trail. It would take you 1 hour 15 min. to 1 hour 45 minutes to get there.

In Pennsylvania the A. T. run in a north easterly direction from out beyond Harrisburg by over an hour that would mean your friends traveling from ny would need to travel 2 hours 15 minutes down I -95 to philadelphia take the Blue route to the Pennsylvania Turnpike ( Another 20 minutes) take the turnpike to Harrisburg West exit nearly dead on 1 and a half hours. Then they would have to drive over an hour to get to trail :over 5 hours of driving total.

Say you meet near ny, it would take 2 hours 45 min. to 3 hours 15 minutes north on I-95 just to make Philadelphia then you would have to drive 2 to 2 and a half hours to meet your friends.

sorry it just won't work.

Where to go camping inexpensively and without a car near NYC?

Need a fairly cheap tent campground with basic bathroom and drinking water facilities near hiking trail(s). Looking to head there Friday evening after work and return Sunday evening on a train and/or bus.

Thanks!

Answer
Floyd Bennett Field
Manhattanites have always considered Brooklyn to be something of a wilderness, but it may still come as a surprise to learn that you can actually camp thereâand weâre not talking about sleeping on the sidewalk. This abandoned-airport-turned-national-park in Marine Park has room for about 100 campers, each site with a fire pit and picnic tableâand not much else. (It may be the only place in New York City where holes in the ground are considered acceptable bathroom facilities.) Itâs a little slice of serenityâ¦with bonus noise from JFK-bound planes that occasionally fly nearby!
Price: $50 per campsite for a three-night stay.
Getting there: Take the 2 or 5 train (at rush hour) to Flatbush Avenue and transfer to the Rockaway Parkâbound Q35 bus. Call 718-338-3799 for reservations.

Best places to backpack in Europe?

EmmieG

Well, I live in the UK and I want to travel the world.
But I've no idea where to start!
I want to go backpacking, and go to beautiful places and rock concerts and stuff.
I was going to just spend a month travelling around Europe at first but I'm not sure where to go... Where should I visit? Best places to backpack around in Europe?
I want to go somewhere with museums/art galleries/culture
I also plan on busking to make money.

Answer
Hi!
Well, you can't go wrong anywhere in Europe, really. So, the best thing to do is just see it all, travelling from country to country. If you're looking for historical stuff, considering you haven't visited Poland, I definitely recommend visiting Warsaw and Krakow! Some really good cities, exploding with so much history regarding WWII, etc. You can go visit Auschwitz Concentration Camp and all the beautiful 18th century castles and cathedrals in Warsaw. In addition to that, Poland is a really modern and fun country, with so much to do in terms of nightlife and sight-seeing too.
A few other cities you might want to check out...
> Germany (Especially Berlin, Potsdam, Nuremberg, Dresden). Definitely full of history relating to Nazi Germany, etc. There's the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag Parliamentary building, Neuschwanstein Castle (the castle featured in all Disney films) and loads of other little towns, forests, mountains and museums to see.
> Russia (Moscow & Saint Petersburg). A lot to see there too. Such as the Kremlin, Bolshoi Ballet Theater, Saint Basil's Cathedrals, etc. Really interesting cities to go visit. Very unique and beautiful.
> Good nightlife destinations include: Amsterdam/Netherlands, Frankfurt/Germany, Bucharest/Romania, Lisbon/Portugal & Spain. (They have some really good nightclubs & bars, places to party.)
> Definitely go travelling throughout Eastern & Central Europe. It's relatively cheaper in such countries like Hungary, Czech Republic. Not too sure, if you can & have the time, make sure you visit Kiev/Ukraine & of course,
> If you're looking for some great "unique" places, try...
> Reykjavík, Iceland
> Minsk, Belarus
> Tallinn, Estonia
> Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
> Istanbul, Turkey

Like I said, every European country is worth visiting! If you're looking particularly for a coastal country, you can try a few nations in the Balkans, such as Croatia, which is known to be really beautiful for its beaches and resorts. Also, Latvia borders the Baltic Sea, and despite it being a small country, there's a lot to see there. Otherwise you could just stick to the South of France, Spain or Portugal or someplace common to western visitors, where busking near marketplaces of towns can get you some pretty good money as it's always packed with tourists and locals. Remember that for most of these countries, you can go there for up to 3 months without a Visa. However, places like Russia, Ukraine & Belarus require you to have a specific Visa which is sometimes difficult to get hold of, but worth a try.

