wild camping in Australia?

Dimi

Me and my friends want to do a holiday together next summer holidays, and were thinking of going camping in australia. Not the crappy camping in campsites with takeout food, but proper 'massive bagpacks and tents, hiking and sleeping in the wild' kind of camping. i know in the summer it would be winter there so how cold would it get? also is campig and hiking in the wild actualy allowed or is it dangerous and not recommended. Also if anyone esle has any good alternate places to go hiking/camping that are good, please do tell me. Thanks :)

Answer
Camping in the wild is perfectly OK in Australia, but there are a few things you should know first.

Number one, some areas (such as national parks) require you to apply for a permit to camp there. See this website for more information, it also lists some other regulations (such as those relating to camp fires and wood gathering).

http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks_and_forests/activities_in_parks_and_forests/camping/index.html

Second, many area's around Australia are very dry and so fires are banned. Check whether a fire ban is in force in the area if your planning to be using open fires for cooking. You' also have to bring your own wood since collecting it in the bush is prohibited.

In regards to the cold, it varies depending on how far south and how far west you go. See this page and compare it to a map for a breakdown of the temperatures state by state.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Australia

As for dangers, there are a few dangerous animals , mostly poisonous reptiles. You can avoid these by wearing thick leather shoes which they cant bite through if you should happen to stand on one. As long as you do that, keep and eye out and dont stick your hand were you cant see, you should be right.

Another main danger is crocodiles around waterways.Dont swim in water you cant see into and take extra care when collecting water. Since we dont have any large mammalian predators (such as bears or large wild cats) you dont have to worry about them, though packs of dingo's (wild dogs) have been known to raid campsites. Over all though, the biggest killers are wildfires, storms and intense heat.

camping spots south australia?

Q. any south australians no any good camping grounds for 5 teenage boys, just to have fun, particulary isolated so we dont disturb others

Answer
I will suggest the Flinders Ranges as the lass above has also recommended...
If you do choose the Flinders get some history about the place as it is fascinating, I know as I live on the southern edge of the Flinders...
Did you know that the Flinders Ranges are among the oldest rock formations in the world ; actually they are the oldest in the world, older than Greenland and Iceland...
When I was exploring around Blinman about 40 years ago I found a rock with some very early sea life on it, this is single cell life forms, very ancient, very basic...
I took the rock to school back in about 1970 and left it with my science teacher, that's the last time I saw it...
Have a nice holiday no matter where you choose to go, and as the lass mentioned above Kangaroo Island is also a nice spot, except the locals hate tourists, even though they need them for their economy..

Are there any good camping places near or in Ocean Shores Washington?

jojo_101_0

Don't have a whole lot to spend but can't seem to find anything. Anyone know of any nice camping places near or on the beach where we can have small camp fires? (Ocean shores Washington)

Answer
Here are some private campgrounds:

http://www.tourismoceanshores.com/PageID/30/Type/5/default.aspx

Up and down HWY 101 there are other small campgrounds, especially when you get to Olympic National Park.

I know a lot of the land is Tribal or private, but believe there are some unimproved camp spots near the beachs. Sorry I can't be more help, its been a while since I was over there.

camping NSW/QLD?

Q. i'm about to take a week or so and drive north from sydney with a mate and see what we come across. Does anybody have any suggestions about places to stay? campsites? will it be too cold to camp? any suggestion son things to see and do? we will probably end up just north of Surfer's as I have friends there.

any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

M

Answer
if you intend camping "in the hills" yes it will be cold at night - bring a very warm sleeping bag, gloves & beanie,
you can camp at Binna Burra or O'Reilly's if you like bushwalking - goes down to about 0c at night.
tonight it's 6c in coastal areas.
for camping try the caravan parks - many of them have campsites.

What tent should I buy?

MamaB

Looking to buy a tent. In addition to myself and my husband we have two boys, ages 5 and 7, and a baby girl, age 15 months. I know I want a big "family" tent, with a screen porch. I have narrowed it down to 3, after researching on line. The price difference is big. One is only $150.00 and one is almost $400.00. Are certain brands better than others? What features should I look for? Thanks!

