Don't just go and camp on a farmers field somewhere. Apart from being incredibly rude, you could find that your tent gets trampled in the morning as the cows are driven in for milking, or as the sheep are moved. Not to mention that said animals would probably start chewing the tent. You also run the risk of finding the farmer striding up to your tent at 5 am, shotgun in hand, telling you to "gerroff my land". As to the person above me, the law has now changed, what with right to roam coming in.
I believe that you're not allowed to camp in National Parks anymore, but you could check.
A decent campsite shouldn't be any more than £15 a night, and that includes things like loo, showers, tv and games room. Well worth it IMHO

Good place to camp, in the UK?
Ben
My friend is 18 next week and we want to go camping, 10 of us. We are all responsible, but we will be drinking. What im asking for is suggestions as to where to camp, legally, free (or as near as makes no difference, like 30 pound max for all of us) and safely. we were thinking by the beach but worries are A) legality and B) tide washing us away.
Where do you suggest? i.e a field, the beach.. ect.... and the Ads and Dis ads..
Thanks a bunch :)
Im from Dorset, able to drive within 1 county away. I basically want to know how comfortable campsites would be with a load of 18 years olds turning up..? Or a beach? are we likely to get into trouble camping on a beach? I would like to think we were responsible

The next place I am going to try is Glencoe in Scotland - not sure if that is any good for you? You would have to drive of course and depending where you are travelling from that might take a day or so.
You might want to add a few more details to your question to suggest where you are travelling from, whether you can drive there or need public transport, and that type of thing.
Now to get a campsite for £30 you might have to look at a farm campsite rather than a professional set up and you will only get basic facilities there. There are very few free campsites since the land owners all have to make the land pay