I really hope this helped! I spent so long answering your question, haha!
Have a safe trip! :)

whats the difference between a norse trader and viking?

Kw23

Answer
Not much, not all norsemen were Vikings and the word viking literally means:

"Scandinavian pirate, 1807, vikingr; modern spelling attested from 1840. The word is a historical revival; it was not used in M.E., but it was revived from O.N. vikingr, which usually is explained as prop. "one who came from the fjords," from vik "creek, inlet" (cf. O.E. wic, M.H.G. wich "bay," and second element in Reykjavik). But O.E. wicing and O.Fris. wizing are almost 300 years older, and probably derive from wic "village, camp" (temporary camps were a feature of the Viking raids), related to L. vicus "village, habitation" (see villa). The connection between the O.N. and O.E. words is still much debated. The period of Viking activity was roughly 8c. to 11c. In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the raiding armies generally were referred to as þa Deniscan "the Danes," while those who settled in England were identified by their place of settlement."

As for the rest of you...............

"The difference between a shop keeper and a thief. One wants to make some money supplying what you want and the other wants everything you have and will bust your head to get it."

thumbs down for your stereotypical ignorant too lazy to learn answer.

" a norse trader was just that. a viking was out to conquer new land for themselves. rent the movie pathfinder. you'll see"

Thumbs down for you too, if you think Pathfinder is an accurate representation of what a viking is you are a f*cking retard, crack open a book slappy and educate yourself.

toocan: no, just no....ugh, please just stop

"hmmm... I will guess... Viking wants to kill, pillage, rape and destroy other civs... Norse trader wants to trade stuff with other civs?"

thumbs down for "guessing" when you have the whold god damm internet at your disposal and a simple search could have yielded accurate information instead of the drivel you posted.

"A Viking is just a Norse trader on a bad day!
Easy way to tell the difference is if he is holding a pouch of money or amber etc. he is a trader or if it is a sword or axe he is a Viking.... Could be the same guy! Viking is more a verb than a noun. You go a' Viking.... "

T.D. bub, 'easy way to tell the difference..."??? are you f*cking serious? for christ sakes people cant you do any research?

"piracy.rape.enslavement. raiding coastal towns monasteries. same people different agendas. came from at least 3 norse countries Denmark,Sweden, Norway."

T.D. for you , if thats your version of "history" Hitler than must have been an o.k. guy to you.

for the love of the gods people what does it take to do a little looking around to find an accurate answer?

going to big island hawaii in Oct this year?

camping place mackenzie on find out what ever happen to the 1990 TV series, Going Places.
camping place mackenzie image

and we are going to be camping at Mackenzie State Recreation Area...so we will be on (the west side?) about 30 miles south of Hilo...Anyways, we plan to see Akaka Falls, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Red Road, Lava Tree State Monument and Rainbow Falls. What else is there to do on that side of the island? Will it be worth the drive (and money) to visit Kona? Also, where should we go to see a good Luau?

Answer
First of all, Mackenzie State Rec Area is located on the east side of the Big Island. Not many tourists go down that far and you will find mostly locals in the area. That's good and bad, in that not all locals in that part of the island are "visitor friendly", so keep that in mind. There can also be incidences of vandalism, car break-ins, etc. because it is fairly isolated. There is no water there.