Answer
http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___21597
Coleman WeatherMaster 6 w/Screenroom - 17x9 - 6 Person Tent
$239.99
The Coleman 1 Room WeatherMaster 6 with attached Screenroom tent can sleep up to 6 campers. The tent is easy to set up and with a large sleeping room for your gear and a generous screenroom for the ultimate in relaxing times this could be the tent your family is looking for. A combination of steel and fiberglass poles provide a very secure and stable frame for the latest and greatest version of the famed WeatherMaster series of tents. The waterproof instructions are sewn to the bag for your convenience. The big wide hinged door is so simple and easy to use that it's almost like being at home. Great ventilation is provided by 5 windows and a mesh ceiling. The rugged poly floor will never let you down and the taped fly seams will keep water outside where it belongs. The screenroom offers a nice place for the kids to play or a great place to relax after the kids have gone to bed. This is a another great tent from Coleman for the whole family for either a short or extended trip.

Hi Gear Corado 8 Tent Question?

Flower84

Hi we're looking to buy a large family tent with a good living area, with plenty of full height area. We really like the Hi Gear Corado 8 tent. Its perfect for us in all areas except one. We really like to have a porch area that is seperate from the internal carpeted living area. Ideally one with a ground sheet and a front that can be fully closed up or opened right up - its a good place for kitchen stuff and our dog to sleep :)
As far as i'm aware there isn't any Hi Gear add on you can get for the Corado 8 (please correct me if there is), but does anyone know of anything that would fit with the Corado 8 that may be another brand??
Thanks a lot

Answer
It appears that Hi-Gear is a UK brand. I've never encountered one, so I can't comment on its quality. Coleman, Eureka and Wenzel make 6- or 8-person tents, (Eureka even has a 12-person 3-room behemoth they call the "Condo"), with an attached screen room with floor, divider and closable window flaps, ranging in price from $150 (Wenzel) to over $800 (Eureka Condo). I didn't check to see if they were all available in the UK, but I'd be surprised if they are not. However, with the favorable (from your perspective) exchange rates, it might be worthwhile to buy from US-based reseller and pay for shipping, duties and VAT, and still save money.

Two comments about this type of tent. Reviewers almost universally agree that it takes two adults to set one up, so consider that before buying.

Also, an attached screen room might be nice for lounging, reading or playing games out of the reach of mosquitoes, but I would recommend _not_ eating in one, and certainly _NOT_ cooking in one. Insects and animals are attracted to the smell of food, and even if you clean carefully you will likely leave some crumbs behind. And fire inside tents is a very bad idea.

My suggestion is to look at a nice size tent, something you can sit around in if necessary when it rains, and get a separate screen room or easy-up canopy with screen walls to use as your kitchen/dining area. Setup the kitchen/dining area at least 25 feet from your tent.

need the recipe of a food i ate in south korea?

yshef

i was deployed to south korea for a year they had the best dam food i have ever tasted. the camp is called camp casey in the Tongduchon area there was a all you can eat buffet there.directions to the buffet leave casey from the front gate cross the street to the train station take a left walking side to side of the train station walk like 5 blocks then take a right go under the trail rails walk a block and you will see a buffet there. they had great food. my friends called it beaf and leaf.
the food there had three meats cow pig and chicken you sat in a small table with a fire grill in the middle put the meat in the grill then eat it. for me it was the most delicious food i ever taste in my life. the taste was a little sour the sauce used made the meat red before cooking. got a letuce leaf some rice and the meat made a taco like food.
need to know the recipe to that food i ate that day it driving me nuts. also want to know the names of the side dishes that come with korean food like kimchi. the pickled potatoes cucumbers and all that. I want to make them eat them and enjoy them at my home with my family. last thing it was 3 years ago i dont know if its still there.

thanks to all people that help me with this problem
i see no wonder it was similar to bulgogi i already made that but never added hot pepper paste what other ingredients can go with the marinade. i saw honey, sugar, cooking wine dark and light soy sauce, pineapple or pear juice. any more that can mix? about those side dishes the main course will not be complete without them.

Answer
it's called korean bbq. you can pretty much find it anywhere with the help of google. i'm not exactly sure which meat you ate because there are TONS of meat you can bbq at a korean bbq place. they basically use sesame oil, soy sauce, ginger and garlic. they'll add hot pepper paste if the marinade is spicy. the taste of each marinate will vary from restaurant to restaurant but you'll never know what their secret ingredient is.

