Does anyone know a suitable camping place for Reading Festival 2010?

...

My friend and I are going to Reading Festival this year, and as it is our first year we're not really sure where to camp. I know that yellow is the wildest site, and white is the quietest, but we would like a balance between the two, and as a result of this are not sure which of the others to camp in!
As we are two 16 year old camping by ourselves (however we will be meeting up with other people during the festival) is there a safer place to camp?
And how safe is it to keep stuff in our tents? It won't be valuables or anything, just clothes, food, sleeping bags etc?
Thanks :)

Answer
Your choice...yellow or white...decision time...O the agony, haha.
For a first time festival it's best to err on the safe side...choose the quiet one....but it's your choice.
Only take to festivals what you can afford to lose or get ruined. No festivals are totally safe, and some are bad for getting stuff lost. Reading is a bit wild at times. Good area though and the river Thames is great at Reading. You'll see the festival posters hung from the bridges right across the river.
You'd be best to play safe with any festival you go to. Take a money belt for your cash, tickets, and other valuable stuff.
Put your SIM card into an old phone and take that one. Get a cheap MP3, download some tracks onto it, and leave the best one with your favourite tracks on at home. Take a cheap camera and plenty of films or SD cards.
That way the good stuff is safe at home.
Take clothes that you don't mind getting messed up a bit.
You can make a tent more secure by putting an extra cover over it and pegging it down all round when you leave the tent for a long time.
An extra cover also means your tent is totally waterproof and is warmer at night.
You can buy a groundsheet from Aldi, Homebase, B&Q etc. Put one under the tent to keep the base of the tent clean and dry, and one over it for good waterproofing and to use as a security cover. The one under the tent gets tucked in all the way round so water runs off the tent to the outside of it, not on it.
Tesco and Millets have tent pegs. Get good ones, not the cheap short ones.
Buy some for the tent as well. The supplied pegs are rarely any good even with expensive tents. Good pegs make a lot of difference to how well your tent puts up with the wind and rain. You need good strong anchors for the guy lines to keep the tent material taut, and then the tent will perform far better.
Dome tents are not easy to cover but it can be done, though not neatly.
Ridge tents and tunnel tents work far better for covering, and tunnel tents have the most room for the bulk and weight of the tent.
It's best to have at least a 4-person tent because they are built bigger and with more headroom. You will be much more comfortable than in a little 2-person tent.
Millets and Tesco both have decent 4-person tents on sale very cheaply....around £30 -40.
With a groundsheet for a cover they will be just as waterproof as a £300 tent.
Have a good time and remember the less stuff you have with you the less there is to worry about.
Enjoy the festival without worries....that's the good way to do it.
Have fun

How do I get out of capitalism? I'm serious.?

notsteve

I lived for six years in an income-sharing egalitarian commune and that wasn't bad, I didn't handle money for months at a time, and I didn't have to put up with any kind of boss lording over me all day. I had a lot of control over my own life and personal freedom on a day to day basis, much more than I do know working in corporate amerika. Only problem is it was basically only one of two large-scale secular communes in the country thats not some sort of crazy cult or has some hierarchical power structure with a charsmatic leader, etc and I decided I wanted to live in more than one place in my adult life. Since I don't see the proletariat taking over and establishing a classless society anytime soon, what is one to do? I don't feel much better off than a chattel slave right now. I hate hierarchy. Please don't tell me to move to Cuba ( I don't want Castro lording over me, either) or try to shove your bourgeois ideology down my throat either.
Thanks :) Twin Oaks is where I lived. It's a nice place.
Well glad I only have a year to wait then. Do you realize the person who used the term 'Big Brother' to describe a totalitarian system was a socialist who didn't like the Big Brother version of 'socialism' (like me)?