The other problem of staying "at the end of the road" so to speak is that for you to visit any of the places you've mentioned, with the exception of the Lava Tree State Monument, you're looking at a minimum of an hour's drive. May not seem like much, but after a day or two of back and forth driving, gas at $5/gal, you'll rethink that.

You might consider camping at one of the campsites located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for part of your visit, instead. Not only is it more convenient to the HVNP, but they are kept up better. I will add that if you do choose to do so, you'll want to bring fairly warm clothing and rain gear as it does tend to get "cool" at night and misty/drizzling conditions are common as well.
Namakanipaio Campground is off the main road (Hwy 11) and has water, restrooms, picnic tables, etc. and is a first-come, first-serve campground. It only has 8 campsites, so can be tricky finding one open at times. http://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm

Contrary to the other response left, it is called the Big Island because it is fairly big, unless you just plan on driving around the island on a windshield-tour, there is a lot of driving to get from point to point. Kona is the western side of the island and where most of the tourist activities and hotels are to be found because it is the sunny, dry side of the island.

So, if you're wanting to go to a luau, Kona will be your destination. Kona is about 3.5/4-hrs drive from Mackenzie State Park. Its about a 2/2.5-hr drive from HVNP Unless you're a member of Costco, fill your vehicle with gas in Hilo when possible, gas runs 15-20 cents/gal more elsewhere on the island.

I invite you to visit my blog at www.myhawaiifoodfun.com, click on the Big Island under the Categories section to get a better idea of what kind of activities are available.

Please suggest places on the coast of NSW for a good holiday?

camping place near sydney image

queenmorga

We're planning to go away in a couple of weeks to the coast somewhere.
We're looking at somewhere on the Central Coast, but our options are open.
We'd like to not go further than 4hrs from Sydney at max., but if there's a really great place, then we'll consider it.
Is the South Coast good too?
We want something near a beach, but preferably not too crowded.
Thanks!!!

Answer
South Coast is good. It seems to be less crowded than the Central Coast, altough around Batemans Bay is full of Canberrans, and from Merimbula south is full of Victorians. Both Batemans Bay and Meribmbula have clubs and oubs if that is your scene. There are lots of great beaches from Kiama South.

Going north the area around Port Stephens is good. Shoal Bay and Nelson Bay are set up for the holiday trade, although they are not right on surf beaches. Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens are on the north side. They are a bit quieter.

Forster/Tuncurry is also well set up for holiday stuff but I always feel it is a bit down market - I don't know why.

Port Macquarie is on the edge of your time constraint but is another town on the beach with a bit of tourist infrastructure. I have been on Bonny Hills Beach (a bit south of Port) in January and been the only person in the water.

If you want a bit of isolation in a beautiful place try Seal Rocks - there is a campimng area there and not much else. Also Trial Bay/Hat Head and Mungo Brush fall into the quiet camping category.

Where should I go visiting Sydney Australia?

Jayah**

I have never been to Sydney Australia, but am getting an opportunity to go for 2 days before a 10 day long trip to Fiji with my college. I have 2 nights of freedom in Australia, and what to see everything worth seeing! I am a college student, so my friend and I want a memorable trip without breaking the bank. Because of our short time, we want to stay around Sydney area, as we are not renting a car. The trip is at the end of May. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Ok, i'm going to post an incredibly long answer and with you only having 2 days you'll need to pick and choose which bits you want to do, but its the answer I gave a friend who was visiting my home city a while back and its gold dust so here you go...

The Shangri-La hotels Blu Bar 36, 36th floor of the hotel on the rocks (near the end of the bridge), its got the most awesome night time view of Sydney. I'd go on a weeknight as its always busy and book a table as there are 2 separate lounges, one with the bar and one with the lounge with the view which is table service or you could go when it opens at 5pm and just book your table there and go back. You want the table service lounge, and be prepared to nurse your drink because its very very expensive. Mine and Mels cocktails in there were about $23 each!! But well worth it!

http://www.shangri/-
la.com/en/property/sydney/shangrila/dining/restaurant/blubaron36

The average bottle of beer in Sydney costs $7-8, and a Schooner costs about $6

You have to get the ferry over to Luna Park one weekend night, its absolutely crazy! Go for a drink at the bar thats on the left as you walk through the giant lady's head! Its free to get into the park so you can just go for a wander round. It is random if you just sit on the terrace with a drink for a while though.