Best Vacation you have taken?

J's Mommy

Moms, where have you taken your kids to on vacation, a day trip or even a weekend?
I have an 18 month old and I am trying to figure out places to take him to see the world!
We took him to SeaWorld Orlando Florida when he was 9 months old and he loved it! We also just went on a cruise last month, and he also had a blast!
I planb on taking him to Sesame Place, and possibly camping. Oh and also Dutch WOnderland.......anything else?
lisas mommy- when we went on the cruise we spent the day at the atlantis...i loved it!

Answer
This summer we went with a family group to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN. My Mom and other relatives and friends went too so that made it so much easier for me with my 19 month old son. We rented a cabin and the rental agency had a community pool and putt putt golf on site, which were free. We went to Cade's Cove and several other area attractions and had one of our best trips there in a long time. I think the best part about it was having my Mom and family there to help with my little one, giving me some free time. And he loved it too!

Sorry about that... I live in southeast Texas.

Answer
First, you did not say where you are from. That and what your interests are would help answerers find you ideas.
Camping is great if y'all are the outdoor type and already have camping equipment and you and your husband have experience in camping. We tried it once (also a family of 4), little experience , not the outdoor kind of people and it was disastrous! A storm came on the first night we were on a mountain area. We did not waterproof our tent correctly and it leaked at various places. We were soaked , tempers flew and a wild bird or something made a sound just outside our tent and scared us to death! Looking back it is kinda comical now. But not at that time. We vowed never to go camping again!
Beaches are great and depending on which coast you are closer to (assuming you are in the USA), it might be great fun because I know a lot of folks like beaches and it costs next to nothing if you can drive there or fly short distance. Some beaches, like Daytona in Florida, costs a little to get to the beach to park your car but it is well worth it if you go early in the morning and can get a good spot. You will be spending many hours there so it is worth it to pay.
Amusement Parks are fun for Kids, like Disneyland or Disneyworld or many others but your key word "affordable" makes me think it might be too much (?) If you go in the Summer, you will probably get thirsty a lot and you count the costs (even if you can get a package deal) calculate the spending money you will need. A bottle of just water costs around $2 or so. In Summer. How about lunch? dinner? Children so young would want to take home a toy souvenir.
If you are near some Science museums with hands -on activities, it might be great fun. Or Aquarium. It would not cost as much as those amusement parks with rides.Hope this helps.

Best places in Brisbane?

Pip

My husband and I (we're in our thirties) are planning a trip to Brisbane to suss out if we'd like to live there. What things/places MUST we see in and around Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast? (Venturing approx 100km radius of Brisbane.)
Thanks if you can help :)

Answer
Brisbane
The City Cats (ferry) on the Brisbane River are a pleasant way of getting around and will get you around to a few places. Also pleasant at night especially in warmer weather.

There are a number of parks / open spaces in or near the CBD and several not far out. Roma Street Parklands is a pleasant walk. There are two Botanical Gardens â one in the city and one at Mt Coot-tha (about 20 minutes by bus). The Planetarium can also be found at the later. New Farm Park provides a lovely place for a picnic and the kids to run around. Further out try the Boondall Wetlands especially if you like bird watching. Above Mt Coot-tha is a lookout.

Southbank Parklands has open space, childrenâs playgrounds, BBQ areas, a beach, restaurants and cafes, shops and is surrounded by the Maritime Museum, the Cultural Centre (which encompasses the Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum, Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art and State Library).

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary allows you to meet Australian animals in a controlled environment â they specialise in Koalaâs obviously.

Newstead House is the oldest house in existence in Brisbane and is supposedly haunted.

Moreton Bay
There are a number of Islands and bay cruises.

Stradbroke, Moreton and others offer overnight and longer stays from camping to resort accomodation.

St Helena Island was once a convict settlement for the worst of the worst. Day and night tours are available.