Answer
You don't have to leave America for this!!! There are little places where the proletariat have more power. One such place is Twin Oaks Commune in Virginia, google it. (OH WOW!!! I didn't see it was Twin Oaks you came From!) Nice place~

You may want to consider places like Iceland, Sweden, Denmark. Bjork grew up on an Icelandic commune. There is a nordic green allianc activist group that started in Reykjavik, Iceland. You may appreciate Sweden's 1970s communes. As Scandinavia is more elegant in its ways about design/creativity, so are their communes not quite the mess either. Look at the region of Sweden where the band
"The Hives" originated from. It was a very egalitarian place in Sweden.

Try lots of intentional communities.

Also come to Washington, DC on March 7th thru March 9th of this year and camp out on the campus of American University. You will really like something called NCOR. Google (NCOR, American University).

Finding the peace of being a proletariat is a state of mind more than it is a fixed place. It is vested in the quality of a few caring people, and it is about restarting life from scratch and the sacrifice is the hardship of making things yourself.

I know EXACTLY what you're feeling and you are ABSOLUTELY not alone! Escaping capitalism is finding a place where the noises of anti-capitalism drown out the otherwise capitalism.

I want to disappear for a while.. solo vacation for the soul?

I've been considering places to go. Reykjavik, Iceland.... New Zealand.... St.Johns, Newfoundland, Costa Rica... etc.

I'm trying to just get away from everything for a month, maybe two. I might even find a local job and take in the culture a bit. Obviously I speak English. I also speak a tiny bit of Spanish.

My goal is to get away from everything, explore, make new friends, do a little hiking, fishing.. all the fun stuff. I'm not much of a drinker and don't do drugs.

I'm 32 and no wife or kids but I know it's all going to come fairly soon and before it does I figure I have a small window left for something like this.

Like always, smart a$$ remarks and worthless answers are welcome but some actual advice might be helpful as well :)

Thanks all!

Answer
I know the feeling, sometimes you need a little *me time.*
Personally, I think New Zealand is a magical place to visit if you can get away from the main tourist spots.
Also, have you considered going to Australia and doing a Snowy Mountain Trail Ride.
You don't have to be experience in riding horses, they have all levels of pony's to suit.
They range from a few nights to a few weeks, they can supply you all your meals and camping accommodation while through the day, you will spend it riding over snowy mountain tops & crossing streams. You will see some amazing wildlife and each night sit around a camp fire & relax.
It's one to consider in your choices anyway.

Is there hot water in the cabins of Deer Valley YMCA camp in Penn?

Lori

I have seen mixed reviews about the camp.

Answer
hi there, they most certainly do..it"s an all year camp..

A Lodge has fireplace and activity rooms, and meals are served in a lakeside dining hall. Guests can stay in dorm-style bedrooms, with private bathrooms, in the Lodge, or in cottages and (heated) cabins with queen and bunk beds and bathrooms; cabins are near a washhouse with showers and washers and dryers.

Looking at buying a new tent? Help!!?

Megan S

Me and my college roommate need a new tent. We love to go camping over the summer maybe once or twice a month if not more. We are looking for a two room tent that will allow privacy since we usually travel with our boyfriends or other friends. We are looking for something large, but not awkwardly bulky.

We live in the mountains and almost everytime we go camping it rains, so thats another constant problem we have.

I'm looking at suggestions for a two room tent that is awesome with water leakage and will keep us warm in the fall and early spring months, but will keep us cool in the summer with good ventilation.

Now keep in mind we are in college so we are strapped on cash. We don't want anything over two hundred dollars unless its going to last a couple of years.

Don't forget, this is two girls buying a tent, so it needs to be somewhat easy to put up, and decent looking haha.

Answer
Hi Megan,

It's very cool you have a friend to go camping =) plus your boyfriend loves camping too

well, I highly recommend this tent coz it has best quality and will last for years..in addition it's easy to set up.

Eureka Titan Luxury Family 13.5-Foot by 9.5-Foot Eight-Person Two-Room Tent
Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Justin bieber concert help !?