You need to go to The Ivy, its a collection of about 5 different bars, ones a brilliant saturday night, thats the Ivybar. But you need to go in the dayime to the Pool Club. Its a big swimming pool with bars around the edge and little islands with sun loungers in the middle of the pool. It opens at 11am and its brilliant! There's the webpage if you want to look:
http://www.merivale.com/#/ivy/poolclub

The absolute best view and pictures you'll get in the whole city are from Lady MacQuaries Chair in the park. To get there, if your standing facing the opera house at the bottom of the stairs, go right through the botanical garden gates and follow the wall path all the way round. This is also an absolutely awesome place to watch the fireworks from on New Years.

Darling Harbours great for bars in the daytime, happy hour on the weekends 3-5pm and most of them do pretty good deals like $2-3 schooners and wine. And some great deals on food. Me and mel had the best hangover day ever sat at "Nicky's" its an italian style restaurant but they have really good deals all afternoon.

Ok... Off alcohol!

Manly is a brilliant place, plus the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is i think the number 1 thing to do for tourists. Its about $13 return, and there's a pub about halfway down the corso (main shopping strip) that looks a bit like a wetherspoons and they do the best $10 steak chips and salad i've ever had! Plus the beach is the closest really nice beach to the City.

And on that note.... Bondi Beach is overrated, crowded all the time, and crap!!! Go, so you can say you've been but seriously, its not a great beach. If you want to do a learn to surf, go to Manly. And go up to the Northern Beaches at least once. They're some of the best beaches in the country: Collary, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Bilgola, Avalon, Palm Beach. Or you could just kill 2 birds with 1 stone and go up to Palm Beach where they film Home and Away. To get there just jump on the L90 bus from Wynyard main bus terminal, it takes about an hour but its well worth it for a day at a beautiful huge beach which is most of the time absolutely empty in the week so you should have it pretty much to yourself!

If you can, go camping at "The Basin" on Pittwater, in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase national park. Its the most beautiful place i've ever seen in my life with the best swimming and weather! Its got this huge lake/inlet thing which is always really warm and you can swim right round up into the bushland. Plus Pittwater is beautiful on its own.
You just get the bus up to palm beach but get off at the ferry port, barrenjoey house restaurant, then get a 15min ferry over there. There are massive BBQ's so you can just take food over with you, you have to book it, but it is amazing you won't be disappointed! There is absolutely nothing there though, not even a shop, Its a hundred miles from anywhere by car! To book the camping call 02 99741011

Oh, and I don't know if your interested, but in Manly there's a colony of 'Little Penguins' That live under the ferry port near the beach and if you sit on the wall between 8-10pm you can see them all come waddling up the beach!

I need some advice of where a good place to organize a camping trip for a college reunion (15 people). Im interested in finding a place in central NY as everyone lives all around the state. What are some good campgrounds in the Rhode Island/Connecticut area?

Samantha

Also how old do you have to be to make reservations, and if myself and three friends want to go who are 16 and the person making the reservations and is coming with us is 19, would that be okay or would that be against camp rules. We want to make reservations for saturday night this weekend, would that be too short of notice? Thanks.

Answer
Hands down the best place is Pachaug State Forest. Its on the CT/RI line in Voluntown, CT. Lots of camping space so you have your privacy. If you camp at the Green Falls area, you have a beautiful and clean pond to swim or fish in. As far as the age issue, you can call them at (860) 376-4075
or check out the website http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325072&depNav_GID=1650