Gold Coast (~1 hour south of Brisbane)

There are numerous beaches. Surfers Paradise is the âfamousâ beach. However it is also the most touristy and it is probably best to go further south (Burleigh comes to mind but there are others)
There are several fun parks including Dream World, Sea World, Movie World and Wet âN Wild.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has a large variety of Australian animals and is best known for the wild rainbow lorikeets that come in to feed in the morning and afternoon.

There are other attractions including the viewing platform on the Q1 building, Infinity, a wax museum, putt putt golf, thrill rides are also available.

Behind the Gold Coast is the Lamington National Park and you can stay at Binna Burra or OâReillyâs. There is also The Natural Arch and Mt Tamborine.

Sunshine Coast (~1 hour north of Brisbane)

Has plenty of beaches and natural areas including the Glass House Mountains and Noosa Nationals Park.

Underwater World and Australia Zoo are the wildlife places.

Darling Downs

Toowoomba is the heart of farming for South East Queensland. They have a gardening festival each year around September. Jondaryan Woolshed has a historical display (and festival around August) with displays on farming and shearing from days gone by.

Family camping tent help?

What is the best family camping tent with small boys - 4, 6 and 9yrs, a gunho dad -6' 6", tons of clothes - because we need to be ready for all weather conditions, 1 frazzled mother... ? With a queen sized air matress, 2 single air matresses, and a cot. A borrowed gazebo thingy, and no stove yet...

Answer
Get information on products and buy the best you can afford, if you take proper care of a well made article it will last a long time without failure. Just be aware that many camping products are just conveniences and not essentials.

Look to anything that goes into your camping cargo as a potential menace; you will discover how easy is to be overloaded so keep it simple.

There are many good tents for families in the market (I personally like the Kelty brand, even if not bought one for a log time).

If you are planning for a base-camp and not hiking-camping I would say that military cots are another possible option for the sleeping quarters.

Include a basic survivor & medic kit for emergencies. (There are many posts already in the forum about tents, safety, and tips).

What are the better quality family camping tents?

TCMJim

We would like to purchase a camping tent for the family. I am not too keen on dome tents as I am 6' tall and do not want to crawl around inside the tent. There are three of us but a fourth, mother in-law, may join us from time to time. We are not hard core backpackers so will be mostly staying in campsites for now. I want something easy to assemble. We are on somewhat of a budget so nothing over $500. However, we do not want to buy a cheap piece of junk either. Your help would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Big Agnes, Marmot, Kelty, Sierra Designs and Eureka are great brands that make excellent family tents for under $500. You can do so much better with that kind of money than a Coleman. Coleman is OK if you have a smaller budget, but if you can afford quality by having aluminum poles, better material and water proofing, vestibules, and all that, go for it. You'll have it a long time as long as it is cared for and stored properly.

Can you correct my English please?

Lo

Hi,

1) "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats" is a fascinating book published in October 2007 in "Speakeasy Magazine" where two photographers, Peter Menzel and his wife "Faith dâAluisio", take us on a culinary world tour (France, USA, Egypt, Greenland, Japan, Bosnia and Chad including ) for visiting thirty families for capturing what they eat during the course of one week. In this way, each familyâs is taken alongside their weekly groceries.

2) On the picture 1, we see the Aboubakar family sitting on carpet in front of their tent. The family is made up of one mother and his children, probably aged of 2 and 18 years-old. At the front, we see, on carpet, their weekly groceries. We note they are rather poor. In effect, they are in one Breidjing Refugee Camp. We remark they will feed notably of Grains, Other Starchy Foods, Fruits, Vegetables & Nuts, and drink water exclusively.

â On the photograph 2, they show the Revis family in the kitchen of their home in Raleigh. She is made up of one boy who holds a pizza. Too, we see her parents behind to him. They have the smile. Nearby of the Revis family, there is a lot of food and drink's mark on the table. These people aren't in need.

Thanks

Answer
1) The last bit of the sentence should read:

"...each family is taken alongside their weekly groceries".

You had written "family's" that is not right.

2) My suggestion: if you have a picture of the family just label it as "This is the Aboubakar family."
Don't describe what they doing in the picture as obviously the reader will be able to see it themselves.

"The family is made up of a single mum with her two children, their age is probably 2 and 18 years."
"We note that they must be of low income family."