Yumix

okay so tomorrow on november 23rd justin bieber is going to be at Rockefeller center so these are my questions
1 )what time is he going to be there
2 )what time are we suppose to be there
3 )do we need tickets to get in
4 )how long is he going to be there
5 ) is he going to preform in or out for free or what ?
any answer is helpful?

Answer
What time is Justin Bieber going to go to be at 'The Today Show'? Well Justin Bieber gets up kinda early and since he has to get ready for the concert and 'The Today Show' starts at 8:00 AM on live television I'm gonna guess and say he will be there sometime around 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM either or.

What time are the fans supposed to be there? There isn't a specific time you have to be there but if you want to see the entire performance and have great seats its good to get there early. This family of 4 has been standing out there 3 days before Justin Bieber is supposed to stay there. The Today Show has been talking about them since the day they got there. I know some girl that met Justin Bieber outside of 'The Today Show' November 4, 2011 and she waited since 2:00 AM in the morning until Justin Bieber's interview started which was at 8:00 AM. If you show up at 4:00 AM I'm sure you would still be very far away, there most likely will be people camping out (there were fans that were camping out to meet Justin Bieber in Macy's for Justin's fragrance line) so you should camp out if you really want to see Justin Bieber up close and if you get tired or you want to sit down you could always go back to the tent. There are fans that would do anything to see Justin whether their meeting him or their just seeing him live. Justin Bieber is extremely popular and he seems to be getting more and more popular everyday so it most likely will be very crowded

Do we need tickets to get in? No its free just like how whenever the fans in New York City know that Justin Bieber is gonna do an interview with 'The Today Show' and sign autographs they show up extremely early and get there for free because they know since its New York City there will be many people that will show up but if you want to make sure just in case you should call 'The Today Show'.

How long is Justin Bieber going to be there? Its probably going to be like any regular concert of his when he performs and sings his whole album. At Justin Bieber concerts they usually start at 7:00 PM here in America but he doesn't come out until 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM because of the opening acts and the concert ends at 10:00 PM. I don't think that Justin Bieber is going to have opening acts while performing outside of 'The Today Show' but I do think that since he does perform 1-2 hours singing his whole album I think that's the way it will be on 'The Today Show'. I don't think that their going to record Justin Bieber singing all of his songs on T.V at The 'Today Show' though.

Is Justin Bieber going to perform indoors or outdoors? Justin Bieber will be performing outside. If there is bad weather there will be a tent so that he or his fans don't get really wet. There wouldn't be enough room for Justin Bieber to perform inside for his fans and the inside would cover the whole inside of 'The Today Show' when they can't do that because they have to do news there and other stuff lol.

Be prepared for rain and for it to be really windy. Make sure to wear warm clothing. Good luck :)

Holiday in America. just a few questions?

Hello,
next year im going on a holiday to america with my family. i have never been over seas and im very excited. i really want to go to new york but mum says we are sticking to the other side of the US. so we are going to places like Las Vegas, LA, San Francisco, Hollywood, Yosemite National Park.
we will go to places like the grand canyon, the big red bridge in san francisco, universal studios, the place in hollywood where the stars are in the floor, disneyland. and places like that.
is there anything you suggest that we do in thoes areas. oh and we plan on going for 2-3 weeks and the start of June 2011.
and also id like to get something from everywhere, for example a post card or keyring from all the places i go. is there anything you suggest that i get as a way to remember where i was.

Answer
Congratulations on your trip! Being a born and bred California girl, I think your mum made a good choice about where to visit. That being said, the previous answer about our weather couldn't be more incorrect. There are plenty of places in California that are cold, wet & rainy (San Francisco, for example, is almost always cold!).

My main suggestion is this: try to find time in each place you go to experience "every day" life; don't stick just to tourist destinations. This is what makes someone a traveller rather than a tourist. For example, in Los Angeles, go to the Farmer's Market downtown or the one in Santa Monica. In San Francisco, wander around Chinatown, see the Ferry Building, and take a boat ride across the bay to Marin County (the Golden Gate Bridge connects SF with Marin County). This will give you a taste of what it's like to live here.