Suggestion instead of writing this sentence: We remark they will feed notably of Grains, Other Starchy Foods, Fruits, Vegetables & Nuts, and drink water exclusively.
Write instead:
"Their nutrition mostly likely consists of grains, starchy foods, fruits, vegetable and nuts".

Picture 2:
Suggestion: Remove this sentences: She is made up of one boy who holds a pizza. Too, we see her parents behind to him. They have the smile. Nearby of the Revis family, there is a lot of food and drink's mark on the table. These people aren't in need.

Instead write:

The family consists of a boy and his parents. They seem like a middle class family with foods (pizza) and drinks as part of their normal diet.

Suggestion: again do not discribe the picture as the reader will be able to see for themselves.

Hi! So its summer and I wanted to go to camping with my family.
I have gone camping once with my friend and they did all the reservation and everything.. so I have no clue what to do(I wil be going alone with my family).
I am looking for a camping place where they have this requirement
-Must have lot of activity to do
-Must have a good fishing place (lot of fishes)
-Must have a shade (lot of trees)
-Not too far from Los Angles (1~2 hour drive?)
-Also it have to be a place where I can make reservation now and go there within 2 weeks

Thanks!
Explanation of how that place is good and what activity to do will be good..
and I am looking for specific camping place with link to its site for reservation..

Answer
Good luck on the reservation thing most of what you described is booked solid through summer. here is the reservation info link
http://www.reserveamerica.com/

Type in what city is near you and the dates you want and then any available sites will come up.

Now there are a lot of first come sites all around you just have to look up the national forests around you and see what again is in your category. If you leave by thursday you should be able to find a spot for the weekend at most of these. A favorite or 2 of mine that's close to what you describe are South fork on the Santa ana river near barton flats and Apple-white on lytle creek.

Good California camping place for fall?

Katie

My friends and I are looking to go on one last camping trip before the end of the year, and we plan to go soon! Where would be the best spot(s) in Cali to do so? We live is Southern-ish California and it'd be cool to see some waterfalls, go hiking, see big cool rocks and all the fall colors on trees. So, what's the best FALL place to camp here?

Answer
I had all sorts of ideas until you said "fall colors." We don't exactly have native trees in CA that lend themselves toward the vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows like other places in the country. But...

If you camp in the upper foothills of Sequoia national park, sort of where the oak trees, sumac, and pine trees merge, it can get that "fall feeling" like you get in Maine or Michigan. Some of the "shrub-ish" type of plants turn color. Heck, even the poison oak looks brilliantly red in the fall (leaves of three, leave them be).

If you take Hwy. 99 to Visalia, then take Hwy. 198 east and follow it up through Three Rivers into the National Park (need a park pass), there are some foothill camping spots in this area that are pretty in the fall. For a day trip you can drive up higher and see the Giant Sequoia trees which are always a wonderful, no matter what time of year.

There are a couple of campgrounds here... Potwisha campground and Hospital Rock campground. From either of these campgrounds which are in the lower "oak tree" elevations where you might see colors, there are plenty of "day hikes" both out of the campgrounds or a short drive up to the Giant Forrest grove of Sequoias. Out of Potwisha, if you hike south out of the campground, over the road, there is a neat trail that leads up to an old but functional aqueduct.

Here are some of the other "things to see" that are all day trip capable in the area.

General Grant Tree (largest tree/living thing in the world)
Giant Forrest (large grove of Sequoia trees)
Moro Rock
Crystal Caves (tickets at park entrance only)
All the hiking trails you could ever want, espeically out of Lodgepole.

Can anyone give me a equipment list for 3 days camping?

Bridget

Answer
hi
my family and i camp quite often we are a group of 6 and this is what we bring

tent
blankets
pillows
clothes

towels
shower stuff (shampoo soap wash cloth toothbrush and paste)
toilet paper
its best to put that stuff in its own small bag to easily carry to the bathroom

coolers we bring a few one for meat, one for drinks and ice, the other for things like ketchup mustard lunch meat
food you do not want to buy when you get there
paper plates
plastic silverware
trashbags
paper towels
camping stove
a pot
a pan
anything you want to season your food with
we have a flat skillet (fabulous you can cook almost anything on it $20.00 at walmart)
spatula
stirring spoon
CAN OPENER (we forgot this the first time we went)
if you will be cooking over the fire s grate from the grill
or small portable grill ($10.00 at walmart)
dish soap
sponge
if you pack these things in a plastic tub you can wash your dishes in it after you eat

flashlights
extra batteries
extension cord
small fan (incase it gets to hot)
small heater (incase it gets to cold)
2 strands of x-mas lights where we camp there is a picninc table with a roof and we put the x-mas lights up so at night we have an even amount of light at the table (also fabulous)
hammer and nails (just a few to hang up things on a tree or picnic table ike the x-mas lights bags with snacks or bread)

deck of cards
maybe a board game if you like to play them
chairs to sit on one for each person
we bring glow sticks for the kids
portable dvd player
dvd's
if you are bringing kids try some finger paints playdough or coloring books to keep them busy
and if you are going to have a fire get some fire wood from the store or a chainsaw (incase the only wood you find is large and needs to be cut)

other important thigs are handsanitzer and depending on the place you are camping maybe some 409 or clorox (the bathrooms are sometimes yucky)
bugf spray and sun block

i know it looks like alot but when you get it packed it really is not the much and we use all of it and have a blast each time we camp
if you are primitive camping then perhaps you will not need half of this but some of the comforts of home are nice we really enjoy being out and away from things like the T.V and work and some of the animals you see are amazing

i hope you have fun

Large Family Tent Under $180.00?

Erik

I need a big family cabin tent that cost under $180.00. It needs to sleep at least 6 people.

Answer
The best time to buy is now. The season is coming to an end for dealers selling camping tents, so big discounts are occurring at the walmarts, targets, etc.. You can also bet that the sporting goods stores like sports authority, REI, Big 5 are doing the same. $180. should get you a very nice even high end quality tent right now

good luck!

Camping/Fishing/Hiking/Wildlife viewing near Chicago?

Snicklefri

I live in Chicago and this summer I would like to go camping, along with hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, maybe even swimming (Lake Michigan). Is there anywhere less than 2 hours away that you would recommend? (Southern Michigan, Western Indiana, etc)

Answer
Unfortunately there really isn't anything less than two hours away I would recommend. As much as I love the city of Chicago, it is one of the weaker states for outdoor opportunities.

However, there are a couple neat places within a two hour drive. One of them is the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore just over the Indiana border from Chicago. This is a quite scenic area that borders Lake Michigan.

The other recommendation I have is Devils Rock State Park in Wisconsin, northeast of Chicago. This park actually offers some vertical relief with a beautiful lake setting.

I consider those the two best areas within a two hour drive of the city. To get to some real "country" you will need to drive a minimum of five hours from Chicago to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin. This is the wildest public lands area that is the cloest to Chicago. If you go a little further north you will encoutner the Ottawa National Forest in Michigan which is one step up wilder from that. In the Ottawa National Forest you will find the Sylvania Wilderness (a watery, lake filled canoeing paradise), the Sturgeon Gorge Wilderness and the McCormick Wilderness. These are some truly wild places. Finally, by driving about 7 hours to Lake Superior , you will encounter the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park which is around 50,000 acres with 40,000 acres of wilderness. It containes beaches, waterfalls, cliffs, old growth forests, and great hiking trails. This is the largest wilderness area in the midwest outside of Isle Royale National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

great places to camp near toronto, ON?

kailapants

anyone know any good places to go camping near toronto?
preferably somehwere an hour or two away from the city, with beach/water access?
we've checked sandbanks and a few other places and they're all booked up already.

does anyone know any good places to camp where we won't get too much flack for being loud? (we are a bunch of 18-22 yr olds)
thanks :)
umm... i don't live in utah. i live in toronto. i want to camp near TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA. thank you.

Answer
This is the link to check out out two campgrounds run by Toronto and Region Conservation.
http://www.trcacamping.ca/

You can also check KOA Kampgrounds. The ones near Toronto seem to be Toronto West, Toronto North/Cookstown and possibly Niagara Falls.
http://www.koa.com/where/on/

And one more, north of Toronto:
http://www.jellystonetoronto.com/index.html

Campgrounds are generally family areas so you'll probably have problems with flack anywhere you go. Also, campgrounds book up fast so you may find you can't get a reservation anywhere.