How about this as an idea for a souvenier: most tourist shops sell sterling silver charms to put on charm bracelets. They are usually not more than $15 each, and you can collect one from each area you visit. When you get home, you can ask for a silver charm bracelet for your birthday or other holiday, and have all the charms placed on it by a jeweler. This way, you have a lovely piece of jewelry that you can continue to add to throughout your entire life, and it will be more meaningful than a postcard or a cheap plastic key ring.

Here are my specific recommendations:

Do try to have at least two days at the Disney Resorts, or you will be missing a lot. For advice on all things Disney, go to www.mouseplanet.com

You may want to visit Napa County (wine country north of San Francisco) - for a different experience, stay in Calistoga, a lovely little town where there are hot springs resorts (I like to stay at either Indian Springs or Calistoga Spa Hot Springs).

For Yosemite, you'll need to make reservations now (yes, I mean NOW!). It may be fun to stay in a tent cabin at Camp Curry, or for a fancier experience, the Ahwanee or the Wawona. This park is not to be missed.

Have you considered a drive between Los Angeles and San Francisco? There are some charming beach towns along the way (like Santa Cruz, Carmel, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara) if you take Highway 1, and you can stop at Hearst Castle, which is really stunning.

Have a wonderful time!

Road trip, places to go? and what about cost?

|x

Me and some friends are planning a road trip this summer for about a week, were starting in San Diego and heading upstate to yosemite and back. Any cool places to go around there or on the way? we may want to back track around through nevada and down to the grand canyon. when would be the best time to go as well knowing gas prices will change. how much should we expect to pay for this? we'd be tent camping rather than hotels each night, possibly up to 10 people in 2 cars. also any good tips in general? ive gone on road trips in an RV before, but not car camping

Answer
If it is only 10 people going maybe you could get a mini van? that may be cheaper to pay for a rental mini van everyday then driving with 2 cars as far as gas. . . .it would be really hard to find out the exact cost as gas prices are never steady, but this summer would be a great time to go on a trip because gas is generally lower and now with that bush out of the office, gas prices have steadily been going down. And im sure will get around only 190 or so a gallon hopefully very soon!

Make sure have a us road atlas with you, dont rely on other peoples directions. Before a long trip make sure you have all the safety stuff etc, also because you are camping. It would be very very smart to plan ahead and know where you are camping each night.

I go to yahoo driving directions and just print the driving directions and keep them in my atlas,. The grand canyon is definately worth the drive, I hope to go back soon again myself, but that is a far way from your initial destination, this trip even though you will be staying in tents and not hotels, will set you back at least 800 bucks even more with food and gas, and personal items.

The more you plan the more you will be able to expect in cost. If you gave me alil more info i could be a lot more precise. . .

As far as some cool places to stop, I love wine country, lived there for many years, like santa rosa. There is alot of good food and great weather there. Its always nice to drive along the coast and stop at the beach whenever you feel like it.. . Maybe if you decide not to go to the grand canyon, you could take the coastal way back towards home. . .its always an awesome drive. . . i lived many years growing up in California, Santa rosa and Grass valley, CA.. .. and now i live in Oregon and i must say The oregon coast is soooo nice. . .i enclosed a few pics, the waves are aesome, the water can get dangerous, but its absoloutley beautifull but i know thats a ways out of your way, but the coast here is amazing. . . Id say if you took around 8-10 people, i would have each of you guys save up about 100 a peice just to be on the safe side!

I hope you have a great trip!

What are good places to camp near Los Angeles?

heyseuss

I'm looking to go tent camping within 3 hours drive of LA, I want to car camp, I don't have reservations and it's a holiday weekend, and I'd like to be near trees (as opposed to beach). Best would be any national forest or similar area where I have a lot of options to camp without a lot of commercial traffic, RV's, etc. or a place you need reservations. Maybe Big Bear or Idlewild?