Is there any good camping near Toronto?

anita

I just moved to Toronto and i wanted to set up a camping trip, i don't want to have to drive more then 2 hours from Toronto and i wanted to rent a cabin anyone have suggestions for a place that's decently priced (we're only going to be there for a few days ) It can be in a camp ground I do have a 3 year old so if its family oriented that would be lovely!

Answer
thankfully, toronto is next to a whole lot of great outdoors and has memorable camping places. Now, if you could drive about 3 or 4 hours, then i'd say that you should definitely check out algonquin provincial park. But i understand that you can only drive only 2 hours and with a 3 year old with you, it really can be hard to travel to far places. Try getting a cabin near orillia which is a city about 1 and and a half north or toronto or barrie which is only 1 hour away. The region around lake simcoe is great for fishing and its scenery and also it is a great place for families to visit. Here it is on a map:

http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS464US464&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=667&q=lake+simcoe&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89d54d596d4922a3:0xc090fa1a7636063f,Lake+Simcoe&gl=ca&ei=dbyMT_L-IYLi0QGl-M2zCQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CDMQ8gEwAA

The kawartha lakes is also a nice place to find a cabin for rent. The lakes are very calm and nice. The region is shown here
http://maps.google.ca/maps?rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS464US464&q=kawartha+lakes&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89d57bdfc9344d85:0x22cdaf2b7cc6aaef,Kawartha+Lakes,+ON&gl=ca&ei=mLuMT5b_MePV0QHk3vnSCQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=4&ved=0CFwQ8gEwAw

You should also ask some neighbors and friend ansd they can tell you about some other places too.

Intensive French Summer Camp?

Eliza

I'm trying to find an intensive French language camp/camp in French (in France) for teenagers over the summer...the only problem is, I'd like the whole program to be in French. I found http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/academie-de-france/ but it's so expensive and I want to see if there's anything more affordable.

Merci mille fois :)

Answer
There are summer camps in France called "colonies de vacances" but they are for the children of residents in France.and they do not offer language tuition but simply summer activities.
Obviously there also are summer schools for foreigners in many places and these offer all sorts of activities to their participants, but you are bound to find that there are other English speaking students taking part though the language spoken by tutors and monitors will be French.

If you Google' French summer courses for adolescents in France', you are bound to find many others.

What was the Union prisoner of war camp that was as bad as andersonville?

bigjohnson

I am interested in this fact.

Answer
There were many such camps and all were terrible. Elmira is the one you are thinking of as it was consider similar to Andersonville. Following is a list of such camps and prisons for both sides.

Belle Isle Prison (CSA)
Beautiful Belle Isle, in the James River at Richmond, became a Confederate prison after 1st Bull Run, confining Union noncommissioned officers and enlisted men.
Blackshear Prison (CSA)
Read about how 5000 Union prisoners were placed in facility intented to house only a few hundred men.
Camp Chase (USA)
Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, located at 2900 Sullivant Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, encloses within its less than two acres the mortal remains of 2,087 Confederate soldiers.
Camp Douglas (USA)
Originally designed as a training station, this facility was converted to a POW camp in 1862. It was designed with a capacity for 6000 men, but during its most crowded they managed to cram in over 12,000.
Camp Ford (CSA)
Camp Ford was the largest Confederate Prisoner of War Camp west of the Mississippi River during the American Civil War. Established in August of 1863, the camp was not closed until May 19, 1865. At its peak in July 1864, over 5,300 prisoners were detained there.
Castle Pinckney (CSA)

Danville Prison (CSA)
Designed for 3700, at its most crowded, they put 4000 men in here. Used from '63-'65; just under 1300 men died here.
Elmira Prison Camp (USA)
This camp was considered by many to be the "Andersonville of the North" because although its capacity was designed for 5000, just under 3,000 people died here.
Florence Military Stockade (CSA)
The Florence Prison Stockade was in operation for approximately 5 months during the time period of Sept 1864 through Feb 1865. During this time, as many as 15 - 18,000 Union soldiers were held captive.
Fort Delaware (USA)

Fort McHenry (USA)

Johnson's Island (USA)
Johnson's Island served as a Prisoner of War depot for Confederate Officers from April, 1862 through September, 1865. During that time, over 10,000 Southern officers found themselves confined on the island.
Libby Prison (CSA)
More than 50,000 men passed thru this prison while it was used by the Confederacy.
Ohio State Penitentiary (USA)
The Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus was a three-story stone structure with heavy iron bars on the windows and doors of cell blocks. It was used to house hardened convicts until July 30, 1863.
Old Capitol Prison (USA)
The Old Capitol Prison was located on the present site of the U.S. Supreme Court building, First Street and âAâ Street NE in Washington DC.
Parole System
Lacking a means for dealing with large numbers of captured troops early in the war, the U.S. and Confederate governments relied on the traditional European system of parole and exchange of prisoners.
Point Lookout (USA)
Constructed on the tip of the peninsula where the Potomac River joins Chesapeake Bay. In the two years during which the camp was in operation, August, 1863, to June, 1865, Point Lookout overflowed with inmates, surpassing its intended capacity of 10,000 to a population numbering between 12,500 and 20,000. In all, over 50,000 men, both military and civilian, were held prisoner there.
Prison Activities
Learn about some of the activities which prisoners used to take their minds off of their severe conditions.
Richmond's Castle Thunder (CSA)
Mainly used for civilian prisoners, it was generally packed with murderers and thieves. Males suspected of being disloyal, spies, and Union sympathizers were also incarcerated here.
Rock Island Prison (USA)
One of the westernmost federal prisons for confederate POWs was located on Rock Island, a government owned island in the Mississippi River between Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island and Moline, Illinois.

Where or how can you find FREE places to camp in the UK?

jimjam

cant find any web sites for free camping tips or advice in the Uk can u help??
SOME of the best things in the uk are Free so who eva said nothing is free is a boring lier!!
and im looking for free campsites not free camping equipment!
thanks

Answer
Don't just go and camp on a farmers field somewhere. Apart from being incredibly rude, you could find that your tent gets trampled in the morning as the cows are driven in for milking, or as the sheep are moved. Not to mention that said animals would probably start chewing the tent. You also run the risk of finding the farmer striding up to your tent at 5 am, shotgun in hand, telling you to "gerroff my land". As to the person above me, the law has now changed, what with right to roam coming in.

I believe that you're not allowed to camp in National Parks anymore, but you could check.

A decent campsite shouldn't be any more than £15 a night, and that includes things like loo, showers, tv and games room. Well worth it IMHO

Good place to camp, in the UK?

Ben

My friend is 18 next week and we want to go camping, 10 of us. We are all responsible, but we will be drinking. What im asking for is suggestions as to where to camp, legally, free (or as near as makes no difference, like 30 pound max for all of us) and safely. we were thinking by the beach but worries are A) legality and B) tide washing us away.

Where do you suggest? i.e a field, the beach.. ect.... and the Ads and Dis ads..
Thanks a bunch :)
Im from Dorset, able to drive within 1 county away. I basically want to know how comfortable campsites would be with a load of 18 years olds turning up..? Or a beach? are we likely to get into trouble camping on a beach? I would like to think we were responsible

Answer
The next place I am going to try is Glencoe in Scotland - not sure if that is any good for you? You would have to drive of course and depending where you are travelling from that might take a day or so.

You might want to add a few more details to your question to suggest where you are travelling from, whether you can drive there or need public transport, and that type of thing.

Now to get a campsite for £30 you might have to look at a farm campsite rather than a professional set up and you will only get basic facilities there. There are very few free campsites since the land owners all have to make the land pay

The guy who uploaded the photo calls himself Colorado Camper. Just taking a guess I would say the photo was taken in Colorado, could be just about any place.

Whats the BEST place in Colorado to go tent camping?

Marcos

I want the best place, near a river or lake, beautiful views, hiking, etc.

Answer
We traveled through Colorado the first year we were married in 1971. I always planned to go back and just camp along the Highway next to the streams and rivers. I never did. You probably can't just camp anywhere and now if I did, I would most likely get robbed and mugged. But I still have the dream and can picture the beautiful scenery along the highway. Look into the State and National parks.