Answer
If you don't have reservations, you are probably completely out of luck. Check the National Parks Website, to see if there are any open spots; I would be surprised if there are. There are some KOA campgrounds off of I-10 out towards Palm Springs, but those may be full as well.

You might want to try Ventura County; the areas around Ojai and Santa Maria are really picturesque, and do not get the traffic that Idlewild, Arrowhead, and Big Bear get. Ojai is about an hour's drive out of LA, so it's not too far.

Places of interest from Amsterdam to Munich?

josietheni

I'm driving from Amsterdam to Munich, and wanting to spread the journey out a wee bit. Can anyone recommend any places of interest along the way, nice towns, pretty countryside, etc?

Cheers

Answer
I was in Munich a couple of years back and I loved it. You definitely have to check out Crazy King Ludwig's castles because one of them was the inspiration for the "Sleeping Beauty" castle. The Hofbrauhaus is a very famous beer hall in Munich that should be interesting. You might also want to check out Dachau concentration camp.

how to get my grandparents to let me go to summer camp please respond ASAP?

KK

I live in WI and next summer when I am 14 I want to go to IGC ( international gymnastics camp ) for 2 weeks which is in PA I know it is dangerous to travel alone but I will still be young enough to fly unaccompanied minor and they will be able to walk me to my gate and wait with me until I board ahead of the rest of the passengers and disembark the plane before anybody else to when I leave the plane I will be met by a Representative from the camp who will show papers to the flight attendant to prove that I am not being abducted by him then we will go to baggage to pick up my bag then we drive to camp in the camp van and when it is time for me to go home they will drive me to the airport to meet my plane and my grandparents can meet me by the gate to pick me up I am also saving up money to go to this camp to help pay for it I am very responsible and want the opportunity to go to this camp very badly I feel that at this age I should be able to go to the camp if proper precautions are taken I have also done alot of Research to find this all out and I also travel alot so I know how to handle myself I am a great student and have been on the honor role for two years and I am on student council please help to prove that I should be allowed to go to this camp

Answer
KK,

I think it's a wonderful idea for you to go away to camp! My daughter went away to camp from the time she was about 8 or so. It's a wonderful experience and besides honing your gymnastic skills, you'll make new friends and memories that last a lifetime.

It sounds like your pretty good at research. Get some facts on the camp. Like how long they've been in business, their ratings, safety guidelines and medical staff, and make sure they're accredited, etc. Maybe that will help sway them.

Or is it a financial issue? If that's the case, then you have time to begin the "campership" process. Most, if not all, camps offer them in some form. It may be income based tho, depends on the camp I think.

At 14 my daughter was also a stellar student and was asked to participate in a summer exchange program. She went to London, Paris, Cologne, Brussels, and Amsterdam. It made her who she is today. She has gone on to earn 2 almost 3 degrees - an AA in Child Psychology, a BA in Elementary Education and she's 2 classes shy of her BA in Child Psych, all while having/raising 4 and now maybe 6 (she may be having twins!) children.

I truly believe it is very important for kids your age to get out into the world and learn how to be self sufficient. It is crucial to development and summer camp is a safe place to learn these valuable skills. Imagine going away to college w/o ever having had to rely on yourself before!

From your post, it sounds like the camp has kids from other states quite often. They have plans in place for this. It's also quite probable that you wont be the only one they pick up at the airport that day!

And if all that doesn't work, try reminding them that the time you are away at camp is a great time for them to do the things that they've been wanting to do. Whether it's travel or simply stay at home and enjoy the peace and quiet! :-)

I too was raised by my Grandparents, and it can be difficult as a kid. They kinda forget that times have changed and it's not the same as when they were kids. I have Grandkids your age, and if they wanted to go to gymnastic camp in another state, I'd have no problem with it. As a matter of fact my 10yr old grandson is going to football camp in Maryland for a week at the end of this month! (We're in PA!)

Good Luck, and feel free to let your Grandparents check out my response.
